Chapter 18: The Proposal Under the Northern Lights (Expanded)

1034 Words
The chill of Christmas Eve carried a sense of anticipation as the small town of Evergreen Falls sparkled under the glow of holiday lights. The streets were quieter than usual, as most families gathered indoors around crackling fires. Yet, for Ethan, the night held a purpose so profound that his heart raced with each passing moment. He checked his pocket again to ensure the small velvet box was still there, feeling the weight of the ring inside. It wasn’t just a piece of jewelry—it was a promise, a declaration, and a future he desperately wanted to build with Lila and Sophie. “Ready for a walk?” Ethan asked as he entered the living room, where Lila and Sophie were putting the finishing touches on a plate of Christmas cookies. “A walk?” Lila questioned, raising an eyebrow. “Just a short one,” Ethan said with a casual shrug, though his heart pounded. “The snow is perfect, and it’s not too cold. Plus, I think Sophie has a little extra energy to burn before bed.” Sophie looked up eagerly. “Can we? Please, Mommy?” Lila smiled. “Alright. But only because it’s Christmas Eve and you asked so sweetly.” --- The Journey to the Clearing The three of them bundled up and stepped out into the winter wonderland. Snowflakes drifted lazily from the sky, landing on their hats and coats as they walked down the quiet street. Ethan led the way, holding Sophie’s hand, while Lila followed, watching the two most important people in her life with a heart full of warmth. “Where are we going?” Lila asked again as they turned onto a small wooded path. “It’s a surprise,” Ethan said, flashing her a grin. “Daddy’s surprises are always the best,” Sophie added with a giggle. As they walked, the sound of crunching snow beneath their boots filled the air, accompanied by Sophie’s chatter about Christmas wishes and her excitement for Santa’s arrival. Lila couldn’t help but laugh at her daughter’s enthusiasm, her breath forming small clouds in the cold. --- The Enchanted Clearing When they reached the clearing, Lila stopped in her tracks, her eyes widening in wonder. The trees around them were adorned with strings of fairy lights, their warm glow creating a magical cocoon of light. A small firepit crackled in the center, surrounded by soft blankets and pillows. “Ethan,” Lila breathed, turning to him. “What is this?” “Just a little something I put together,” he said, taking her hand and leading her closer. Sophie squealed with delight, running ahead to inspect the setup. “It’s so pretty!” Ethan guided Lila to one of the blankets, helping her sit down. “I wanted tonight to be special,” he said, his voice soft. “It already is,” Lila replied, her eyes shimmering with emotion. --- The Moment of Truth After they had settled by the fire, Ethan turned to Sophie and whispered something in her ear. The little girl’s eyes lit up, and she nodded eagerly before dashing off toward a nearby tree. Lila watched her go, her curiosity growing. “What’s she up to?” “You’ll see,” Ethan said, his smile tinged with nervousness. He took a deep breath and reached into his coat pocket, pulling out the velvet box. Lila’s eyes widened as he knelt before her, his expression earnest and full of love. “Lila,” he began, his voice steady despite the emotion in his chest. “When you came back into my life, everything changed. You reminded me what it feels like to truly live, to laugh, and to love with my whole heart.” Her breath caught as tears filled her eyes. “You’ve brought so much light into my world, not just for me but for Sophie, too. I can’t imagine a future without you by my side. You’re my home, Lila, and I want to spend the rest of my life proving how much you mean to me.” He opened the box, revealing a delicate silver ring, the diamond at its center catching the glow of the firelight. “Will you marry me?” --- Lila’s Answer Before Lila could respond, Sophie ran back, holding a small bouquet of winter flowers she had picked earlier. “Say yes, Mommy!” she exclaimed, her face glowing with excitement. Lila laughed through her tears, nodding as she looked at Ethan. “Yes. Yes, I’ll marry you.” Ethan’s smile was brighter than the fairy lights around them as he slipped the ring onto her finger. He pulled her into a warm embrace, and Sophie jumped into their arms, the three of them laughing and crying together. --- The Northern Lights Appear As they held each other, the sky above them came alive with color. Shades of green, purple, and blue danced across the heavens, the Northern Lights putting on a spectacular show. “It’s perfect,” Lila whispered, gazing up at the lights. “Just like you,” Ethan replied, pulling her closer. Sophie clapped her hands in delight. “It’s like the sky is celebrating with us!” The family stood there for what felt like an eternity, basking in the glow of the lights and the warmth of their love. --- A New Beginning Later, as they walked back home hand in hand, Ethan couldn’t help but feel that the night had been a turning point. He had found his forever in Lila and Sophie, and together, they were building a life filled with love, laughter, and endless possibilities. As they approached the house, Sophie tugged on Ethan’s sleeve. “Daddy, does this mean we’re a real family now?” Ethan knelt down, looking into her bright, hopeful eyes. “We’ve always been a family, Sophie. But now it’s official.” “Yay!” Sophie cheered, throwing her arms around him. Lila smiled, watching the two of them with a heart full of gratitude. As they stepped inside, the warmth of the house enveloped them, and they knew that this Christmas would be one they’d cherish forever.
