(Jade's POV)
A few days have passed now, and I feel completely fine. Thanks to my wolf, Lola, I am able to heal much faster than a normal wolf.
However, Hunter is getting on my last nerve, coddling me every chance he gets. I can't take it anymore. I need to get out of this house!
I'm itching to give Lola a break and run in the woods, but since what happened the last time, Hunter has not allowed it. I can only go when he's with me, but he's had his hands full while I've been healing. Knowing this, I have decided to keep my frustration to myself, but this is it. Today is the last day I'm trapped in this house.
I'm sitting in the tv room, and I get up, deciding to storm into Hunter's office. I'm about to ascend the stairs, when I feel someone push past me. Knocking my right arm hard enough for me to stumble a bit.
"Oh my, I'm so sorry I did not see you!" I hear a sickly sweet voice, and I look up, seeing the same lady who gave me the look of death a few days ago. I still don't know who she is, but I don't wait long for a name.
"Are you alright? I did not see you at all! I must apologize! Hi, sorry, my name is Jennifer," She says again, her voice starting to annoy me. She continues to speak,
"Are you looking for Hunter? I left him in the office. He seemed rather stressed, so I thought I'd pay him a visit. He's all good now though." The way she said it made my skin crawl, and it sounded like there was a connotation behind her words.
Jealousy is rearing it's ugly head, but I do my utmost to keep it hidden.
I give her the sweetest smile I can. "Thank you, I was just heading that way before you stopped me. I forgot to introduce myself. I'm Jade Rose, Hunter's mate. It's nice to meet you." I hold out my hand for her to shake.
I see her smile falter slightly when I said the word "mate" but she quickly recovered. Taking my hand and shaking it.
"Well, let me not keep you waiting. I'm sure we'll see each other often. Bye for now." She smiles and waves at me. I'm pretty sure i saw a sneer on her face before she even fully turned around. I'm not sure yet what her beef is with me, but right now I couldn't give a d**m.
I make my way to Hunter's office, but before I enter, the door opens. My breath catches, as usual, at the sight of Hunter standing in the doorway. His rugged sexiness catches me off guard, and I almost embarrassingly swoon. Noticing my misstep, Hunter grabs my arm and steadies me. Smirking knowingly at me.
"Good afternoon, sweetheart. How are you feeling today?" Hunter says and I blush.
"Was that really necessary?!" I said, flushing again.
"Only the best for you, love." He smirks.
I laugh this time at how at ease he is with me. He's been calling me by these petnames all week, and he knows the effect it has on me. I'm still too shy to be that intimate with him, but he doesn't seem to mind. It seems as though his running through as many as he can, until he finds the right one.
"Well, before you sidetrack me again, I was actually coming up to check we could go and see the rogue now?" I ask.
"I was hoping you would forget about that."
"I haven't, so can we go? Or do you need to be somewhere else first?"
"No, I was heading down to check up on you, so I'm free."
"By the way... who's Jennifer?" I asked him softly, looking up at him to see his reaction.
"Oh, Jen? She's an old friend." He says nonchalantly, but I get the feeling he's trying to keep it too casual.
"Oh, I see. When I spoke to her just now, it seemed like she meant something else other than... friends."
Hunter coughs, and it gives him away. "That's what I thought." I start walking away angrily.
"Jade, it was before I met you. It never meant anything and she knew that."
"Hunter, i don't really want to talk about it now. I just wanted my suspicions confirmed. I can't help my... reaction, but it's not the most important thing right now." I said.
"By the way, can you make sure that it's just me and you in there with that rogue?" I asked Hunter.
"Sure, let's go." Hunter grabs my hand and we head to the underground cells.
Hunter mind-links the guards, so by the time we get there, they leave as soon as they see us. Hunter advises them that he will let them know when to return. I'm about to head in, but Hunter stops me, stepping in first. I followed right behind him, and through the first door, I immediately got the rogue stench. Like a few-week-old rogue stench,-it's revolting. Trying not to gag, I calmed my stomach. How am I supposed to intimidate a rogue if he sees me gagging? Ah, what a sight to behold! Get yourself in order now i***t! I scold myself.
The stench is getting stronger the further we go, and he comes to an immediate stop. Turning to me, and holding my arms steady, he said, "This is as far as you go."
Taking a deep breath, and giving a short nod. I waited for him to step aside and take a look at the cell holding the rogue.
He looks beaten and bruised, and as Hunter explained before we got here, he still hasn't spoken.
"Why are you after me?" I asked him.
