The Mask

Gala . The city glittered brightly beneath her as she prepared for the assignment. The dossier lay open on the table papers scattered around, Kaelen Drax’s face staring back at her. Her fiancé. Her target. She slipped the mask over her face—a sleek, black veneer that erased her features, leaving only shadow. It was more than disguise; it was her armor. Without it, he might recognize her. Without it, she might recognize herself. The gala was alive with music and laughter filling the hall, chandeliers spilling light across the polished marble floors. Kaelen moved through the crowd, his presence was like a man who owned it, his smile sharp and seductive, his presence magnetic and intriguing. Liora watched from above, hidden in the rafters. Every movement was calculated, every breath measured. Yet beneath the mask, her heart pounded with a rhythm she could not silence. She muttered to herself,"Emotions are a hassle." as she monitored Kaelen's presence in the gala. She remembered the ring pressed into her palm, her father’s decree, the storm that followed. And now, here he was—alive, powerful, untouchable. She descended into the crowd gracefully her black glittering ball gown matching the colour of her mask concealing her identity. The assassin in her moved with precision, but the bride she once was meant to be trembled beneath the surface. Kaelen’s eyes swept the room, sharp and searching for something. For a moment, his striking blue eyes lingered on her. She froze, her breath caught, certain if he could see through the mask she wore. But he turned away, laughing with his allies, oblivious to the shadow stalking him. Her orders were clear: eliminate him. But the paper from the man in the shadows burned in her pocket: The marriage is the key. Was killing him obedience—or betrayal? Was sparing him weakness—or truth? Her weapon felt heavy like lead in her hand. She raised it, the crowd oblivious to the dangers around, the mask hiding her raging emotions within her. Kaelen turned, his gaze sweeping the room again. For a heartbeat, their eyes met. He did not know her. He could not. Yet something flickered in his expression—a hesitation, a recognition buried deep as if he knew she would be there. She lowered the weapon, her breath ragged rapidly. The assassin demanded obedience. The bride demanded answers. Her mind was splitting with two conflicted sides threatening to consume her. The mask hid her face, but it could not hide her heart. Kaelen Drax was more than a target. He was the key to everything. And the choice she made tonight would decide whether she remained shadow—or reclaimed the girl she had been.
