Prologue

The tension in the room could be cut with a dull knife. The younger man stood before the humongous disk the older man sat behind and glared at the said man. They had been up and down that same road. The older man was being stubborn about the conditions he wanted to finally agree to sell his company, to the younger man. It was one single condition they both had a problem with. The older wanted the sale to happen only after the marriage of his only daughter to the buyer of the company, while Chris only wanted the company, without the hassle of a marriage, of an added thing he wasn’t interested in.   “Mr. Cortez, I’m here for a business proposal, not a marriage, if I wanted to get married, I’m capable of finding my own bride sir, no offense.”   “Here is the thing Baker, this is no proposal, this is the ultimatum, marry my daughter, you get what you want, refuse, and there is no deal or business between us.”   “Sir, I’m willing to pay the double, even the triple price. Sure your daughter isn’t that hideous, that you are forcing her upon someone who doesn’t want to marry at all, let alone her.”   “Hideous? No, she is not hideous, though she is still a woman, which means, a long-lasting headache and a pain in the ass.”   “Mr. Cortez it seems like you aren’t taking me seriously since you’re joking, and seeming laughing at me. I’ll leave my proposal here. Read it, think about it, and remember I’m willing to pay you a price no one ever is willing to offer.”   “There is nothing to think about here Baker. These are my conditions, take it, or leave it. You have two days to let me know your decision. There are three other candidates who are more than willing to marry Rosaline and pay the price I requested to begin with.”   At that moment, Chris knew he didn’t have any other choices. Either marry that girl and lose his freedom or keep his freedom yet lose the company he was willing to do anything to have under his name once again.   With a curt nod, the younger man turned around, and headed out, leaving the estate and already knowing he had made his mind and his decision, already knowing what he was going to do, what he was going to gain and what he was going to lose. He didn’t need those two days to think, though he still hoped that in those two days something might happen, to make the older man change his mind, and sell the company to him without him needing to make any of those decisions.   The two days went by really fast, and two days later, and Chris was sitting there with nothing new, nothing seemed to have changed. He hadn’t heard anything from the other man and knew he hadn’t changed his mind. With a heavy heart, he lifted the phone up to his ear and waited for the latter to answer his call. Once he did, Chris didn’t waste a single second. “You win Cortez, I accept the deal as it is. Set the date for sighing the contracts and the marriage certificate.”
