Seven hundred men in more than twenty-four voyages had traveled from France to Dover aboard the Henrietta. It felt like so many, and yet so few. The once-shiny decks of the Henrietta were now covered in sand, dirt, and blood. The cabin walls were lined with punctures from machine-g*n fire. During the day, the light had cut through the bullet holes, leaving shining paths through the dark cabin interiors.
