Prom Night

Chapter Twelve: Prom Night The sun dipped low on the horizon as Eleanor stood in front of her mirror. Her dress shimmered with every movement, a deep midnight blue that hugged her form perfectly. Her hair curled in soft waves down her back, and the locket Ryan gave her rested over her heart. She looked older than seventeen. Stronger. Steeled by everything she’d endured. Downstairs, her father waited at the foot of the stairs. “You look beautiful,” he said quietly. “Thanks, Dad.” There was a pause, thick with unsaid things. He sighed. “I don’t trust him, Ellie. But I trust you. Just… be careful.” “I will.” Outside, Ryan waited with a borrowed car and a nervous expression. When Eleanor stepped out, his mouth parted slightly. “Wow,” he breathed. “You’re… breathtaking.” She smiled. “So are you. Well—almost.” He offered his hand. “Let’s go show them what real love looks like.” --- The school gym had been transformed with fairy lights and a canopy of stars. Music pulsed through the space, but all Eleanor heard was the beating of her heart as Ryan led her in. Whispers followed them. Some admiring, some judgmental. But none of it mattered. Not tonight. They danced like the world wasn’t watching. For a few hours, it was just them. But Miranda wasn’t done. Midway through the night, she appeared. Dressed in red, lips curled in a mocking smile. She walked straight toward them. “You really thought this was your fairy tale?” she hissed. Ryan stepped in front of Eleanor. “Don’t.” “I loved you,” Miranda spat. “You said it meant something.” “It did. Until you turned it into poison.” Tears shimmered in her eyes, but she turned and fled before they could fall. Silence returned. Then the DJ switched songs. Slow. Sweet. Ryan turned to Eleanor. “May I?” She nodded, and they danced—wrapped in each other. Their first true moment of peace in weeks. As the song ended, Ryan leaned in. “I love you, Ellie.” Her heart stilled. Then soared. “I love you too.” And as they kissed under the soft glow of lights, the past melted away. All that remained was the fire between them.
