Chapter 11: The Heirloom Of Luna And The Voice In Darkness

1994 Words
The room remained silent. Lucas stared at the necklace in Aria's hand. The Crescent of Luna. An artifact that should not exist. An artifact believed lost for over a thousand years. Yet there it was. Glowing brightly. Very real. Very dangerous. Ethan looked from the necklace to Aria. Then back to the necklace. Then back to Aria. Finally, he sighed. "I miss the days when our biggest problem was Damon." No one laughed. The situation had become far too serious. Aria slowly stood. The silver light around her began fading. "What is it?" Lucas approached carefully. "The Crescent of Luna." Aria frowned. "I gathered that part." Ethan snorted. Lucas ignored him. "It belonged to the rulers of the House of Luna." Aria looked down at the necklace. The crescent moon pendant now rested quietly in her palm. No glow. No symbols. Nothing unusual. It seemed impossible that such a small object could cause so much concern. "Why did it react to me?" Magnus entered the room at that moment. His eyes immediately widened when he saw the necklace. "The goddess protect us." The elder looked ready to faint. "That's not reassuring," Ethan muttered. Magnus approached cautiously. "The heirloom only responds to members of the royal bloodline." The words hung heavily in the air. Aria swallowed. "So the prophecy is true." Nobody answered. Because the evidence was becoming impossible to ignore. The necklace. The visions. The Moon Grove. Everything pointed toward the same conclusion. Aria was connected to the lost House of Luna. The question was why. And how. A sudden horn blast echoed across the palace. Everyone froze. Another horn followed. Then another. Lucas immediately turned toward the window. "Scouts." Ethan moved beside him. Something was wrong. Very wrong. A moment later, a guard burst into the room. "Alpha!" Lucas's expression hardened. "Report." "The Crimson Claw army is moving." The room became deathly silent. "How many?" "All of them." Ethan cursed. Magnus closed his eyes. Aria felt her stomach tighten. Damon was finally making his move. --- Outside Silvercrest... Thousands of warriors marched beneath crimson banners. Armor gleamed beneath the moonlight. Weapons reflected the glow of countless torches. At their head rode Alpha Damon. A cruel smile rested on his face. One of his commanders approached. "The heirloom has awakened." Damon nodded. "As expected." The commander hesitated. "Should we attack immediately?" The Alpha looked toward the distant walls of Silvercrest. His crimson eyes glowed. "No." The answer surprised the commander. "No?" Damon laughed softly. "Warriors aren't the greatest threat inside that kingdom." The commander frowned. "What do you mean?" Damon's smile widened. "Something else is waking." The wind howled around them. For a brief moment, genuine concern appeared in his eyes. Then it disappeared. "The Shadow King." --- Meanwhile... Lucas stood atop the eastern wall. The kingdom stretched behind him. His warriors assembled below. Thousands of soldiers prepared for battle. The citizens had already been moved to safer districts. Every possible precaution had been taken. Yet unease remained. Because Lucas knew something. The greatest danger wasn't Damon's army. It was the unknown force beneath the palace. Ethan joined him. "You think he'll attack?" Lucas nodded. "Eventually." "And the seal?" Lucas remained silent. The answer was obvious. Neither problem could be ignored. Neither problem could be solved easily. A movement below caught his attention. Aria approached the wall. Clara walked beside her. The moment Lucas saw her, his wolf stirred. Again. The feeling irritated him. His wolf never behaved this way. Never. Yet whenever Aria appeared, his instincts became restless. Protective. Alert. Almost possessive. Lucas hated not understanding something. And he definitely didn't understand that. --- Aria climbed the final staircase. The sight that greeted her stole her breath. The entire eastern horizon glowed red. Thousands of enemy campfires burned beyond the border. The scale of the army was overwhelming. "They're really here." Clara nodded sadly. "Yes." For several moments, Aria watched silently. Then her gaze shifted toward Lucas. The Alpha stood near the edge of the wall. Moonlight illuminated his dark hair. The wind tugged at his cloak. From a distance, he looked every bit the powerful ruler described in stories. Strong. Fearless. Unbreakable. Yet Aria had begun noticing the moments others missed. The exhaustion hidden behind his eyes. The weight he carried. The responsibility. Being Supreme Alpha wasn't simply about power. It was about sacrifice. The realization made her chest tighten. As though she suddenly understood him a little better. Lucas sensed her gaze. He turned. Their eyes met. Neither looked away immediately. For a brief moment, the noise around them seemed to fade. The soldiers. The war. The danger. Everything disappeared. Leaving only the two of them. Then a violent tremor shook the kingdom. The ground cracked. Warriors stumbled. Citizens screamed. A deafening roar echoed from beneath Silvercrest. Not from outside. From below. Everyone froze. Fear spread instantly. Because the sound was unlike anything they had ever heard before. Ancient. Monstrous. Wrong. Magnus appeared at the top of the stairs. His face was completely pale. "The seal!" Lucas immediately turned. Another roar echoed through the earth. Louder this time. Closer. The elder's voice trembled. "The Shadow King knows she's here." Every person on the wall fell silent. Aria's blood turned cold. Because deep inside her mind... A voice suddenly whispered. Not the queen's voice. Not her mother's. Something darker. Something hungry. At last... The voice echoed through her thoughts. I have found you. And for the first time, Aria truly felt afraid. At last... I have found you. The voice echoed through Aria's mind like a cold whisper carried by the wind. Her breath caught. The world around her seemed to fade. The warriors. The walls. The approaching army. Everything became distant. For a brief moment, she felt as though she were falling into an endless darkness. "Aria!" A familiar voice broke through the haze. Strong hands caught her shoulders. Lucas. His silver eyes searched her face. Concern flickered within them. The voice vanished