The Duke's Daughter, an Ordinary Day at School

1005 Words
The carriage arrived at the school's rotary, and Cain was the first to disembark. He then smiled and politely extended his hand to Irene, saying, "Please, go ahead." Seeing his face, Irene's eyes widened. "When did you start wearing glasses?" The demon, now wearing thin-rimmed glasses, smiled. "To avoid attracting attention." Irene sighed. This demon was simply too beautiful. His jet-black hair, alluring red eyes, and handsome features exuded immense charm. Even though Irene knew he was a demon, she couldn't help but be mesmerized. Having such a butler would undoubtedly make her the center of attention. (With such striking looks, wearing glasses doesn't make much of a difference. But maybe it's a little better.) Supported by his strong hand, Irene stepped out of the carriage and, surprisingly, noticed that no one was looking at her. Puzzled, she looked up to see the demon smiling and adjusting his glasses. "Impressive, right? I had these made by elves." "Elves?" "Yes. Let's go. This is my first time here, so you'll have to show me around." "Y-Yes." Irene raised her chin proudly. "Alright, let's go. Follow me." She began walking towards the classroom. As she walked through the corridors, lower-ranking nobles associated with the Brighton Duchy approached to greet her. "Good morning, Miss Irene." "Hello, Miss Irene." Irene merely glanced at them and continued walking silently. Other students looked at her with curiosity, whispering among themselves. (They're definitely gossiping about me.) The prince had taken another woman abroad for his studies instead of his fiancée. It was bound to cause a lot of rumors. Irene clenched her fists, raised her chin, straightened her back, and moved forward. Once in the classroom, she instructed Cain to stand at the back and began attending her lessons. (During class, I don't have to worry about others' gazes, which is nice.) She let out a deep sigh. (…What should I do about that demon?) Reflecting on it in the morning, "Wanting to deal with my fiancé's affair partner" was definitely not something you would summon a demon for. She had impulsively done it last night, driven by various thoughts and emotions. She wanted him to leave, but that probably wasn't possible. She deeply regretted summoning a demon. (For now, I'll have to pretend and find a way to send him back.) The Brighton Duchy had a hidden underground room only Irene knew about. When she was a child, she had accidentally seen her grandfather enter it and had first gone in herself two years ago. It was like a study, with walls lined with old books, and there was a manual on how to summon demons. (Most of the books there are about demons. If I look there, I might find something.) Thinking about this, she took notes from the blackboard. When lunchtime arrived, she went to the cafeteria with Cain. The demon seemed to enjoy the classes, saying he was happy to have filled in a 300-year gap. She nodded in response, though the idea of 300 years was terrifying to her. Upon arriving at the cafeteria, Cain asked quietly, "I noticed in the classroom that not everyone has a butler or maid with them." "Yes, only the higher-ranking nobles do. In this school, there are fewer than five." "I see." "Higher-ranking nobles have privileges, but they are also expected to behave accordingly." Irene answered proudly. Upon reaching the section reserved for high-ranking nobles, Irene instructed Cain to get their meals, saying, "Tell the chef it's for the Brighton Duchy. He'll understand." "Understood." Ten minutes later, Cain returned with a tray, looking slightly puzzled. On the tray were grain soup, a small rye bread, and water. As he placed the tray down, he asked, "Is this alright?" "Yes, it's fine." "Other people seem to be eating different things." "This is a special beauty meal. Eating it makes you more beautiful." "I see. I thought it might be animal feed." "Huh? What did you say?" The demon smiled and said, "Nothing." She began eating slowly. It wasn't particularly tasty, but it filled her stomach a bit. Cain stood behind her, silently watching the other students chat happily. After finishing her afternoon classes, Irene headed to the student council room. She opened the door to find the lower-ranking nobles busy with their work. "Miss Irene, could you handle these documents?" Seeing the pile of documents, Irene sighed. Including reference materials, it was about 10 centimeters thick. (As expected, it's the work of four people…) While she was feeling overwhelmed, the demon spoke from behind, "It seems like a lot." "Yes, it's the work of four people." "Why four people?" "As I mentioned yesterday, the prince and his attendants went abroad for their studies, so their work has fallen to me." "Can't you delegate some of the work to others?" "As a high-ranking noble, I must do all of this." Hearing this, the demon frowned slightly. Irene began her work. During this time, a lower-ranking noble girl offered to help, but she ignored her. Finally, by late evening, she finished and stood up. Leaving the empty student council room, she walked through the dim, sparsely populated school building toward the carriage stop. After returning to the mansion, she immediately had dinner. Today's menu was vegetable stew, nuts, rye bread, and water. Cain stared at the meal. "Is this also a beauty meal?" "Yes." Afterward, she studied, took a bath, and had a maid apply a face mask. With all her tasks completed, she sighed, "I'm so tired today," and dozed off. Suddenly, there was a knock at the door, and Cain entered. "Miss, may I speak with you?" "Yes, what is it?" She answered sleepily, and Cain smiled, saying, "I have two things to talk about." "Two things?" "Yes, one is about your wish, and the other is about you." Irene instantly woke up. He had blended in so naturally that she had forgotten he was a demon. (That's right! What should I do?) Cain watched Irene's pale face with a seductive smile.
