The Divorce Papers
Sophia moved through the next day in a daze, her mind clouded with the images of Alex and the mysterious woman. Every smile, every lingering touch, every intimate glance they shared plays over in her mind like a cruel, taunting film she couldn't turn off. By evening, her emotions hardened into something sharp and unyielding.
If he was determined to make a fool of me, then he'd pay for it.
That night, she found herself standing in her father’s old study, the quiet space filled with memories of his lectures on duty, honor, and loyalty to the family. But all those words feel empty now, hollow shells of ideals she was forced to uphold for the sake of her family’s image. For what? She thought bitterly, gripping the edge of the desk as anger bubbled up within her. For a marriage to a man who can’t even respect me?
Without hesitation, she pulled open the top drawer and grabbed a fresh sheet of paper. Her fingers shook as she wrote out the words that had been burning in her mind all day: Divorce Agreement.
Her pen hovered over the page, and for a moment, she felt a pang of hesitation. Divorce is drastic, and it’s bound to create a scandal, to set her life ablaze in ways she can’t yet foresee. But then she remembered the woman in the photos, the way Alex had smiled at her, and any doubts vanished. With renewed determination, she filled out the paper and signed her name with a flourish.
She placed the document in a sleek folder, her heart pounding as she stared at it, knowing that this was her way out. If he wanted to treat me like an afterthought, then I'd give him exactly what he wanted - my absence.
When Alex finally returned home, well past midnight, Sophia was waiting for him in the study. She heard the front door open, his footsteps steady and unhurried as he made his way inside, completely unaware of what was waiting for him. Her grip tightened on the folder, her heart raced as he finally stepped into the study.
His expression registered surprise, but only for a brief second before it was replaced by his usual mask of indifference. “Sophia,” he said, his voice calm but laced with annoyance. “Why are you still awake?”
Without a word, she stood and extended the folder to him. His eyes flickered at the paper in her hand, his expression unreadable as he took it. He opened the folder, his gaze scanning the words before him, and for the first time, she saw a flicker of something in his eyes - surprise, maybe even anger.
“Divorce papers?” he said, his tone sharp, each syllable clipped with restrained fury.
“Yes,” she replied, her voice steady, though her hands were trembling. “I’m not going to stay married to a man who can’t even respect me enough to keep his affairs private.”
A silence stretched between them, thick with unspoken words and barely suppressed anger. Alex’s gaze darkened, his eyes narrowing as he studied her, his jaw set in a tight line.
“Is this really what you want, Sophia?” he asked, his tone low and dangerous.
She lifted her chin, refusing to back down. “What I want is irrelevant to you, Alex. This marriage is a sham, and I refuse to be part of it any longer.”
He closed the folder with a snap, his gaze piercing as he took a step closer to her. For a moment, she felt a flicker of fear, but she pushed it down, refusing to show any weakness.
“You’re angry over a few photos in the tabloids?” he asks, his voice laced with cold amusement. “Sophia, I thought you were smarter than that.”
Her hands clenched at her sides, fury bubbling up inside her. “Don’t insult me, Alex. I saw the way you looked at her, the way you touched her. Don’t try to pretend that it meant nothing.”
He smirked, a cruel glint in his eyes. “If you’re so certain of what you saw, then why are you standing here, demanding answers?”
Her breath caught in her throat, his words hitting her like a punch to the gut. She opened her mouth to respond, but the words died on her lips. He was right, in a way. She’s here, demanding answers, because deep down, she wanted him to deny it, to tell her that the photos were a mistake, that there was some explanation for it all.
But he offered no such reassurance. Instead, he watched her, his gaze cold and detached, as if he was dissecting her every reaction, every vulnerability.
Finally, she broke the silence, her voice trembling with barely controlled anger. “Fine. If you don’t explain yourself, then I have nothing left to say. Sign the papers, and let’s end this absurdity.”
But instead of responding, Alex stepped forward, closing the distance between them. She held her ground, refusing to back away, even as her heart pounded with a mixture of fear and anger.
“You don’t understand anything, Sophia,” he said, his voice low, his gaze intense. “You think you know me, but you have no idea.”
“Then enlighten me,” she challenged, her voice barely above a whisper.
He held her gaze, a muscle ticking in his jaw, as if he was wrestling with some inner turmoil. For a brief moment, she thought he might finally let his guard down, that he might give her a glimpse of the man behind the mask.
But then he straightened, his expression hardening once more. “You want a divorce? Fine. But don’t expect it to be that simple.”
His words hung heavy in the air, a threat disguised as a promise. A chill ran down her spine as she realized that he was not going to make this easy for her. He was not going to let her walk away without a fight.
She swallowed hard, forcing herself to meet his gaze. “I don’t care how complicated you make it, Alex. I’m done with this marriage, and I’m done with you.”
A flicker of something - anger, maybe even hurt - crossed his face, but it was gone before she could fully register it. He stepped back, his gaze never leaving hers, as he studied her with a look of cold calculation.
“Very well,” he said, his voice deadly calm. “But remember this, Sophia. You wanted this marriage just as much as I did. You played the role of the dutiful wife, pretending to care, but we both know the truth.”
Her breath caught in her throat, his words cut deep. “You have no idea what I wanted, Alex. You never cared enough to find out.”
He raised an eyebrow, his gaze piercing as he stepped closer once more, his voice low and dangerous. “And what did you want, Sophia? A fairytale? A love story? Did you really think that someone like me could give you that?”
His words hit her like a physical blow, the harsh reality of their marriage laid bare in his brutal honesty. She felt her composure slipping, her resolve crumbling under the weight of his gaze.
“No,” she said, her voice barely above a whisper. “But I expected respect, at the very least. I thought I’d married a man who would honor his commitments.”
He smirked, a cold, mocking smile that made her blood boil. “Respect is earned, Sophia. And so far, all you’ve proven is that you were easily manipulated by rumors and speculation.”
The words stung, a reminder of the photos, the headlines, the whispers that had haunted her every waking moment. She thought confronting him would give her closure, would allow her to walk away with her dignity intact.
But instead, she felt as though she was standing on the edge of a cliff, teetering between anger and heartbreak, unsure of which would consume her first.
“Sign the papers, Alex,” she said, her voice trembling with a mixture of fury and desperation. “End this marriage, and let me go.”
He watched her for a long moment, his expression unreadable. Finally, he picked up the folder, flipping through the pages with an air of detached curiosity.
“If that’s what you really want,” he said, his voice cold and distant. “But don’t think for a second that I’ll make it easy for you.”
He turned and walked out of the study, leaving her standing alone, the weight of his words pressing down on her like a crushing force.
Sophia sank into the chair behind her, her heart pounding as she stared at the empty doorway. She thought handing him the papers would give her the closure she needed, would allow her to reclaim some semblance of control over her life.
But instead, she was left feeling more trapped than ever, bound to a man who refused to let her go, a man who seemed determined to keep her life and her heart under his control.
As the weight of his words sank in, Sophia realized that Alex wouldn’t let her go easily, and this fight for freedom might cost her more than she ever anticipated.
