“Amelia?”
Amigna Trinidad’s tears automatically welled up when she saw the familiar face of Amelia in front of their house that day. After so many years, she finally saw her beloved grandchild that she raised herself after her own daughter-in-law died during childbirth.
“Is that really you, Amelia, darling?” She asked her one more time after escorting her in, eager to wrap her around her arms and kiss her forehead like what she usually did when Amelia was still a kid.
Delighted to see her grandmother again, Amelia did not waste a time and gave her grandmother a warm embrace. “It’s me, Miña. How are you?”
Amigna smiled after hearing Amelia calling her with that Miña nickname again. “I’m fine,” she answered briefly. Then she stroked Amelia’s cheeks lovingly, studying the chestnut colored eyes that she inherited from her late mother.
That said, her grandmother’s gaze eventually fell to the small human standing behind Amelia’s legs, acting a bit shy to the stranger in front of her.
“Come on, Caden, introduce yourself to your grandmother.”
Realizing that the old woman in front of them is the grandmother his mother always talks about, Caden politely smiled at Amigna and greeted her. “Hi…I’m Caden and I’m four,” he said, raising four of his fingers to emphasize the number to the old woman.
Amigna, confused, lifted her eyebrow to Amelia as if silently asking the identity of that child.
Knowing her grandmother’s mannerism, Amelia bit her lip and exhaled, gathering all the strength and confidence she practiced to have. “Caden’s my son,” she revealed as her fingers twitched in nervousness.
“Your son?”
“Yes.”
“Father?”
“Yes.”
“What ‘yes’, Amelia, I am asking you here seriously and you answer me with ‘yes’?”
Amelia hissed, trying to ease off the uneasiness that she’s feeling. “Is father here?” She enquired instead, trying to divert her grandmother’s attention.
But her grandmother seems too wise to be trapped by her bait. “He’s outside for a business trip. Now, answer me, who is the father of your son?”
With no other choice, Amelia breathed deeply and she was about to tell her grandmother the whole story when her Aunt Aria suddenly came in.
“Oh, a guest, I’m sorry for barging, Mama,” she apologized as she studied Amelia from head to toe. “Who’s this beautiful lady?” she added with a disapproving look veiled in a welcoming smile.
“Don’t you remember your niece, Amelia?” the old Trinidad said.
Aria’s eyes widened, her hands instinctively closed her opened mouth and exclaimed, “Amelia, who? Do you mean that girl who ran away from her wedding because uh… Amelia…” She can’t seem to continue what she’s going to say when she suddenly sees the child behind Amelia, tugging at the hem of her niece’s blouse. Oh my god, she just prayed inside her head. Let the child be the child of someone else and not Amelia. Worse, don’t make this kid a Morris bloodline.
“So? So what if I ran? You can marry that bastard if you want to.”
Aria just shuddered at her niece’s suggestion. “Uh, well, that’s your choice. Not my problem.”
Noticing the newcomer’s intense gaze on him, Caden spoke. “Hi, I’m Caden and I’m four,” he said, mimicking the motions he did earlier when he first introduced himself to Amigna.
“Hi, Caden. I’m Aria, call me Aunty Aria, okay?”
But Amelia is quick to straighten the misconception in her aunt’s head. “He’s my son,” she declared to Aria then to Caden, she spoke again. “Call her Grandma Aria, she’s my aunt, okay?” she reminded her son, copying the tone of her Aunt Aria when saying okay.
“What? I’m a grandma,” Aria blurted out but then she also realized why. “Oh, I’m a grandma…” Then she thinks again. “But I’m too young to be a grandma,” she protested.
Soon after, Amelia recalled and told her Aunt and Grandma what happened to her five years ago and the reason why she decided to run away from Alejandro, ending her story with the purpose of her return to their country to meet her ex-fiance.
Learning her circumstances, Amelia gained the sympathy of her family, especially her grandmother, who understood Amelia’s struggle during childbirth. They also both agreed to babysit Caden for the meantime.
The next day, Amelia went out to go to the Morris’ Main Office. She’s rehearsing the line’s that she’s going to throw to Alejandro when the taxi that she’s in suddenly makes her find another taxi or transportation to take since its tire got a hole in it.
Because of that, Amelia found the need to push herself in a cramped bus despite wearing designer clothes that her sister gifted her for her birthday. Clutching the expensive purse to her chest, Amelia tried to ignore the judgemental stares thrown at her in public until she arrived at her destination.
Inside, she’s immediately stopped by a guard upon her entrance.
“Why? Do you need my ID?” she asked innocently, looking inside her bags to find her passport. “I already called earlier and talked with Mr. Morris’ assistant. Told him that I want to talk to his boss today.”
But the guard just looked at Amelia and how messy she looks right now, with sweat still trickling from her neck as if she came out from a sauna. But despite that, he agrees that the woman is beautiful and that’s what makes her position worse since they are always reminded in the agency that looks can be deceiving.
To confirm what she said about talking with the secretary, the guard called the secretarial office to inform them about the woman’s arrival and read the name written on Amelia’s presented ID. “Yes, it's Ms. Amelia Trinidad.”
Trinidad sounds like the surname of one of the company’s VIPs but then, it’s better to be careful than sorry.
A couple of minutes later, Ethan Gaior arrives at the ground floor and for seconds, he’s taken aback by how Amelia looks. But he immediately composes himself and shows her the way to Alejandro’s office.
When they finally arrived, Amelia opened the door with a raised eyebrow to Ethan, warning him not to eavesdrop at their conversation. “I don’t know you, are you new? Don’t listen to our conversation, can you? And guard the door. We don’t like to be interrupted.”
After that, Amelia went in, staring straight at the man who’s caught in surprise by her arrival, Alejandro Morris. The eyesore of Morris Family.
