Aurelia stood at the edge of the rooftop garden, the cold night air brushing her skin. Below, the city sparkled like a constellation of electric stars, but her mind wasn’t on the view—it was on the heat building in her chest.
The flame was still there. Slumbering. Growing.
She gripped the railing tighter.
Lucian had told her she was Seraphina reborn, the heir to an ancient power—and that she wasn’t human. And yet, here she was, heart pounding, breathing fast, her body caught between everything she’d always believed and everything that had been thrust upon her.
Behind her, she heard the door open.
Lucian’s presence followed a second later. She didn’t need to turn to know it was him. He carried his own kind of storm, always just below the surface—quiet, controlled, but powerful. Tonight, it was closer to the edge.
“I thought you’d be asleep,” he said.
“I couldn’t,” she replied, voice low. “Too much fire in my blood, apparently.”
He stepped beside her, the wind catching in his dark coat. “It’ll get worse before it gets better. The flame… it doesn’t just give power. It awakens memory. Emotion. Everything you once were.”
She turned her face to him. “You mean everything she was.”
He looked at her then, a flicker of something raw in his eyes. “You’re not two people. You are one soul. Changed, reborn—but always you.”
Aurelia wasn’t sure if that comforted or terrified her.
“What was she like?” she asked after a beat. “Seraphina.”
Lucian didn’t answer immediately. His eyes drifted to the sky, as if searching for a memory he’d buried deep.
“She was fierce,” he said finally. “Terrifying, sometimes. But kind. She ruled with passion—sometimes too much. She burned bright. And when she loved… it was absolute.”
Her breath hitched, heart thudding faster. “And you… loved her?”
The question hung in the air like smoke.
Lucian’s jaw tensed. “I was hers. In every way.”
A silence fell between them.
“I think I’ve always felt it,” she whispered. “That something inside me didn’t fit this world. That I was… waiting for something. For someone.”
Lucian turned toward her, his voice softer now. “You weren’t waiting. You were surviving. The power inside you needed time to awaken. And now it has.”
“But what if I’m not ready for it?”
“You don’t have to be ready. You just have to be willing.”

Later that night, as Aurelia wandered the halls of Lucian’s penthouse, her fingers trailing along the cool marble walls, she felt something shift. The air suddenly grew cold. Still.
Then, the shadows moved.
Her breath caught. She froze.
Out of the darkness, a figure emerged—tall, cloaked, faceless. Not quite human.
Her instincts screamed. Her heart exploded in her chest.
Before she could call out, the thing lunged—but the moment it did, Aurelia threw out her hand.
Fire.
It erupted from her palm, a blinding wave of light and heat. The creature shrieked, the sound unnatural, echoing through the halls, before disintegrating into ash.
She collapsed to her knees, heart pounding, smoke curling around her.
Lucian was there within seconds.
He took one look at the scorch marks, the smoldering hallway, and her wide, trembling eyes.
“They’ve found you,” he said grimly. “The Shadow Court knows you’ve awakened.”
“Who the hell are they?” she gasped.
Lucian’s face hardened. “The ones who killed Seraphina. And the ones who’ll try to kill you now.”
---
That night, Lucian gathered his inner circle—three people who appeared as nothing more than elite corporate executives, but who radiated the same ancient energy Aurelia had come to recognize.
There was Kara, a sharp-eyed woman who controlled the flow of magical intel like a master hacker; Dorian, a charming strategist with too many secrets behind his smile; and Elias, a quiet warlock with scars that whispered of past battles.
They sat around the long obsidian conference table as Lucian laid out the truth.
“The Shadow Court is moving,” he said. “They’ve waited centuries for the heir to reappear. If they destroy her before she completes the Rite of Flame, the balance between realms collapses. They’ll take power. The human world will fall.”
“And what if she completes it?” Kara asked, glancing at Aurelia.
Lucian didn’t look at Aurelia when he answered.
“She’ll become what she was always meant to be—the Flame Queen. And no force will be able to stop her.”
Aurelia swallowed. “You say that like it’s a bad thing.”
“It’s not bad,” Lucian said quietly. “It’s just… uncertain. Even the queen didn’t fully understand the flame’s power. It changes things. Changes people.”
“I won’t become something I hate,” Aurelia said.
Lucian finally looked at her. “I’ll make sure you don’t.”

But that night, as she stood in front of the mirror, staring at the faint golden glow beneath her skin, Aurelia wasn’t so sure.
Something inside her was changing.
And whether she liked it or not…
The queen was waking.