instantly. Aria blinked. The world returned. The wall beneath her feet stopped spinning. "Aria." Lucas's voice was firm. "What happened?" She struggled to answer. The whisper still lingered in her ears. "I heard something." Magnus's expression immediately darkened. "What did it say?" Aria hesitated. Then repeated the words. "'At last. I have found you.'" The elder's face lost all color. Several nearby warriors exchanged uneasy glances. Lucas noticed every reaction. None of them were good. Magnus lowered his voice. "The Shadow King." A chill swept through the group. Even Ethan looked unusually serious. "You think it was him?" Magnus nodded slowly. "If the seal is weakening, then communication may already be possible." Aria's stomach tightened. Communication. That meant whatever was imprisoned beneath the kingdom was no longer sleeping. It was aware. Aware of her. The thought was terrifying. Lucas immediately made a decision. "Increase her protection." Aria frowned. "I'm standing right here." "I know." "Then stop talking about me like I'm a royal artifact." To Ethan's surprise, Lucas almost smiled. Almost. The Alpha looked toward the guards. "Double the watch around her quarters." The guards nodded. "Yes, Alpha." Aria crossed her arms. "I don't need babysitters." Lucas raised an eyebrow. "Yesterday, you accidentally discovered a secret council meeting." "That happened once." "You also ignored my order to stay inside the palace." Aria looked away. "Twice." Ethan coughed to hide a laugh. Magnus rubbed his forehead. The end of the world was approaching, and somehow these two were arguing. --- Later that evening... The palace dining hall was unusually crowded. Commanders gathered around long tables. Messengers came and went. Servants moved constantly. Preparations for war continued. Aria sat beside Clara. Her appetite had finally returned. Unfortunately, peace remained impossible. Every few minutes someone glanced toward her. Whispered. Looked away. The rumors had spread. Moon Heir. The words seemed to follow her everywhere. Aria pushed her food around her plate. Clara noticed immediately. "You should eat." "I'm trying." The healer smiled gently. "You've survived worse than gossip." Aria hoped so. Across the room, Lucas sat with several commanders. Maps covered the table before him. Yet every so often, his gaze drifted toward Aria. Not often enough to be obvious. But enough. Ethan noticed. Of course he did. The Beta noticed everything. A grin appeared on his face. Dangerous. Lucas recognized it immediately. "What?" Ethan leaned back. "Nothing." Lucas narrowed his eyes. That answer was never good. Ethan's grin widened. "You're watching her." The Alpha returned his attention to the map. "No." "You're doing it right now." Lucas ignored him. The commanders wisely pretended not to hear. One did not survive palace politics by involving themselves in Ethan's nonsense. The Beta sighed dramatically. "It's fascinating." "What is?" "You." Lucas regretted asking immediately. Ethan continued. "For years you've scared every noblewoman in the kingdom." Several commanders coughed. One nearly choked. Lucas stared at his friend. "Ethan." "Yet now you keep staring at a girl who argues with you." The commander's cough became worse. Someone quietly left the table. Lucas considered throwing Ethan off the palace wall. The idea was surprisingly appealing. --- That night... Sleep once again refused to come. Aria sat beside her window. The Crescent of Luna rested around her neck. The pendant glowed faintly beneath the moonlight. Not enough to illuminate the room. Just enough to remind her it existed. Her fingers brushed against it. Questions filled her mind. Who was her mother? What was the House of Luna? Why did Damon want her? And most importantly... What exactly was the Shadow King? A knock interrupted her thoughts. Before she could respond, the door opened. Lucas stepped inside. Aria blinked. Twice. Because seeing the Supreme Alpha standing in her room after midnight was becoming strangely common. "Do you ever sleep?" The question slipped out before she could stop it. Lucas looked mildly offended. "Occasionally." Aria laughed softly. The Alpha stepped closer. His gaze settled on the pendant. "It's beautiful." The words surprised her. For some reason, she had never imagined Lucas complimenting jewelry. Or anything, really. A faint smile touched her lips. "Thank you." Silence settled between them. Not uncomfortable. Just quiet. Outside, the moon shone brightly over Silvercrest. Aria looked toward the window. "Do you ever wish things were simpler?" Lucas considered the question. Then nodded. "Sometimes." The answer surprised her. "You do?" "I'm still human." "Werewolf." Lucas raised an eyebrow. "Technically." For a brief moment, they both smiled. Then the expression faded. Reality returned. War. Prophecy. The Shadow King. All waiting beyond the fragile peace of the moment. Lucas's gaze shifted toward the moonlit sky. "When I became Alpha, I thought strength could solve everything." Aria listened quietly. "I was wrong." His voice was softer than usual. More honest. "There are some battles you can't win with claws and strength." The confession surprised her. It felt personal. Real. Aria looked at him carefully. For the first time, she realized how lonely he must be. Everyone relied on him. Everyone expected him to have answers. Yet who carried his burdens? Who listened when he was afraid? The thought stirred something inside her chest. Something warm. Something dangerous. Before either of them could say another word— The Crescent of Luna suddenly blazed with silver light. The room erupted with energy. Ancient symbols appeared across the walls. Lucas immediately moved in front of Aria. Protective. Instinctive. The light intensified. A powerful gust of wind filled the chamber. And then— A doorway appeared. Not a normal doorway. A doorway made entirely of silver light. Aria stared in shock. Lucas's eyes narrowed. The portal shimmered before them. Ancient. Beautiful. Impossible. Then a voice echoed from within. The same voice Aria had heard before. Her mother's. "The time has come." The portal brightened. "The path to the Heart of Luna has opened." The room fell silent. Aria and Lucas exchanged a look. Neither knew exactly what awaited beyond that doorway. But both understood one thing. Their journey was about to begin.
