Sam reached into the fridge and grabbed the bottle of wine from the door. She strained on her tippy toes to reach the glasses. “I really should have moved them while Jake was gone” she mused aloud. She smiled to herself wistfully. “Not that it matters anymore.” She sat down on the couch, turned on her movie and dug into her potpie. Sam watched Audrey Hepburn and Fred Astaire dance across the screen, and tried to ignore the sounds coming through the thin walls. She grabbed her dishes and walked back into the kitchen, stopping when she noticed the paint chipping on the door frame. She sighed and started her dishes; sipping her wine and humming Funny Face. Sam danced to the bathroom, she turned the knob and let the hot water flow into the tub. She lit the candles, hit the play button on the stereo, then reached into the medicine cabinet. She grabbed a handful of Jake’s pills from after his last deployment threw them back and washed them down with a swig of wine. She felt a shiver go down her spine. Sam felt her robe slip down and land gently on her feet. She slid into the tub, already feeling drowsy. Sam listened to Otis Redding croon and let her mind float to her own dock. Her petite frame eased under the water. She felt the comforting warmth and the darkness envelop her.
