Earlier...
When I entered the room with Penny, the first thing I noticed was the tired lines etched smoothly on James's face. He stood up and came to me with a smile stretching his perfect face.
"Thank you, Mrs Penny, that would be all," He nodded towards her, the smile still on his face.
Penny hesitated and looked from me to James and then back to me before she bowed stiffly before leaving the room. I wanted to protest being alone with James but his hands clamped on my mouth, preventing me from talking. I looked up at him, confusion clouding my eyes. "What are you doing?" My eyes seemed to ask.
Slowly, he placed his index finger on his lips and then pointed towards the door, an indication for me to remain silent. I nodded my head in acceptance and he released me.
