Adrian's eyes went red. This time, he was the one unraveling. Bitterness welled inside Vivian. She no longer expected him to understand how she felt. She watched his arms fall to his sides and his head drop, like a puppet with its strings cut, as though all the life had gone out of him. Vivian turned away without mercy. Behind her, Diane was still shouting insults. Vivian closed the bedroom door, shutting out all the noise outside. Diane kept hurling insults until she finally broke down crying.
