CHAPTER 10

940 Words
Days later, Ethan made good on his threat and barred Paul from entering his office. He left a message with his secretary. “Tell him he's fired. If he has any issue with my decision, he can call his father.” The next day, Paul arrived at Lucas's estate and unleashed a loud cry. His brow was scowled, his jaw was so tightly locked that the muscles in his cheeks swelled, and his eyes were red with frustration. “Dad! Dad!” He bellowed with every step he took. Lucas had just woke up from a lovely nap when he heard Paul's voice. After getting his phone off the side table, he went downstairs. “Continue screaming like that, and you'll cause a volcano to erupt. What's the matter with you this afternoon?” He settled into his seat. “I got to the hotel today, and my office was locked. I thought it was maybe faulty, so I asked my secretary to get the security officers. Maybe someone knew something. To my utter disbelief, I was told that your son Ethan had locked me out and left a message that I had been fired.” Lucas was uncertain about how to respond. His primary focus on comprehending the underlying reason for Ethan's conduct rather than the exclusion of Paul. “What did you do?” He didn't look at Paul and continued scrolling through his phone, waiting for Ethan's number to appear. “Is that what's most important?” Karen appeared on the staircase. “Lucas, is that what's most important? Your son is complaining of an atrocity committed against him by another of your sons, and you're asking him what he did?” She marched toward him, arms akimbo. “Atrocity? Atrocity is a strong word, Karen.” Lucas ignored her and kept scrolling through his phone. “My son didn't do anything! And even if he did, it doesn't warrant being thrown out of his father's hotel.” “You don't even know what he did. You don't even care to know what he did, and you're already shouting like a madwoman.” His phone beeped. “Did you just call me mad? You called me mad just because I'm calling you and your nonsense son out for oppressing my son.” Karen burst out wailing. Already annoyed, Lucas stood up to meet her. “I didn't call you mad, I'm just saying you can't decide if you don't know what happened.” He rubbed her back gently. “Ethan is just being bitter, he's always been bitter. He's still frustrated about his good-for-nothing mother abandoning him, and now he's transferring aggression to my sweet baby.” She pulled away from Lucas and strolled toward her son, who hugged her tightly. “At least the abandoned son didn't squander 800 billion of the company's funds. So much for home training, Karen.” Ethan walked into the room. A deep silence enveloped the room. “800 billion what?” Lucas and Karen asked in unison. Paul quickly moved away from his mother. Lucas stared at Paul with a mixture of anger and regret. “Paul, what did you do with 800 billion dollars?” Paul realized he had gotten himself in a mess and now regretted coming to meet his dad. “I didn't do anything with it because I didn't take it.” He had to save his head, even if it meant lying. Ethan, who had seated himself at the bar, poured a glass of Olive's dad's whiskey. Everything reminded him of her. “800 billion dollars were signed off by you for use, it's on the account records.” Lucas shifted his attention from Paul to Ethan and then back to Paul. “You better start talking, don't make me rip your head from your neck.” Lucas was about to surge up, and the room shook by the enormity of what he was feeling. Karen walked toward him, trying to soothe him, but he shunned her. “Don't get me more upset.” “You used 800 billion to gallivant around with girls, clubbing, and drinking, and you had the effrontery to walk into my house, wake me up from my nap, and yell like a mad dog.” “Lucas, calm down,” Karen began to plead. “It's not the money that hurts right now, it's the fact that I thought you had an atom of potential and discipline. You are useless!” Lucas walked away, his steps heavy. Paul approached Ethan, pointing a finger at him. “You will pay for that.” Ethan chuckled. “How, love?” Mimicking Paul's voice from the other day Karen finally regained her composure and stared at Ethan, who met her gaze. She went to meet him "I have noticed that you're striving to separate this family," You don't want to see us satisfied because you're unhappy and alone. You've carried the bitterness of your mother abandoning you from childhood until today. I despise you.” “And I loathe you. I've watched you for all these years, sneaking your way around Dad, getting whatever you want, you and your children. You're wicked, Karen, and your venom has spread to your children.” She lifted her hand to slap Ethan, who quickly held her hand. “Let this be the last time you raise your hand to hit me. And let this be the last time you mention my mother using that dirty mouth of yours. You wouldn't like what I'd do next time.” He dropped her hand with force and walked away.
