CHAPTER NINE: PROXIMITY

BENEATH HIS SHADOW --- The headquarters had never felt so alive. Every corridor, every glass pane, every shadow seemed to hum in rhythm with Lydia’s pulse. She had spent the day learning to control her partial shifts, Helena silently observing, while the Alpha never left her side. It was not just guidance. It was presence — the kind that made her every nerve fire at once. Every brush of his sleeve, every glance, carried a magnetic charge she could neither ignore nor resist. He had called it “training.” She called it torture. --- They were alone in the training room, dim light reflecting off polished steel and mats. “You’ve improved,” he said quietly, watching her. His eyes were gold flecked with silver, impossibly sharp. “Faster. More precise. But still… distracted.” “I’m not distracted,” she said, though her lips betrayed her. “I’m focused.” “Focus,” he murmured, stepping closer, “requires sacrifice.” The air between them seemed to compress. She felt his heat radiate against her arm as he adjusted her stance for a defensive strike. “Breathe,” he whispered in her ear. The word, simple as it was, made her stomach flip. Her pulse hammered in her chest as she inhaled, but it was not fear. Not entirely. It was something else — a mix of longing, danger, and exhilaration. “Your heartbeat,” he murmured, voice low, almost a growl, “is irregular. Faster than it should be. Why?” “I…” she faltered. She could not answer. He closed the distance, so close that his presence enveloped her. The space between them was electric, the tension palpable. His hand brushed hers lightly — nothing, and everything at the same time. “Control,” he said softly. “Control is everything.” She shivered. Not from cold. Not just from the brush of his fingers. Something ancient, instinctual, and magnetic coursed through her. Her silver veins pulsed, energy responding to him, to proximity, to the force of his presence. “I don’t think I can,” she whispered. “Then you will learn,” he said, leaning just enough that their breaths mingled. “I will teach you.” Her skin tingled where he was close. Her senses flared. She could feel his heartbeat, the warmth of his breath, the subtle movement of his muscles. She had never felt so exposed, so seen. And yet, she did not recoil. Instead, she leaned in, almost unconsciously. Almost testing him. Almost… hungry for the closeness that set her body alight. He noticed. His hand hovered, almost touching her arm, and she caught the faintest smile on his lips. Not dominance. Not desire. Something… acknowledgment. Recognition. The Alpha stepped back slightly, letting the tension linger. “Do not mistake proximity for weakness,” he said quietly, eyes locked on hers. “I’m not weak,” she whispered. “No,” he murmured, “but you are… dangerously close to losing control.” She shivered again, and this time it was from pure electricity, a magnetic pull neither could ignore. “Then teach me,” she said, voice low. He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he circled her slowly, close enough that every movement was deliberate, every step calculated. Her pulse raced. Her senses screamed. She could feel the heat radiating off him, feel it coiling in her chest like a storm barely contained. “You must understand,” he said finally, his voice soft but commanding, “that control is not only about power. It is about… patience. Awareness. Connection. Your power responds to emotion. To instinct. To will. And right now… your will is distracted.” She looked at him, her silver-tinged veins glowing faintly in the dim light. She couldn’t stop staring at him. She couldn’t stop feeling him. Every inch of her body hummed in response to his nearness. “Do you feel it?” he asked. “Yes,” she breathed. He leaned in slightly, close enough that his lips almost brushed her temple. Her body reacted before her mind could. Her pulse thundered. She could feel the force between them — power, danger, and something… impossible. “That’s your instinct,” he whispered, voice low, warm, vibrating against her skin. “It’s alive. And it’s mine to guide.” Her breath caught. Her senses flared. And for the first time, Lydia Ashford realized: she had never been this close to anyone, not like this, not ever. And the Alpha… the Alpha had never been this near to anyone like her. Not just a teacher. Not just a protector. Something else entirely. Something magnetic, dangerous, and inevitable. And for the first time, she wanted to surrender — not to him, not fully, but to the storm that was them, together, together in proximity, in tension, in instinct. The room seemed to pulse with energy, silver veins across her arms, gold and silver eyes watching her every move. And she realized: this was only the beginning. The danger wasn’t outside the building. It was between them. ---
