On the other hand, Lizzie couldn't fathom the nerve of that man. He stood there, watching her as she entered the house, his gaze penetrating and unmoving. It was only because she had to get up for a bathroom break that she became aware of his presence. After she finished, she opened the window, noticing Kate's lingering scent fading away. But what truly ignited her fury was the other scent accompanying it, a scent that made her blood boil.
Her anger surged within, compelling her to follow the trail and listen to the ongoing conversation. She was torn between a desire to confront him with her feelings or to unleash her wrath.
After leaving the café, Alicia accompanied them partway but eventually departed in the opposite direction, headed home. Lizzie continued with Kate back to her place. They walked in silence, both trying to contain the unease stirring their Lycans.
"Are you alright, Lizzie?" Pam inquired. "I know seeing your father was difficult, but your anger was so intense that I felt ready to defend against him right then and there."
"I'm sorry, Pam, I didn't intend for that," Lizzie replied. "Seeing him for the first time in ten years brought back all those painful memories—the absence, the aftermath of what happened to Mum—it all hit me at once."
"I understand, Lizzie. But you really need to share the rest with Kate. She doesn't know everything that happened a few months ago," Pam gently reminded her as Lizzie's memories cascaded back.
"We will, but I need sleep first; I feel like my body will give out if I don't rest," Lizzie confessed, letting out a small laugh as Pam joined in. "You're always tired," Pam quipped.
As they approached the house, Lizzie and Kate slipped off their shoes and sank into the couch, sitting quietly for a while.
"Lizzie, can I ask you something?" Kate asked, suddenly turning towards her.
"What is it, Kate? I'm exhausted," Lizzie replied with a slight whine in her voice.
"When I called you back here, were you being chased again?" Kate inquired, concern etching her voice.
Lizzie glanced at her hands and nodded thoughtfully. "Yes, I remember leaving Tom behind and only making it a short distance before they tracked me down. Pam managed to mask my scent, and we ended up hiding in a tree for hours until it was safe. I can't shake the feeling that someone is tipping them off or tracking me," she sighed heavily.
Curious, she asked, "Why did you bring it up?"
Kate met her gaze and replied, "I figured you might not open up about your father if I directly asked about your feelings. Also, Tom contacted me to check if you arrived safely. He shared some details with me, and he wanted me to let you know that Ellie misses you."
A smile flickered across Lizzie's face as she thought of Ellie. She missed her terribly. Leaving Ellie behind was a difficult decision, but it was necessary to ensure her safety amidst the hunters' threats. Todd could keep her protected with the others.
Without saying more, Lizzie felt a wave of fatigue wash over her, making it hard to process her tangled emotions.
Kate sighed softly. "We could discuss your alpha mate, Drake. He's quite the sweet guy, not to mention really attractive," she added with a teasing smirk.
"No way, that's not happening. I refuse to take him as a mate," Lizzie replied firmly. Inside her, Pam stirred at the sound of their mate's name. Lizzie knew Pam desired him, yet there were many reasons she couldn't accept a mate, some of which Pam understood while others remained unspoken.
Silence enveloped them once more, but a nagging thought persisted in Lizzie's mind. During their hiding in the tree, she had overheard a question from a hunter below, something only a member of this pack would know.
"Did you know Gregory chose his mate over Mum?" Lizzie asked Kate, needing answers.
Kate's expression shifted to shock. "What do you mean? How do you know that?" she asked, her voice trembling.
So it was true. Rage rose within Lizzie as Pam's energy surged through her. "How did you figure this out?" Kate pressed, visibly shaken.
Lizzie explained, "I overheard two hunters who followed me. They were discussing it over the phone with someone. I also found a letter Mum had written to me, where she explained how Gregory picked his mate over her. She wanted me to find him and make peace."
"Where did you find the letter? I thought..." Kate began, but Lizzie interrupted her, "I saw you hand it to Tom before he left with me. One night while he was asleep, I read its contents," she admitted. "You should have given me the letter directly. Why did you withhold it from me?"
Kate's eyes met Lizzie's with a solemn expression. "I intended to give it to you, but we were constantly on the move, and you were already handling so much. I didn't want to add to your burdens," she explained, sounding defeated as the weight of her intentions to protect Lizzie was finally revealed. Tom, Alicia, Ellie, and Kate were the only family Lizzie had left.
Suddenly, Lizzie felt the profound grief radiating from Kate, as she softly added, "I miss her every day. You remind me so much of her." The shared grief for Lizzie's mother washed over them both; Kate had lost a sister, and Lizzie had lost her mother. They were inseparable before her passing.
Kate looked at Lizzie with empathy. "You shouldn't have to face all this; you've endured so much more than most with the hunters pursuing you, not to mention what Melvin did to you," she said. Lizzie shivered at the mention of that name.
"I don't want to think about him," Lizzie said abruptly. Pam remained unaware of Melvin; Lizzie had kept those memories locked away even from Pam, who was still slumbering.
Kate studied her thoughtfully. "Pam doesn't know, does she?" Lizzie shook her head. "No. I'll tell her when I'm ready. I've blocked her out whenever those thoughts surfaced."
"How much does she know?" Kate pressed.
Lizzie sighed, looking down at her hands. "She doesn't know a lot since she awoke from slumber. Although Pam helped me twice during her dormancy, we don't get our Lycans until our teenage years. They surface early, but after our first shift, they go dormant until we're sixteen," Lizzie explained, and Kate nodded in agreement.
"I remember Glam only appearing during my initial shift at nine, then vanishing for several years until I was sixteen," Kate recalled.
"She returned after what he did to you, didn't she?" Kate asked gently. Lizzie's eyes filled with tears. "Can we stop talking about this now? Please?" she pleaded, needing to end the painful conversation.
Kate pulled her into a comforting embrace. "I know it still hurts; he was a monster. It's only between Tom, you, and me. Alicia doesn't even know," she assured Lizzie.
Lizzie leaned into her embrace, allowing her tears to flow freely, some soaking into Kate's shoulder.
"You need to get some rest," Kate suggested after a while, kissing Lizzie's forehead just like she used to when Lizzie was a child.
"Please don't wake me tomorrow; I need to wake naturally," Lizzie requested.
Kate chuckled softly. "I won't wake you until after 3 pm unless you sleep like the dead," she assured her.
Lizzie managed a small smile. "Goodnight, Kate."
"Goodnight, Lizzie," Kate replied, watching as she rose from the couch and made her way to her room. Lizzie climbed into bed after a quick stop at the bathroom. Sleep took her swiftly as soon as her head hit the pillow.
