Chapter 5: The Alpha's Decision

959 Words
The room fell into stunned silence. Aria could hear nothing except the pounding of her own heart. Alpha Damon wanted her? How was that possible? She didn't even know who she was. Lucas's jaw tightened as he stared at the crumpled letter in his hand. The silver glow in his eyes had become dangerous. Aria remembered the stories she had heard. The stories about the ruthless Supreme Alpha. For the first time, she believed every word. "What exactly did the letter say?" Ethan asked. Lucas slowly unfolded the paper. His voice was cold as he read aloud. "'The maiden found within the Moon Grove belongs to the Crimson Claw Pack. Return her immediately, and no blood will be shed. Refuse, and I will personally lead my warriors to your gates.'" A low growl escaped several warriors in the room. The threat was obvious. Alpha Damon was challenging the authority of the Supreme Alpha. Magnus looked troubled. "That fool." Ethan folded his arms. "He wouldn't gather thousands of warriors unless he believed he had a chance." Lucas's expression darkened. "Or unless he knows something we don't." The possibility unsettled everyone. Aria remained frozen. Every conversation seemed to revolve around her. Yet she had no answers to give. "I don't know him," she said suddenly. The room turned toward her. "I swear I don't." Lucas studied her face. He sensed no lie. Only fear and confusion. Aria clenched her fists. "If I belong to his pack, why can't I remember him?" Nobody answered. Because nobody knew. Lucas stepped toward the window overlooking the kingdom. Rain lashed against the glass. Lightning illuminated the dark sky. His mind was already calculating possibilities. War. Politics. The prophecy. And now Damon. None of it could be coincidence. The question was how the pieces connected. Behind him, Magnus spoke quietly. "There is another possibility." Lucas glanced back. The elder hesitated. Then spoke the words everyone feared. "What if Damon knows who she truly is?" The room became silent. Even Aria felt a chill. Lucas looked at her. For the first time, he wondered if her memory loss was natural. Or if someone had taken her memories. The thought was unsettling. Very unsettling. A knock interrupted the discussion. Another guard entered. He bowed deeply. "Alpha." "What is it?" "The eastern scouts have returned." Lucas immediately straightened. "Report." "The Crimson Claw army continues moving toward Silvercrest." Ethan frowned. "How far?" "Three days." The answer hit the room like a hammer. Three days. That was all the time they had. Lucas's decision came instantly. "Double the border patrols." "Yes, Alpha." "Increase palace security." "Yes, Alpha." "No one enters or leaves without my approval." The guard bowed and departed. Ethan watched his friend carefully. "You've made your choice." Lucas's silver eyes hardened. "I have." Aria looked at him. "What choice?" The Alpha turned toward her. His voice carried the weight of absolute authority. "I will not hand you over." The words stunned her. "Why?" Lucas stared at her. For several seconds, he remained silent. The logical answer was simple. Because Damon had threatened him. Because surrendering her would make him appear weak. Because a Supreme Alpha never bowed to intimidation. Yet none of those reasons felt complete. Something about her continued to bother him. To intrigue him. To make his wolf restless. And Lucas hated things he couldn't explain. "Because until I know the truth," he said finally, "you remain under my protection." Aria felt something strange stir inside her chest. Relief. Warmth. Safety. Feelings she barely understood. Before she could respond, Ethan cleared his throat dramatically. "That sounded surprisingly noble." Lucas shot him a warning look. Ethan grinned. Magnus rolled his eyes. The tension eased slightly. Only slightly. Because everyone knew difficult days were coming. --- Later that night... The palace corridors were quiet once more. Most of the kingdom slept. But Alpha Lucas remained awake. He stood alone on a balcony overlooking Silvercrest. The rain had finally stopped. Clouds drifted across the moon. His wolf remained unusually restless. The feeling irritated him. For years, he had maintained complete control. Now, ever since the girl's arrival, his instincts felt unsettled. Footsteps approached. Ethan emerged from the shadows. "You should sleep." Lucas didn't look at him. "You should mind your own business." Ethan laughed. "You know that's impossible." The two friends stood in silence for a moment. Then Ethan spoke again. "You don't think she's dangerous." It wasn't a question. Lucas remained quiet. "No." The answer surprised even him. Aria was hiding something. That much was obvious. But dangerous? No. At least, not intentionally. Ethan nodded. "I agree." Lucas finally looked at him. "Then why do I feel like a storm is coming?" Ethan's expression became serious. "Because one is." The Beta glanced toward the distant eastern horizon. Toward the approaching army. Toward Alpha Damon. And perhaps toward something even worse. Neither man noticed the silver light briefly flashing beneath the palace grounds. Deep underground. Inside an ancient chamber. The symbol had begun to change. Ancient markings spread across the stone floor like veins of moonlight. At the center stood a pedestal untouched for centuries. Something rested upon it. A crystal. It glowed brighter with each passing hour. As though responding to Aria's presence. As though awakening from a very long sleep. And far away, beyond the eastern mountains, a pair of crimson eyes opened in the darkness. Alpha Damon stood upon a cliff overlooking his army. Thousands of warriors waited below. Their torches illuminated the night. A cruel smile spread across his face. "At last." The wind howled around him. His gaze shifted toward Silvercrest. Toward the kingdom of the Supreme Alpha. Toward the mysterious girl. "The Moon Heir has returned." And this time... No one would stop him.
