Steve sat at a computer in one of the little half cubicles in the library. Patients occupied all twenty of the computers, and all around the library, more patients milled about, looking at books, waiting for their turn at the keyboard. Each patient who had graduated to that level had the privilege of twenty minutes a week of computer time on Sunday afternoons. He could hear the clacking of keyboard keys from the woman next to him and the murmuring of a conversation from some patients waiting for their turn. He looked at the timer on the computer. He had about ten minutes left. He read back through the email one more time before hitting “send.” Harmony: It was good to hear from you. I’m glad the Christmas album is in the can.
