Drake eased the shuttle to a stop just a few feet from the portal with its small airlock facing the eerie phenomenon. As far as the shuttle sensors were concerned there was nothing there, just empty space. It seemed the portal could only be detected with the human eye.
Drake moved to the shuttle airlock and opened it, staring across the short distance to the portal. He activated his comm.
“I’m going over,” he said.
“We’ll be waiting for you, Captain,” replied Sonia. “How long do we leave it before we send in the cavalry?”
“You don’t. The portal only has enough energy to allow one person in and then back out. Send anyone else and we’ll both be trapped there. Wait here until I come back or the portal closes. If the portal closes then make sure you get the crew to safety.”
