Chapter 3: Tinsel and Tensions

712 Words
By the following week, the Christmas Festival planning was in full swing. The decorating team, led by Maggie and Ethan, had taken over the town hall basement, which was now packed with boxes of lights, wreaths, ribbons, and ornaments. Lila had tried to keep her distance, but every meeting seemed to place her squarely in Ethan’s orbit. “Okay, team,” Maggie said, clapping her hands as they gathered around a table laden with supplies. “We’ve got four days to get the square looking like a Christmas wonderland. Think twinkling lights, sparkling snowflakes, and enough garlands to make Santa jealous.” As the group began dividing tasks, Lila was scribbling notes when Maggie nudged her with a mischievous grin. “Guess who you’re paired with for the lights?” Lila froze, her pen poised midair. “Maggie, don’t—” “Ethan!” Maggie announced cheerfully, ignoring Lila’s glare. “You two can handle the gazebo and the tree. Perfect teamwork, right?” Ethan, who had been unpacking a box of ornaments, glanced over and raised an eyebrow. “Works for me,” he said, his tone casual. Lila sighed, silently cursing her friend. “Fine.” --- Later that afternoon, Lila found herself standing in the town square, bundled in her coat and scarf as Ethan untangled a strand of lights nearby. The gazebo, which served as the centerpiece of the festival, was half-covered in snow, its railings draped with frost. “You don’t have to help with this, you know,” Lila said, trying to sound indifferent. Ethan shrugged, his breath forming clouds in the cold air. “I volunteered, remember? Besides, it’s not like I’m letting you decorate this thing alone.” She rolled her eyes but couldn’t hide the small smile tugging at her lips. They worked in relative silence, though the occasional spark of conversation broke through. “So,” Ethan said as he looped a strand of lights around the gazebo railing. “How’s Sophie liking Evergreen Falls?” “She loves it,” Lila admitted. “Everything about this place feels magical to her.” “Can’t blame her,” Ethan said, smiling. “This town does have a way of growing on you.” Lila nodded but didn’t respond. The truth was, part of her felt the same way. As they worked, Sophie appeared, bounding through the snow with a red scarf trailing behind her. “Mommy! Look what Grandma got me!” she called, holding up a shiny red sled. “That’s great, sweetie,” Lila said, laughing as Sophie twirled in the snow. Ethan crouched to her level. “You know, there’s a perfect hill for sledding just past the old mill. Have you tried it yet?” Sophie shook her head, her eyes lighting up. “No! Can we go?” Lila hesitated. “We’re kind of busy right now.” “I’ll take her,” Ethan offered without missing a beat. “It’s just a quick ride, and I know the perfect spot.” Lila blinked, caught off guard. “You don’t have to do that.” “I want to,” Ethan said, his tone sincere. Sophie grabbed Lila’s hand, her face pleading. “Please, Mommy? Please?” Lila glanced between them, her resolve softening. “Okay, fine. But just for a little while.” --- Watching Ethan pull Sophie’s sled through the snow, Lila felt an unexpected pang in her chest. The sight of them laughing together stirred something deep inside her, something she wasn’t ready to name. Later that evening, as Sophie chattered excitedly about her sledding adventure, Diane gave Lila a pointed look. “Looks like someone had fun today,” Diane said with a smile. “Sophie did,” Lila replied quickly. “And maybe you, too,” Diane added, her voice teasing. Lila groaned. “Mom, please. Don’t read into things.” Diane shrugged, but her knowing smile lingered. - - - Key Developments in Chapter 3 Lila and Ethan begin working more closely, with moments of vulnerability peeking through.
