CHAPTER 3

1093 Words
Old money is best defined by Lucas Brown. Because his ancestors were astute enough to start building and establishing themselves at a young age, their offspring and grandchildren are now reaping the rewards of their hard work years later. Growing up, he was a very fine man. The women swarmed around him, just like flies do around a corpse, just like Ethan. He met Emily, Ethan's mother, when he was 24 and she was 22. Lucas Brown, heir to a legacy of old money, and Emily, a woman with a deep connection to the black community despite her white heritage, first crossed paths at a protest against racism. Their eyes locked in the middle of the passionate speeches and the ardent crowd. The injustice they had witnessed black people endure at the hands of white racists had kindled a fire inside both of them. When Emily took the stage to speak up for the rights of the black community, he was drawn to her unwavering commitment. As Emily spoke, her words resonated with Lucas on a profound level. He was impressed by her intelligence as well as her unwavering devotion to justice. Their relationship was ignited in the midst of the protest signs and chants during that intense moment. Her elegance and passion captured Lucas's attention.Emily would respond, "It was the way he looked at me and never took his eyes off, like if he left me unwatched even for a second, I was going to disappear," when asked what drew him to Emily. He would respond, "Her intelligence; you should have seen her basking on that stage defending the black community and when Emily was asked, she would say “It was the way he looked at me and never took his eyes off, like if he left me unwatched even for a second, I was going to disappear”. Lucas' father still ran the business, so he could live as he liked. However, his father died of a heart attack a few days after he turned 25. With no knowledge of how the company was run, Lucas felt stuck. Emily's father had many connections because he was the mayor at the time. Despite his love for Emily, Lucas wasn't prepared to get married. His mother persuaded him to the contrary, since they relied on Emily's father's connections to keep the company operating and out of the hands of avaricious robbers posing as stockholders. They then tied the knot. Everything flowed smoothly for years, but Emily didn't take it in. That wasn't an issue; they were still young. However, by then, Lucas had become a big business tycoon, and money was flowing in, as was the attention of other women. Sensing that he was being forced into marriage and not being able to enjoy his youth, he met other women, especially Rose. She was his covert romantic partner. They connected at a Canadian wedding reception. She was the bridesmaid, and Lucas was drawn to her because she was beautiful and enigmatic. His attraction to her grew stronger and stronger. But he told himself he was going to stay faithful to his wife. Call it coincidence or fate, Rose started showing up wherever he was, be it a party or a gathering of his business associates. He was unable to resist any longer as they spoke and their bond grew stronger. He yielded. They started dating covertly and went on several international trips together. He went so far as to get her a posh apartment. But Rose had her plans; she stopped taking her contraceptives and got pregnant. She hid the pregnancy, and when it was too late to get an abortion, she showed up on Lucas' doorstep. He either marries her or she goes public with the news. Having a reputation to protect, he had no other choice. Emily, his first wife, wasn't pleased with the news of the marriage. No woman would, but she continued to stay. Emily took in three years after Rose gave birth. She was overjoyed, and now she had someone to fill in the void of loneliness that was creeping in. Getting a divorce was out of the question; she would rather not ruin her dad's political career. She left the home she shared with Lucas and Rose after giving birth to Ethan, only returning when called upon. Lucas continued to see Ethan in spite of her. He had every right because he was the father."Good evening, sir." Ethan welcomed his dad as he entered the spacious living area. “Ah, my boy! How are you? How was the meeting with the hotel's board of directors?” It was alright. I've got this covered. "Alright, good." He took up the TV remote, turned down the sound, and fixed his gaze on Ethan as though attempting to formulate a response. He grinned; the boy was exactly like him. "Why did you ask to see me, Dad?" Ethan questioned agitatedly. "Are you still with the daughter of General Joseph, Emma?" "No, tell me why you ask," "I have only seen you with this girl. What took place? "We split up. When did you start showing interest in my romantic life? "I am intrigued by this because it relates to the topic I will be discussing shortly. Have you succeeded in getting us the railroad contract? "Not really. the mayor is being a headache; elections are coming, so he's acting like that's the only thing on his mind currently, so I need to give him time.” “But we don't have that time; what's the issue?” The Green Harmony Alliance is demonstrating against the construction of railroad tracks because they believe it will negatively impact the surrounding ecosystem. The mayor needs to appear pacifist to everyone, so he doesn't want to voice his opinion or disagree with them because elections are soon. With no interest in what the news reporter had to say, Lucas turned away from Ethan and glanced at the TV. There was no need for that. He won't retain that seat after the election. Do you know Jonathan Williams at all?" "The former Citibank president?" Indeed, he is! He wishes to run in the next election. If he prevails, the Brown group of companies will benefit, we will support him, and the mayor can burn in hell. Lucas questioned how this was his business, given that this was a political matter. "How does this affect me personally?" "Well, your role in this whole thing is to wed his daughter. Next month, she will arrive by plane from England."
