Chapter 5

Caden’s Point of View She was meek. Frail. A f*****g human. What were the odds? Actually, I knew the odds if she had been a wolf. A million to one. But she was human, which only made the odds even greater. That and she was the object of my best friend’s desire. Mate. I was almost completely sure of it. The goddess had a sick sense of humor. Saw my entire life as a joke, no doubt. Why not f**k Caden Sable up even more. Jenny strutted back into my office, a grim look on her face. “I don’t know why you even bothered to send me down there to get her. We both know this is going to end in a s**t storm.” The girl grumbled and fell into one of the many chairs I had in front of my desk. Meek. Frail. Broken. And completely in the dark about this side of the world. How truly dark everything was around her. A doe caught in headlights. I wanted to see what she was thinking. Feeling. If she could feel that instant connection as well. That innate urge to be around me as much as I now felt it. Finding a mate was considerably rare, almost mythical. And I needed to know what it felt like for her. “She will come around,” I growled back and folded my hands together in front of me. Jenny scoffed. Rolled her eyes. “Why would you want her to? She is oblivious to everything around her, thanks to her parents-” “Not her parents!” I hissed. Her history wasn’t unknown to me. Jessebelle and Lector had told me themselves about how they had gotten a human for a daughter. I just never thought that I would encounter her myself. Much less that she would be my mate. Jenny stilled in her seat, eyes growing vacant in that way that let me know she was talking to someone over the mind link. When the intelligence in her eyes returned and dread filled them straight after, I knew something was up. “Speak.” “They left. Took one of your old cars. One of the warriors informed me now because he was wondering-” My mind blanked out after that. Went silent in much the same way as it had when I found my mother dead on her bed. She was running away with someone else. The beta of this pack. My best friend since birth. And it was more than I could handle. Something inside my chest snapped. Human or not, that was my mate. Mine. No one else’s. Her lack of knowledge be damned. My Beta be f*****g damned. He had no right. “I’m going after them. Like f*****g hell I’ll let this fly. Jordan has crossed one too many f*****g lines.” I seethed through clenched lips. Jenny opened her mouth to speak but refrained. Shut it again before c*****g one calf over the other. An air of smugness surrounded her but I brushed it off. I needed to get to my mate. As I exited the office, Jenny spoke one last time. “Told you this was going to be a s**t storm.” Layla’s Point of View We were zooming past endless trees. With the top down, the wind whipped my hair in every direction. Music screeching all around me. And when I looked over, a broad smile on Jordan’s face as he stared at me. Eyes glinted violently in the early morning light. “Keep your eyes on the road, dipshit. We might veer off course if you don’t,” I urged above the roaring wind and music. Throwing his head back, Jordan let loose a wolfish chuckle, making my insides curl in on themselves. He also squeezed his eyes shut and let go of the steering wheel. My heart skipped several beats before I lunged for the free wheel. Only to come to realize that his knees were moving it and his eyes were squinted just enough to see the road. “Bastard,” I grumbled and sagged backward, relief washing over me. “Come on. Did you really think I’d do something to endanger your life?” He asked and twisted the music down. I rolled my eyes, unable to keep myself from smiling. “I don’t know. Maybe you have a death wish. We don’t get to talk about you all that much, you know.” Jordan shrugged just as we passed the first house leading into the town next to Sable Crescent. “Not much to tell you. Boring life. Boring parents. No siblings, obviously, as my parents had achieved perfection the first time around,” Cocky bastard. “And certainly no death wish. Not when I have someone like you around me all the time.” Another compliment. Veiled flirting. We were skirting around the topic of what we were every damned day. But the light-hearted comments only seemed to make my mind wander more and more to him. I could get used to this if he ever decided to make an actual move. Or maybe he was pitying me. Thought I was broken and just fun to toy with as a joke. It would make more sense than him actually liking me. Especially considering- “We’re here,” Jordan announced softly beside me. His hand was now on my knee, squeezing lightly. “Where did you go just now?” He asked. Snapped out of my internal monologue, I blinked at him. Realized that the car was standing still with no engine running. Several people mulled about around us. Normal people with not a single glowing eyeball. Jordan stuck out like a sore thumb. And not just because of his eyes. Every guy in sight barely had a scratch on his looks. Forcing a smile onto my face, I curled my fingers in my lap. Refrained from making eye contact with him for as long as possible. He was having none of it. Jordan gently tucked an index finger beneath my chin and turned my head his way. His face was perfectly framed by his lush hair. Those striking blue eyes stood out even more thanks to his long lashes. Every girl’s dream. “Don’t hide. Not from me. Never from me. I see you and I understand. Don’t run away.”
