Becoming a World Top Model

“Miss Chang, get in the car immediately!” My consciousness jolted as dozens of reporters appeared in the apartment lobby. I didn’t realize they were looking for me. But the bald-headed man’s voice interrupted me, as if it were for my safety. For what? No one knew me. No one knew who I was. I was … a nobody. I remained silent until the bald man forcibly pulled me away. I walked through the tight security, forced to lower my head and hide my face. All the reporters began to swarm me. Instead of feeling proud, I was now starting to feel confused. Did it have something to do with my photos being plastered in all those advertisements and all over the media? “What’s really going on?” I finally asked. This car seemed familiar. It was a limousine, every corner of it was perfectly sleek and luxurious. It gave off an expensive impression, even from every angle. I saw a driver wearing a hat hurrying through the crowd of reporters, until we finally broke free. “You’re now a top model in the world.” The words startled me. Suddenly, I realized Alex was already there. I smiled broadly. The air, which had been stuffy before, now felt fresher. I took a deep breath, filling my brain with oxygen so I could process everything. “How is that possible?” I asked, still in disbelief. Alex smiled faintly and handed me the stack of magazines he’d been holding. I saw my face filled the covers. This was madness! I didn’t even think I’d ever posed or taken a photo like that, and how was this possible? “Didn’t I tell you, Stefani? If you succeed in pleasing Mr. Khill, you’ll get what you want instantly.” This was impossible! Was Mr. Khill that powerful, that he gave me instant fame? He could make me a top model so easily, and without me even lifting a finger. “Now, stop using that little brain of yours. You have a lot of work to do today.” “What?” “Photo shoots for several well-known brands, commercial shoots, and interviews at a TV station. And tonight, you’ve been specially invited by Mr. Khill to attend his company’s anniversary party.” I swallowed hard. The ripple of happiness I’d initially let out faded. I remembered my last thought before leaving the apartment. It was about… Mr. Khill. I wanted to ask Alex, hoping he’d know something. But I realized asking Alex here was impossible. Mr. Khill had his driver with us, and I was sure he had someone everywhere to reach him easily. “What’s wrong with your face, Stefani? Isn’t this what you wanted? You should be happy, right?” Alex teased me. I looked down. “Of course I’m very happy! But…” I stopped. I looked down, intertwining my fingers nervously. “It feels like a dream, and it’s just weird. So I’m not sure what to do.” Alex chuckled, glancing at me again. “Stupid!” he said. “Later, I’ll teach you slowly. Relax, and enjoy your popularity before you’re overtaken.” Overtaken? Before long, we stopped at a seven-star hotel. My car door was opened by Mr. Khill’s bodyguard, and Alex immediately pulled me out. “For the next two days, you’ll be staying at this hotel with your mother. Afterward, you’ll have a luxury apartment, property, and a lot of money.” “Where did all this come from?” I asked, confused. I felt like I still hadn’t worked. “Of course, it came from Mr. Khill!” Alex leaned in close. “He really likes you, you’re lucky to have all this. As far as I know, you’re the first woman to have all this luxury.” I turned around. “Were there other women before?” I asked. Stupid! Shouldn’t I have known this? Before I even entered his apartment, I saw a woman injured, badly. Was that one of the aspiring models who failed to satisfy Mr. Khill? I felt goosebumps! “Um, Alex, can I ask you a question?” I whispered finally. My curiosity was high, and came unbidden. Alex turned around, waiting for me to speak again. “Do you know if Mr. Khill is… human?” Alex’s brow furrowed, then he smacked me on the head. “What are you asking, you i***t! Do you think Mr. Khill is a genie who came out of a magic lamp?” he retorted. I knew he didn’t understand my question. “I mean—” “Of course he’s human. It’s just that he’s incredibly rich. He owns the world’s largest agency, capable of turning anyone into a top model, he owns a property company, and is the world’s most sought-after investor. What else?” he explained. That rich… Then why was he satisfied with me? Couldn’t he find someone better than me? Was it because I was… a virgin? Before I knew it, Alex and I were standing in a room, and inside was Miss Jill, who immediately hugged me with a beaming smile on her face. It was a far cry from what she’d shown last time. She was angry, annoyed, and disappointed in me. “Finally, my source of wealth has arrived!” she said. I smiled wryly. “You have to get ready, Stefani. You have a photo shoot with some of the world’s most famous brands soon. You know, thirty brands are already lining up to sign contracts with you!” she exclaimed. She was hysterical and proud. I knew the more I worked, the more money she made. But I didn’t mind! This was my dream, to become a top world model and make my mother happy. In fact, right now I was wondering what that damn man’s expression will be like when he saw the daughter he abandoned become far more successful than him? If he came to me begging, I’ll make sure he’d ashamed of himself for abandoning me and my mother! I was led inside, seated, and then given makeup by the country’s leading makeup artist. I knew her! Who would have thought I’d see her in person? “I think Freya’s crying right now,” Alex muttered. Freya. I knew who that woman was. I lowered my head, a pang of guilt welling up inside me. “Hah, she regrets rejecting me. Now she’s been cast aside! Such an arrogant woman doesn’t deserve to be successful in this job for long!” Mrs. Jill looked satisfied. And I chose to remain silent. The hotel room door opened, and I saw the man who had been in the same bed as me this morning standing in the doorway. I gripped the hem of my dress, my heart pounding. “Can you leave us alone?” he demanded. His voice was deep and full of emphasis. Everyone in the room stood, terrified, and began gathering their belongings. “Alright, Mr. Khill. We’ll be back in twenty minutes,” Mrs. Jill replied, and they all left. The hotel room door closed from the outside, leaving us alone. I felt increasingly uneasy. The look in his eyes… His cold, stern face… For some reason, he gave off a certain aura when I looked at him. Finally, he was in front of me. His body was bent over, his hands on either side of my chair. His face was right in front of mine. He grinned. He sniffed my face, his eyes closed. Then he opened them, and I froze, my eyes widening completely. Those red eyes… “Stefani, do you remember what happened that night?” he asked with that terrifying grin. The backs of his hands were growing hair, his nails were growing longer, and his teeth were bared. “W… What… are you?!”
