The morning after the gala, Evergreen Falls was quiet, blanketed in fresh snow. Lila woke to the soft light of dawn streaming through her window, her heart lighter than it had been in years. The success of the gala—and the warmth she’d shared with Ethan—had given her a sense of belonging she hadn’t felt in a long time.
As she made her way downstairs, Sophie was already awake, sitting at the kitchen table with her sketchbook.
“Morning, sweetheart,” Lila said, brushing a kiss on Sophie’s head.
“Morning, Mommy! Look!” Sophie held up a drawing of a snowman surrounded by a family—a little girl, a man, and a woman with long hair.
Lila’s breath caught. “That’s beautiful, Sophie. Is that us?”
Sophie nodded enthusiastically. “And Ethan! He’s part of our family now, right?”
Lila paused, her heart swelling at Sophie’s innocent assumption. “We’ll see, sweetie,” she said softly, ruffling her daughter’s hair.

Later that day, Ethan showed up at Lila’s house, a mischievous grin on his face.
“Morning,” he said, holding up a thermos of coffee and a bag of pastries. “Thought you might need a little pick-me-up after last night.”
“You’re a lifesaver,” Lila said, letting him inside.
As they sat at the kitchen table, Ethan pulled out a folded piece of paper. “So, I’ve been thinking,” he began, unfolding the paper to reveal plans for a small woodworking studio. “I’ve had this dream for a while now—expanding my business into something bigger. Maybe even teaching workshops for the community.”
Lila leaned closer, her eyes scanning the detailed sketches. “Ethan, this is amazing. Why haven’t you done it yet?”
He shrugged, a sheepish smile on his face. “I guess I was waiting for the right time. But now... it feels like it’s time to take the leap.”
Lila looked up at him, pride shining in her eyes. “You should absolutely go for it. This town loves you—and your work. It’s a perfect idea.”
“Would you help me?” Ethan asked, his voice soft but hopeful.
“Of course,” Lila said without hesitation. “Whatever you need.”
Ethan reached across the table, taking her hand in his. “Thank you, Lila. For everything.”
A Small Step Forward
Over the next few weeks, Lila and Ethan worked together to bring his vision to life. They scouted locations, met with suppliers, and even recruited volunteers to help renovate an old storefront near the town square.
The process wasn’t without its challenges—balancing the project with their own lives and Lila’s responsibilities as a mother was no small feat—but it brought them closer in ways they hadn’t expected.
One evening, as they stood in the partially renovated studio, Lila looked around at the progress they’d made. “This is really happening,” she said, her voice tinged with awe.
Ethan wrapped an arm around her shoulders, pulling her close. “It is. And I couldn’t have done it without you.”
Lila leaned into him, feeling a sense of purpose and partnership she hadn’t felt in years.
The Ribbon Cutting
When the studio was finally ready, the whole town turned out for the grand opening. Ethan stood at the entrance, holding a pair of oversized scissors, with Lila and Sophie by his side.
“Thank you all for being here,” Ethan said, addressing the crowd. “This project has been a dream of mine for a long time, and I couldn’t have done it without your support—or without these two incredible ladies.”
The crowd cheered as Ethan cut the ribbon, officially opening the studio. Lila felt a swell of pride—not just for Ethan, but for the life they were building together.
As the crowd began to disperse, Ethan turned to Lila, his expression serious.
“There’s something I’ve been meaning to ask you,” he said, reaching into his pocket.
Lila’s breath caught as he pulled out a small box and knelt down on one knee.
“Lila Montgomery,” he said, his voice steady and full of emotion, “you’re the love of my life. You’ve given me a second chance at happiness, and I don’t want to spend another day without you. Will you marry me?”
Tears filled Lila’s eyes as she nodded, her voice trembling with joy. “Yes, Ethan. A thousand times, yes.”
The crowd erupted into applause as Ethan slipped the ring onto her finger, sealing their promise with a kiss.
