Calm Before The Storm

Chapter 9 Astrid’s POV I snapped out of my trance before I even saw it coming. Rhett moved away from me, and just then, my brother’s voice floated in from the kitchen island. A sudden wave of guilt slammed into me, hard and suffocating. What had I just done? Why was the weight of it only hitting me now? I’d let my brother’s best friend touch me in ways he shouldn’t have–while my brother was just a few feet away, making us dinner. Was that even proper? I thought Rhett had quit smoking few minutes earlier, but he pulled another cigarette from somewhere in his shirt. Instead of lighting it, he tucked it behind his left ear like it belonged there. He didn’t even look like a man who’d just crossed a line. Who the hell was this guy? My jaw clenched. I’d admit–it had felt good. Too good.
