1: Dylan

Have I ever liked school? Not really. It’s just a bunch of kids like me constantly finding ways to make our collective f****d up lives even harder. Then again, that’s NOT the only reason I hate school at the moment. Another reason was walking in on my boyfriend of six months shoving his tongue down the throat of the school w***e. In the boys bathroom if you can believe that s**t. The proper reaction would have been to walk away. Cry a little maybe. Probably throw in a little bit of healthy journaling afterwards. But I had popped some Molly in the cafeteria earlier so I had a different reaction. What was it? I punched him in the face. And then I punched HER in the face. Of course a fight broke out. And now, here I was, in the principal’s office, seated next to my Tyler who was supposed to be faithful to me and his side piece . So, there you have it. A valid reason to hate school. The principal was staring daggers at me. To be fair, I’ve gotten into a lot of trouble from day one. It was expected that he wasn’t going to be my biggest fan. “Dylan Hue,” He began, “Are you aware that you’re already on your second strike? You think punching people makes your situation any better?” I scoffed and looked away hoping he’d move on to Tyler and Penny. “I’m talking to you, Dylan!” Well then, I guess he’s not moving on that easy. “So what about what they did to get me mad?” I demanded, “That s**t doesn’t matter?” “For Christ’s sake, don’t swear in my office!” “They were making out in the boy’s bathroom!” I yelled and pointed at Penny, “That place is disgusting you no class having b***h! You let him kiss you there?” Penny got up then and began yelling at me. “Burn in hell, Dylan!!” “Miss Reynold, that’s enough! Sit down this instant!” The principal snapped at her. Maybe it was the stress of being cheated on, getting in trouble because of a stupid boy or the Molly that I popped earlier. Whatever it was, every single thing suddenly got overwhelming and I desperately needed to get the hell out of that office. Hell, the whole building. Anywhere but here. “You know what, Tyler,” I turned to my cheating boyfriend, “I’m done. We’re done!!” “Dylan, babe, hold on” The moron tried to beg. “Nope. f**k you and f**k you, Penny! I hope you get pregnant and not know who the father is” “f**k off, Dylan” I grabbed my bag and began heading out of the office. “Hey, Hey, Hey, you get back here, Dylan! I am not in the mood for you today! Get back here or else!” I was already apathetic toward everything so a threat wasn’t a problem for me. “Call my dad if you need to complain about something” I threw open the office door and stormed off. As soon as I was out of that office I was sprinting for the exit. I was all bravado back then but the truth was, I was on the brink of tears and I was struggling to breathe. It was all too much. I ran all the way to the parking lot, found my car and drove out before security even had the chance to stop me from leaving school grounds. Where I was driving to? I had no idea. All I know is I stopped by an empty parking space at a mall and just bawled my eyes out. I just kept crying and crying until my chest hurt. It wasn’t fair. How could Tyler cheat on me like this? How could he make me believe he was my person and then turn around and humiliate me? On some level, the cheating didn’t hurt me as much as who he cheated on me with. Penny Reynold was someone you touched and then lie to your friends about hooking up with so they wouldn’t look at you funny. The fact that a guy who i really cared for would disrespect me so blatantly, it made me want to…. “AHHHHHHHHH!!!!! f**k YOU, TYLER!!! I HATE YOU!!! I HATE YOU!! YOU STUPID SON OF A b***h!! HOW COULD YOU!” I stayed in that parking space till the sun went down and my father had given up on blowing up my phone. He’d given more missed calls and sent more “where are you?” Texts that evening that he’d done in years. Since when was he so concerned about me? The principal probably already called to tell him what I’d done and he’s only reaching out to yell at me. Whatever. I’ll see him at home anyway. It was probably around 10pm when I walked through the front door of the house I lived with my dad. It had been just us since he and my mom got a divorce ten years ago. Safe to say that after he found out about me liking boys and the drugs and every other bullshit I bring with me, things steadily got tense between us. He didn’t like me being his son as much as I disliked him being my father. My father was sitting by the dinner table with his hands folded across his chest looking into nothing. I was hoping he’d let me go in without calling me out but that was nothing but heavy, wishful thinking. As soon as I reached for the stair railing, he let me know he was aware of me. “I’ve been calling you, boy” I let out a shaky breath as I braced for a fight. “I couldn’t answer.” “Why? Were you too high?” “Yes, dad. I was so high that I couldn’t even hold my phone up,” I added even with even more sarcasm, “Gee, it’s a miracle I drove home without crashing the car” “YOUR PRINCIPAL CALLED ME AGAIN GODDAMNIT!!” He slammed his hand on the table. I flinched a bit but immediately regained my composure. “Dad….” “Your little homosexual sinner friend dumps you for a girl, thank God for that!!! And you, my kid, who is supposed to like women…..” “Supposed to?” “Do you know what will happen if you get expelled from this school?! How many more chances do you think you can get?” “Can I please go inside and get some sleep?” “Why you little piece of s**t….” I must have really pissed him off because he pushed himself up and was about to launch at me. I stepped back and raised my arms to shield against a blow that never came. His phone rang at that very moment. Just my luck. I didn’t get to see the caller ID but my dad looked pretty surprised by it judging from the slightly widened look in his eyes. He answered. “Hello?” I had no idea what the other person was saying but I noticed that the longer my dad stayed on this call the paler he became. Eventually, his legs gave way from under him and he collapsed to the ground. I dashed over to his side trying to hold him up. “Dad?! Dad! Hey what’s wrong?” He used a shaky hand to grab my shirt and I could see now that his eyes were misty and he was on the verge of tears. That scared me. My dad? Crying? Something was really wrong. “Dad! What the hell?! What happened?” “Ava…. Oh, Dylan,” Dad broke down then, “My little princess. My little girl.” He wept into my shirt as his whole body shook from violent sobs. I, on the other hand, still hadn’t come to fully understand what was happening. “Dad? Okay, I need you to calm down and talk to me. What’s happening? What about Ava?” “Dylan. Your sister…….She killed herself”
