Chapter 4

Rose's POV The sound of an incoming call woke me up. I opened my eyes quickly before reaching for my phone, hoping it was Victor. I sigh disappointedly after seeing the caller ID. It is James! I did not bother answering his calls. I climbed down from my bed before heading to the bathroom. I took a quick shower before returning to my room. I got dressed before picking up my phone, ready to leave for Victor Blackwood. I can't wait to know what my fate is. I ruffled my hair at James' continuous calls. I pressed the answer button without bothering to confirm if it was James. “Miss Rose Solomon, let's meet.” A deep and familiar voice echoed calmly. It took me a while before I realized the voice belonged to Victor Blackwood. I smiled faintly before replying, “Text me the address.” Even though I know the chance of winning the bet is low, many things have changed compared to my previous life. I took my car key before leaving for the restaurant address Victor texted me. It was a minute ride to the restaurant, which was one of the most expensive restaurants. I slid my hand into my purse before bringing out my phone. I pressed a few buttons before calling Victor. “Just walk in; I sat close to the window,” Victor echoed before I could speak. I hung up before entering the restaurant, maintaining a stern look. I have to make sure not to look nervous. I entered the restaurant, my nose suddenly filled with fragrance from a different angle, compared to yesterday when I almost choked at the smell of cigarettes and alcohol. My eyes scanned the restaurant before they finally landed on Victor Blackwood, who was dressed in a blue T-shirt and black pairs of jeans. I walked up to him before sitting down on the chair facing him. “Did I lose the bet?” I asked, sounding as if I was ready to give my life for a bet. Maybe that is how desperate I am. “You won the bet,” he sounded warm compared to yesterday. “How did you know there was a spy in my company? Are you—” “Haha, I am not a detective,” I cut him off before chuckling. There was a moment of silence between us. From his facial expression, I know he isn't ready to accept the loss. “Since I lost the bet, what do you want?” His voice snapped me out of my thoughts. I hesitated before speaking, hoping I was not asking for too much. “I want your protection and guidance. I know nothing about the business world, but I want to become the CEO of my father's company.” “I can only do one of the two,” Victor said calmly before sipping from his drink. It took me a while before I could decide what to do. I needed his guidance on how to become a competent leader who won't be questioned by her workers and ask for his protection from James' scheme. “I need your guidance more than anything. That way…” The rest of the words stuck in my throat as I flashed back to how I gave everything to James because I was incompetent. This time, not James or Alexis would get a dime from me. “I have a meeting to attend; I will get back to you later,” Victor's words distracted me from my thoughts. “I am about to leave too,” I muttered before I stood up. About to take my leave, I added, “Please attend my birthday party.” I did not wait to hear his response before leaving the restaurant. I got into my car before driving off to James' apartment. I am going to end everything with him today, or I might not be able to avoid dying at James' hands. I pulled over in the estate garage before alighting from my car. I headed to his apartment, which was in building no. 3, third floor. Arriving at the front of his apartment, my steps faltered. “Rose is the most foolish lady I ever knew. Don't worry; she will give you everything she has. Just make her believe you truly love her.” Tears rolled down my face as Alexis' voice echoed. I took a few steps closer to the door so I could hear them. “I know she would have no one to turn aside for me. Who would she make the CEO? Those old hags who are eager to find fault in her? I am her only pick, my love,” James' voice echoed, sweeter and happier than when he spoke with me. Even though I was convinced that he loved me but suddenly got blinded by greed, I realized all that was an act! A mask to ruin me! Behind those smiling faces, sweet words, warm cuddles, and tender touches, a hidden dagger is pointed at me, ready to stab me at any moment! Unable to hold back the anger burning through my veins, I pushed the door open. Fortunately for me, it wasn't locked. I stormed in on them. My gaze landed on James, who was cuddling Alexis but stopped the moment he noticed my presence. “This was it? Was there ever a moment you loved me, James?” Even though it was foolish of me to ask those questions, I couldn't help it. I want to give him the benefit of the doubt. “No!” His voice was cold, loud, and clear, sounding like a different person. The James I know would never speak to me this way. “I think it is time I end this shitty game I am playing with you!” “Game?” My eyes widened at his words as the single word forcefully rolled out. Was the ten years we spent together all a game? So he had been deceiving me? I felt my heart get ripped apart as the truth I couldn't face head-on suddenly became clear with reality dawning on me. “You think I would date a foolish lady like you? I am only with you for your money and because you were Alexis' sister,” he muttered before walking up to me, half-naked. “You have always been Alexis' sister to me and nothing more.” Uncontrollable tears began streaming down my face. He sounded sincere, giving me no chance to doubt him. “Babe, let's end this game we are playing with her. It is time we enjoy our life because I am tired of people thinking you are hers,” the lady I have always seen as my supporter and elder sister spoke coldly, reminding me of how I died. Wait… so ending the game means killing me? My eyes widened in awe as I realized my fate had changed. So I'm going to die today? “I think it is time to end this silly game with Rose,” James' voice echoed before walking closer to me. Without thinking twice, I ran out of his room. I kept running; the sound of my heels clicking against the tiled floor filled the air. Even though I did not turn back to see if James was still chasing after me, I knew he wouldn't back down until he watched me die. Lost in my thoughts, I didn't know the kind of force I felt that made me lose my step and balance. My eyes widened as I felt my body falling slightly. Instead of hitting my head hard on the ground and probably breathing my last, I felt my body on broad arms, carrying me like a baby. I slowly raised my gaze to see if it was James who saved me.
