Since she was a college student, Olivia has never enjoyed going home. It had the atmosphere of an unfamiliar place or planet. She never seemed to fit in with her parents' schedule or way of life; there were always visitors she needed to greet and say “hello” to, and so many events she needed to attend just to'show your face', according to her parents, presenting their family as a happy family of three. She never asked for any of it; she wanted none of it. The universe just shoved it at her, and now she has to deal. Life was manageable when her dad was just the president of a bank. Now that he might run for mayor of New York City, it seems she might never get to live the simple life she craved. Initially, she had no plans to return home after completing her master’s degree. Already a cat owner and awaiting a job response, she received an unexpected call from her mother, who implored her to return, expressing their deep longing and a desire to reconcile. Despite New York not being her ideal haven, the thought of reuniting with David after three long years pulled her back to her hometown. Traveling home shouldn't be that bad of a decision. Even now, New York was bustling with all of its familiar faces, going about their everyday lives. To stay afloat in this crowd and in this life, you needed to know where you were going. "Miss Olivia, Miss Olivia!" When she heard her name, she spun around to see Mr. Israel gave her a wave. Good day, Mr. Israel. "Olivia, my love, welcome home."The roads were still the same, and traffic seemed to have doubled. A group of people stood on one side of the road with placards and said, “Sir, what is going on?” The driver answered, Olivia. "They are government employees demonstrating for a pay raise; their pay does not keep up with the rising cost of living." Her parents lived on an estate that was heavily guarded by security personnel. No one was able to pass the gate unless they made a phone call to the assigned residence. It even had its own electricity transformer, so it didn't partake in the cries of other New Yorkers whenever there was an electricity situation, though an electricity crisis rarely occurred. Olivia grew up in this neighborhood and spent her entire life here. David's parents lived in the adjacent building; they weren't much around, just like Olivia's parents, so Olivia and David connected over their shared loneliness. She would wait until tomorrow was a weekend, arrive at his door, and exclaim, "Surprise!" David would then give her a hug, pull her up, and refuse to let go. David is at work right now.The fact that David and Olivia never shared anything personal still shocks me. Olivia told her there was nothing wrong when her mother had suspicions about the two of them. David had always been the reserved type, and upon reflection, she realized he had never been in a relationship. This left her wondering why they had never pursued a romantic connection.
Upon arriving home, her parents were conspicuously absent. The housekeeper informed her that they had left for a meeting. Olivia took a shower after unpacking her things, feeling comforted and relieved from the tension of her journey by the chilly water. She refused to stay awake for them. They would never return on schedule. She had learned this lesson through difficult experiences. Nevertheless, she was surprised when they returned, just as she was wrapping up her meal. Upon seeing her, her father exclaimed, "My precious jewel, my queen." "Good evening, Dad." She embraced him. "Hey sweetie, how are you? How went the journey? Did you not enjoy New York? Her father laughed in response. It was a good trip, though I did miss New York. Where is Mummy? Worried, she enquired. "She's coming; she's helping the housekeeper offload them; she got some stuff for you." In response, her father undid the buttons on his suit, which was colored gray. “ Mom, Hey! Olivia greeted her mother as she entered space. "My darling! You have made us proud, my darling, as the first black medical student to graduate from Oxford at the age of twenty-four.Come give me a hug. She let Olivia fall into her arms. You've obviously eaten. Williams, it's time to get down to business, as tomorrow holds great importance. "Mummy, what business?" Olivia gave them a nervous glance. Her father said, "The business of marriage, my love." "Wedding? Who is tying the knot? Would you like to have another wife? Her mother started laughing. Olivia Williams, you are the one getting married. Ethan Brown of the Brown Group will be your spouse. Olivia gave them a bewildered look. This cannot take place. Olivia was hearing things that she couldn't believe. Marrige? Addressed to Ethan Brown of the Brown Group, she felt like she had just been hit with a shocking revelation. Her life wasn't meticulously planned, and marriage wasn't on her immediate agenda, at least not at the moment. She paused to gather her thoughts, seeking to understand the situation.
Her aspirations revolved around a career in medicine, making her own choices, living independently, and taking life one step at a time.
"Why didn't we have a discussion about this earlier?" she inquired.I have my plans, my own life."
Olivia finally managed to say, her voice laced with frustration.
Her parents exchanged knowing looks, and her mother, the more tactful of the two, addressed Olivia, "Olivia, we realize this may be unexpected, but we've given it considerable thought. The Brown family holds a prestigious position, and this union would be advantageous for your father's political career and our family's future."It's an opportunity we cannot afford to let slip by," her mother reiterated.
Olivia found it incredulous that, even after all these years, they still believed they held the power to control her life decisions.
