I spend the rest of the afternoon leafing though the pages of countless Art History books. I try to narrow down the search by only picking up books focused on artists who lived before the 19th century - so post-impressionism, cubism, surrealism, pop art and expressionism are all out. Even though I have a good starting point, in that I at least know the name of the artist - Pierre-Narcisse Regnault - I'm still struggling to find the exact painting that I have in mind. In a book called The Art of War: Depictions of Battle in Art Through the Ages I find the same painting that Ms. Garner showed us in history class this morning, which I now learn is called Le Prix de la Liberté - or, The Price of Freedom.
