Chapter 11: Trust and Tensions

458 Words
The memory of Claire’s pointed words lingered with Lila for the rest of the day. She couldn’t shake the feeling that Claire’s presence in Evergreen Falls was more than just a coincidence. As much as she wanted to brush it off, a nagging voice in the back of her mind reminded her that she’d been the one who left. By the time she reached Ethan’s workshop that evening, her emotions were swirling. Ethan was in his element, sanding down a wooden bench with a focused expression. The smell of sawdust and varnish filled the air, and for a moment, Lila just watched him, her heart tugging at the sight. He looked up, his face softening when he saw her. “Hey,” he said, setting down the sander. “What brings you here?” Lila hesitated, her fingers twisting the edge of her scarf. “I ran into Claire today,” she began, her voice steady despite the storm inside her. Ethan raised an eyebrow. “Did you?” “She mentioned she’d had coffee with you,” Lila continued, stepping closer. “And she made it pretty clear that she’s... invested in your life.” Ethan leaned against the workbench, crossing his arms. “Claire and I have history, but not in the way you’re thinking.” “Maybe not,” Lila admitted, her voice quieter now. “But it’s hard not to feel... unsettled. I left, Ethan. And while I was gone, she was here.” Ethan studied her for a moment, then stepped forward, gently taking her hands in his. “Lila, Claire was a friend when I needed one. Nothing more. Whatever she’s trying to imply, it doesn’t change how I feel about you.” Lila looked down at their joined hands, her heart aching with a mix of relief and lingering doubt. “It’s not just about Claire. It’s about me... about whether I deserve this second chance with you.” Ethan tilted her chin up, his eyes locking with hers. “You do,” he said firmly. “And I’m not letting anyone or anything get between us—not the past, not Claire, not even your doubts.” Tears pricked Lila’s eyes, but she blinked them away, nodding. “I want to believe that. I really do.” “Then believe it,” Ethan said, pulling her into a warm embrace. “We’ve got something worth fighting for, Lila. And I’m not giving up on us.” That night, as Lila lay awake in bed, she replayed Ethan’s words in her mind. For the first time in years, she allowed herself to truly hope—not just for a future with Ethan, but for a love strong enough to weather anything.
