Karrah's Recounting

1550 Words
"As you know, mom, I applied and was approved to leave this Temple as a High Priestess Healer, despite being the head healer. I was stationed and accepted in the Midnight Skye pack. I got there pretty close to Luna Maelynne's delivery time. At most, she was three weeks away. At least, only days away. In the two weeks I was there, warriors and messengers were lost. It started off pretty slow. Then about four days ago, maybe five, almost all the patrol groups were taken out... none of the messengers returned." She took a deep breath and continued. "Alpha Jax assumed that none of the messengers made it to the neighboring packs because none returned. The stress was getting hard on my Luna. So three days ago, I put her on bed rest. I was hoping that'd help her calm down and prevent early labor. It seemed to be working until there was another rogue attack. Her older brother Rex was one of the pack warriors on patrol. There were about fifty rogues that entered the territory and ripped apart every warrior on patrol." Karrah paused enough to collect her thoughts and breathe. She got a cup of tea and a small pastry. Taking a bite of the pastry, she closed her eyes for just a moment before taking a sip of tea. Her mother sat there patiently sipping her tea and eating the snacks on her plate. "This practically broke Luna Maelynne. Before I knew it, her water broke. Alpha Jax started panicking and repeatedly asking me if they'd survive. Five minutes later, Beta Chase rushed into their room. We were being attacked by a massive group of rogues. He called them a horde. Mom, we only had 600 pack members left. Most were children. Some of these pups haven't even shifted yet. Alpha Jax mind linked our pack and split our remaining warriors between points outside and each floor of the pack house." Karrah paused as she started crying. "Beta Chase was stationed at the back while Alpha Jax stayed out front. Each had six pack warriors. Each side had seven warriors and four pack warriors were stationed on each floor. Some helped get women, children, and the elderly to other packs surrounding us. Others fought along the border of our territory. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if some of our pack members made it here like we did. Before Alpha Jax left, he told me to get what I needed from his reserved medical store closet and to save Luna Maelynne and their child." Karrah paused and took a deep breath, a sip of tea, and a bite of her pastry. "I grabbed everything I needed, including a baby blanket, and rushed back to my Luna to start delivery. Her head was already out. I placed my hands under her head just as Luna pushed. Her shoulders came out one after another. For a couple of minutes, she was stuck. Then Luna gave one good push and she fell into my arms. I wrapped her in the blanket, extended a claw, cut the umbilical cord, and used my magick to quickly clean her. I handed her to Luna Maelynne and mind linked the pack. I congratulated Alpha Jax and Luna Maelynne through the mind link so the pack could hear it... told them it was a girl." Karrah paused and looked at her mom. "Her name is Sable Fae Rivers, mom. She has Alpha blood from both her parents. They named her together. Alpha Jax wanted me to get Sable and Luna Maelynne out of there, and she refused. She said that she'd just slow me down. She called out to Maxius and had him meet me in the secret tunnels. I held Alpha Sable as close to me as I could and used my magick to block her cries and her scent. Before I left with her, Luna mind linked her face and laugh to Alpha Jax and the rest of the pack. Sable is an Elemental Wolf." Head High Priestess Laurel's eyes went wide and she glanced over to the little one beside her. "Luna pushed herself out of bed and pushed the secret button to open the passage for me and the Secret War Room. She told me to go and not look back. As soon as I walked through, she pushed the button again and went into the war room. I hope that she made it in there and closed it from inside. If it's even possible, I held her even closer to me as I descended the flight of stairs I was now standing on top of. I stayed in the middle of the stairway as I carefully ran downstairs. I was coming from the fourth floor. Each floor that I passed had a landing." Karrah couldn't help smiling at this part. "I smelled this incredible scent of pine and cinnamon... and there was an irresistible pull towards that enticing scent. My wolf Angel and I knew it was our mate, but we had to get Sable here to safety. I rushed down the last flight of stairs, and he met us halfway. We all, us and our wolves, said 'Mate' at the same time. I pushed us through until we were through all the gates. However, when we got to the first gate, he shifted so that I could ride to make it faster. After we got to the entrance, Alpha Jax summoned Air to cause a strong enough gust of wind to clear our path. Once he did that, we ran." At this point in Karrah's recounting of the events to her mother and Head High Priestess, Laurel, the rogue that helped them came in, bowed to Laurel and sat down. "After about a mile away from the pack house, we stopped just a few seconds to catch our breath, though not really enough to count as a break. Then one of the multitudes of feral werewolves jumped at us. That's when this kind rogue here jumped in and defended us. He never gave us his name. Just that he's not feral and came to help. He came with us all the way here as our bodyguard, even though he didn't have to. Mom, he saved us." The rogue's eyes widened a bit at the last sentence, but he didn't say a word. "We stopped just at the edge of our territory. I told them we were here, and we headed to the door. I knocked and when I came to, I noticed that I was inside the temple on the emergency day beds. That's when I brought my mate to see you, mom." She sat back a little and glanced over at little Alpha Sable. Suddenly, Alpha Sable mind linked everyone. 'Hello Everyone. Thank-you for saving us.' Sable cooed and laughed. This quartet of adult werewolves all widened their eyes, staring at the newborn pup. The rogue was the first to speak aloud. "Was that... baby Alpha Sable?" he asked not only in disbelief... but in awe. "I... I don't know. Her voice was sweet… like honey." Maxius answered. "Mom? Any ideas? I'm a bit rusty and going through a lot right now, so I'm having a hard time thinking." Karrah said softly. A light, but hearty chuckle sounded in their minds as Sable mind linked everyone again. 'Actually, I'm Sable's wolf, Amethyst. She was born with me.' came an amused reply. "Sweetheart, all werewolves are born with their wolves. It's just that they're normally sleeping until the pup is between the ages of fourteen and seventeen. Though the most common age is sixteen." Laurel replied aloud. Amethyst chuckled. 'I know. My apologies. I should've been more clear. She was born with me awake. Thank-you all for what you've done for us and what you'll do for us in the future... you and your wolves.' Amethyst said simply. Their eyes widened as Amethyst chuckled and continued. 'You'll see soon. Goodnight, everyone.' With that, Amethyst quit talking and both she and Sable went back to sleep. For about ten minutes, they sat there in silence contemplating what Amethyst had just told them... and the fact that Sable's wolf was already awake and able to mind link. Head High Priestess Laurel looked over to the rogue. "Nice to see you again, Vestuvious. How have you been?" Laurel asked. He smiled gently at her before answering her. "Good to see you too, Laurel. How have you been?" the rogue now identified as Vestuvious responded. "Really good. Found my mate and lost him soon after you left. He rejected me. I'm still waiting for my second chance mate. If the Moon Goddess sees fit to grant me one.." Laurel stated with a familiar sparkle in her eyes. Vestuvious looked at her with the same sparkle. With surprise evident in his voice, he asked her. "Do you know why he rejected you?" Laurel looked over to Karrah and responded. "Because of our daughter. He wanted to have pups of his own without adding to a pre-made family." Karrah's eyes widened in shock as she looked slowly over to Vestuvious. She had so many questions that she didn't know where to begin. Instead, she allowed herself to stay silent and process this new information.
