Part#13

Declyn returns from his stroll with the two kids. He’s spent just over two hours with them and without their screaming and fussing, he enjoys having them with him and decided to do an experiment of his own … It went well, but … Just as a naughty child getting ready for trouble, he approaches the porch with care. Blue sleeps on the swing which brings a genuine blissful temperament over him. He enjoys the view of her even if she appears to be a bundle of shambles. She fits in his home like she has always been there and he loves everything about it. He wants her to be happy more than anything. The entire picture is serene … Until his foot touches the wooden step. It creaks. The sound of it jolts a set of wild, blonde curls awake. Huge gold-amber eyes stretch wide as she jolts upright, ready to fight. “Hi,” he shuffles past. The seats with the gurgling, chatty babes hide behind his back “I’m, uh, just going to take them up and put them to sleep.” “I fell asleep, sorry,” she apologises which makes him smile. This girl is abnormally enthralling to him. He has never been around a coven-raised donor, and certainly not any kind of girl the likes of her. Even half asleep, he feels the built- up of protective energy for the children. Like last night, she makes him want to do things; like kiss her forehead and tell her to go back to sleep. Things like cleaning up the kids before she catches on to what he did. While she rubs over her face, he blurs away quickly. Declyn rushes to get everything done. He hears Blue’s approach. He knows if she sees this she is going to freak out. He is guilty of thoroughly having enjoyed himself, though. Being out with the children roused instincts in him stronger than his objection to them. They were no help and encouraged it with their own behaviour – yet another matter he had not anticipated. Cleaning Venus’ hands, she starts with a slow cry which quickly escalates into full screams. Her hands open and closes at him. “Oh, no-no-no. Gods stop that!” he hushes the baby, quickly turning to her brother to fix his hands too. Eros is not to be outdone, and he joins his sister’s screams. They’re angry screams and cries. Angry at him for cleaning them! The door behind him bursts open before Declyn decides what to do. Blue’s eyes are wide and there’s a light behind the gold-yellow he has only ever seen in the wild! She turns pale, her mouth opens wide but not a sound comes from it. Delyn looks down over himself and closes his eyes briefly. Oh, this is not good! Now, like the children, he is covered in blood. No matter how hard he tries, both kids screams as if they’re being murdered, by him. His fingers clutch at Eros’ chest while he taps against Venus’ making the same shushing sounds he’s heard Blue make without the same results. With a glance at her, he speaks fast, all be it in a calm manner. Frozen horror on her face tells him she is beyond frightened but the fire in her eyes builds and the tension in her body springloads. “Blue, they’re fine, they’re fine ...” he tries to filter through to her brain. Anticipating her next move, Declyn watches Blue wobble back and forth on her feet. He knows without a doubt, when the bundle of human frees herself from whatever trap she’s in now, he is going to have more than his hands full. “Blue,” he speaks more urgent this time “I fed them. They really like the squirrels and – ” What do I do now? Leave the brats to their tantrum because I took the stupid snacks off them, or leave the girl at the door who’s cooking up one hell of a storm, about to unleash it upon me? “Blue! You must help me, they need you. I can’t –” And that isn’t the right choice of words; I may as well tell her I tried to eat them. In a rage, she storms. In slow motion to him, identical to the night before, she is a whirlwind of snarls, claws and kicks. The attack is more ferocious than before – at a guess, Declyn thinks it is because before the children weren’t crying to begin with. He holds her hands off but the chaos increases. Eventually, Declyn changes his decision. He shoves the squirrels back at the kids. Instantly the stop screaming. Then he turns on Blue. A wrist in each of his hands, he drives her with his body into the wall. She growls, roar and grunt at him, tries to hit him with her head once he restrains the rest of her body and refuses to stop. “BLUE!” He shouts at her; a growl of his own pushes from his chest along with the words. It sounds menacing but really, Declyn fights hard to control the effect she has on him in this moment. It is not hurting he has in mind … Not at all. She freezes, a blank expression pulls over her face and whatever goes on behind her eyes, is locked away firmly and he cannot reach beyond the dull glaze in her eyes, “I said, they are fine!” Fear. Fear the likes of which he tastes on the air to arouse a beast inside, rushes at him from her. Anxiety and panic chokes her breathing and the sound forces him to turn his head away and take a deep, sobering breath. This is not what he hoped to achieve. His heart thunders, his body yearns and the sounds from her … Blue sobs, her small body rattles under his grip and Declyn rolls his eyes at the ceiling, muttering about the gods punishing him, and not having a previous life to blame. Oh s**t! I want nothing more than to toy with her and make her cry more now – but I hate that she’s crying. What is going on with me?! I want this girl so bad, for all the wrong reasons! Dear gods what have I done, I’m in over my head! “Don’t do that,” he snaps at her, “Don’t cry.” She sucks the tremoring bottom lip into her mouth and bite down. No sound comes from her while tears streaks down her face. Her body still shakes and he realises his grip on her wrists is crushing. Can this get any worse? All I wanted to do was to see if my theory about them being meat-eaters was right and give her time to rest. How was I supposed to know they’d enjoy it so much and use the damn things as chewing rings? Now there’s this mess with her reaction is the most stirring thing in me; I want to hurt her just to console her! This is bad! This is beautiful, and sensual, and so very bad! “There – is – s-so much – b-blood!” she sobs and Declyn turns to Venus who is the closest. He lifts the animal’s tail by way of demonstrating to Blue what set them off. Venus readies for a tantrum at the mere notion of losing her ‘catch’. “It is a squirrel. I caught them each one. They really like the damn things. I didn’t know they’d pretend I’m slaughtering them if I take it away! I wanted to clean them up before you saw and ... Well, before you do exactly what I thought you’d might – which you did,” he finally ends with a drag of his hand through is hair. “Squirrels? Real, live, genuinely wild, cuddly little squirrels? You fed – the babies – squirrels?! What is wrong with you?!” Blue is back, and Declyn is relieved. He turns a sharp look on her. “I’m not a vampire; I think that is the first thing that is wrong with me,” Declan takes delight in the teasing. Blue is still messed up but he is convinced it is for an entirely different reason now. He gets to understand that genuine terror from the coven members when he handed out the kids and they landed in her arms. At first, he didn’t bother with their worry much. But now? She’s a mental strangeness, and keeping up with her is a challenge he never thought he’d welcome or want – but she had an entire coven on edge, including their prince, Antoine. She has power over them that she has no concept of, and they do not recognise it for what it is! For a fraction of a millisecond, just now, experience it for himself. It appeals to him on so, many, levels! His heart enjoys hearing the race in Blue’s. Her tirade presses through his dream-like thoughts and yanks his attention back to her. “… and they’re babies, Declyn! You can’t just catch something with diseases – or that cute! – and feed it to them! It needs, washing, or something!” Is she scolding me? This is one for the books! Declyn strangles his humour and keeps it silent. He does not push the matter of her obstinacy, because he still senses the adrenaline response and he isn’t sure he’d be able to keep himself in check if she comes at him again. On the one hand, he does not like that she holds back because she fears him and he itches to stir her wrath; on the other, he did just ram her into a wall and let the animal inside him snatch at her from the cage.
