Elizabeth, with Hetty’s assistance, pooled everyone’s ration books and purchased as much food as they could from the shops where they were registered and then packed Hetty’s Morris Eight with their luggage.
Jarvis remained in London to keep an eye on the townhouse while they were away. Hetty, little Theodore, Elizabeth, and Isabelle all bundled up in their warmest clothes and headed out of London.
Elizabeth had told Philip the previous night when he’d telephoned her that they would be in the country through the new year. If he was able to get leave for the holidays, he and Nathan were to come stay with them.