"Wouldn't you like to know?" came the comment from the cell.
"Yes. I do. What do you want from me?"
"Isn't it obvious, we want you," he says.
"No, I wouldn't be asking if I thought it was obvious."
"How dense are you then, to not have figured it out yet?" He coughs out his answer. He looks sick from being beaten, and fed enough just to keep his strength up for another beating. I did not want to think about the methods Hunter and his men used. It made me queasy just thinking about it.
I can see that he's not going to give me any straight forward answers, so I decide to let some of my aura go.
"I asked, why are you after me?" I said with more authority.
The rogue falls to his knees, losing his breath, and coughing more. His next words sounded more like a wheeze.
"Ah, now I understand," he says, laughing a little. My power seemed more like a joke than an order to him.
I let out a little more, "Answer me!" He's fighting as hard as he can not to give in, but I can see that he's not going to answer. I let go of my full power, and I even hear Hunter struggling behind me. The rogue, now fully bent down, tries to lift his hand, struggling to breathe.
I don't let up, I want my authority to sink in. Just before he passes out, I let up, and wait for his response.
"F*ck, was that necessary?" he asks.
"Well?"
" It's the Rogue Alpha. He hasn't given too many details. All he said was for us to catch you and bring you in alive. That you are not to be harmed too much. I swear I know nothing else."
"I don't believe you," I said, letting out the full power of my aura again. I wait for him to beg me to stop, while half passing out again he begs me to stop.
Coughing, he answers again, "I don't even know his name. I only saw him one time, but he was hooded. I swear!"
"What else?" I asked him again.
"That is all! I'm not high up on the ranks of rogues, but they sent me out here and offered me a higher rank! They said that I must bring you back before your birthday. That's all!" he coughs again. This must have really taken a toll on his body, as he started to cough up blood.
My Birthday? Rogues have ranks? Huh? That shouldn't be possible. I thought to myself. I'll speak to Hunter afterwards.
"Look," he says, "I only know what I have told you now. What you're doing to me with your aura alone. I'm not d**b, I understand now why he wants you."
"I still don't understand? And what has my birthday got to do with it?" I asked the rogue, still highly confused.
"Look, you have power in your blood. About your birthday, they were very vague, and I didn't ask questions. I assume the Rogue Alpha wants your power, and perhaps more than that. You're a real beauty too." he smooches his lips at me before sneering at me again and coughing-laughing. "So what about my deal, Alpha? I gave you what you wanted, now let me go," the rogue spits out the words in a mocking way.
Oh no, that makes sense. I started feeling sick to my stomach, and can't stand to be here any longer.
"Hunter, I'm done, I'm leaving." I said to Hunter, already leaving the room.
Before I'm too far out, I hear Hunter say to the rogue, "Did you really think you'd ever leave here alive? Think again, today is your last day alive, rogue." he says with disgust and anger.
I reached the front door, finally getting some fresh air outside. Fortunately, I didn't eat anything before coming here. Or I would have left some chunks of lunch right here.
Hunter comes up behind me, turning me around and hugging me a little. The guards were already making their way over.
He whispers in my ear, "That was the most sexy thing I have ever seen, love." Sighing, he pulls away a bit and looks at me.
"That was amazing, Jade. I'm more proud of you than I can say. It took us days to get nothing out of him, and you, only a few minutes. You're amazing." I saw the pride shining in his eyes. It makes me blush. He made sure to whisper enough only for me to hear. Aware that the guards are getting closer.
"Thank you for letting me see him. I learned a lot from that visit."
"So did we, love."
"What did he mean about ranks though? Is that even possible with rogues?" I asked.
"From what I understand, they have a rogue pack. But the "Alpha" seems to be keeping himself hidden from most of the members of his so-called pack. I won't under-estimate this "Alpha" if this is the type of thing he is capable of. We have to stay more alert from now on. That rogue was found on our borders. He shouldn't have even been that close to begin with. I've doubled shifts since then, so we'll be alerted if any of them show up again."
I shiver slightly, still feeling unease settle in to my bones. Hunter squeezes me a bit tighter to him, helping me calm my nerves and unease.
"By the way, when's your birthday?" Hunter asked.
"It's the 23rd April. So, about two weeks away," I replied.
"If you don't mind me asking, how old are you?"
"Well, I'm twenty. So, I'll be twenty-one on my birthday."
I sighed, and pulled away. "Let's go for a run." I said excitedly.
Taking my hand, Hunter leads me to the woods ahead, "Let's go."
