Chapter 8: A Kingdom On The Brink

1003 Words
The tremor lasted only a few seconds. Yet when it ended, nobody in the Hidden Archives moved. Books lay scattered across the floor. Dust drifted through the air. The silver symbols carved into the walls continued glowing faintly before slowly fading. A heavy silence settled over the chamber. Aria's heart pounded in her chest. She had felt it. Not just the shaking. Something else. Something ancient. Something alive. Elder Magnus looked pale. His usually calm expression had completely disappeared. "The seal..." he whispered. "No." Lucas's voice cut through the silence. The elder turned toward him. "The Shadow Seal is weakening." Magnus nodded grimly. "I'm afraid it is." Aria looked between them. Nobody seemed eager to explain. Again. A flash of irritation crossed her face. She was becoming tired of half-truths. Before she could speak, Lucas addressed the guards. "Escort the elders to safety." The guards immediately obeyed. "What about the archives?" Ethan asked. Lucas glanced around. "We'll return later." His attention shifted to Aria. "Come with me." Aria opened her mouth. Then closed it. Arguing seemed pointless. The Alpha was already walking away. --- The palace had transformed. Servants hurried through the corridors carrying supplies. Warriors moved in organized formations. Messengers ran between departments. The atmosphere felt completely different from the day before. War. The word lingered in everyone's thoughts. Aria followed Lucas and Ethan through the bustling hallways. For the first time, she truly understood the weight Lucas carried. Thousands of lives depended upon him. Every decision mattered. Every mistake could cost lives. As they entered a large command chamber, several officers immediately stood. The room contained a massive map of Silvercrest. Wooden markers covered its surface. Lucas moved directly to the table. "Report." A gray-haired commander stepped forward. "The eastern gates have been reinforced." Another officer spoke. "Additional patrols have been deployed." "Aerial scouts?" "Already monitoring enemy movement." Lucas nodded. His focus never wavered. Aria watched quietly from the corner. This was different from the man she had met in the throne room. Different from the cold Alpha who questioned her. Here, he looked completely at home. Confident. Focused. Strong. The soldiers listened to every word he spoke. Not because they feared him. Because they trusted him. That realization surprised her. Very few people willingly followed a tyrant. Yet these warriors seemed willing to follow Lucas anywhere. Ethan noticed her watching. A small smile appeared on his face. "Different from the stories?" Aria glanced at him. "What do you mean?" "The stories people tell about him." She looked toward Lucas. "He doesn't seem like a monster." Ethan chuckled. "Don't tell him that." "Why?" "He enjoys his reputation." Aria laughed before she could stop herself. The sound drew attention. Lucas looked up. Their eyes met. For a brief moment, nobody spoke. Then Lucas returned to the discussion. Yet Aria noticed something strange. The corner of Ethan's mouth twitched. Almost as if he had witnessed something amusing. --- Several hours later... The command meeting finally ended. One by one, the officers departed. Soon only Lucas, Ethan, and Aria remained. Ethan stretched. "I haven't sat down all day." Lucas ignored him. Ethan sighed dramatically. "One day I'll be appreciated." "Unlikely." The Beta placed a hand over his heart. "You wound me." Aria struggled not to smile. The friendship between the two men felt genuine. Comfortable. A rare thing inside a palace. Ethan eventually excused himself. "I'll check the western defenses." Lucas nodded. The moment the Beta left, silence returned. Aria shifted awkwardly. For some reason, being alone with Lucas always felt different. More intense. The Alpha studied the map. His expression remained serious. "You should rest." Aria folded her arms. "I slept three days." Lucas glanced at her. "Then eat." "I'm not hungry." "You haven't eaten since morning." Aria blinked. "How do you know that?" Lucas returned his attention to the map. "The palace staff reports everything unusual." The answer irritated her slightly. "Do they report when I breathe too?" A surprising sound escaped him. A short laugh. Very short. Yet unmistakable. Both froze. Lucas looked mildly annoyed with himself. Aria looked shocked. The ruthless Supreme Alpha laughed? The realization felt absurd. Lucas cleared his throat. "Go eat." Aria smiled despite herself. "That sounded more like a request." "It wasn't." The smile remained on her face. Something about the exchange felt normal. Unexpectedly normal. And that frightened her more than she wanted to admit. --- Later that evening... The palace walls overlooked most of Silvercrest. Aria stood upon one of the observation towers. The wind tugged at her hair. Below, warriors prepared for battle. Blacksmiths worked tirelessly. Archers inspected their weapons. Citizens carried supplies into storage buildings. Everyone had a role. Everyone contributed. The kingdom was preparing for a siege. A voice interrupted her thoughts. "You shouldn't be up here alone." Aria turned. Lucas approached from behind. Moonlight illuminated his silver eyes. For several moments neither spoke. Together they looked out across the kingdom. "It's beautiful," Aria said softly. Lucas nodded. "It is." The city lights stretched across the valley below. A peaceful sight. One worth protecting. "Are you afraid?" Aria asked. The question surprised him. "Of Damon?" "Of what's coming." Lucas considered the question. Then answered honestly. "Every leader fears losing people." Aria looked at him. The vulnerability in his voice was subtle. But it was there. A side of him few people probably saw. "You really care about this kingdom." Lucas's gaze remained fixed on the horizon. "It gave me a home." For a moment, sadness flickered across his face. Then it vanished. Aria wondered what memories haunted him. What losses shaped the man standing beside her. Before she could ask, something caught her attention. Far in the distance. Beyond the eastern hills. Tiny lights appeared. Hundreds of them. No. Thousands. Torches. An army. The Crimson Claw warriors had arrived. The realization hit both of them instantly. Lucas's expression hardened. The brief moment of peace disappeared. War had reached Silvercrest. And from the darkness beyond the hills, the enemy had finally come.
