THE WEIGHT OF A MISTAKE

422 Words
Aria was finishing up her shift when the announcement came over the hospital intercom: a patient in the ICU had passed away. She froze. Her heart sank — this patient was someone she had cared for closely over the past few days. The nurse in charge pulled her aside. “Aria… this wasn’t your fault,” she said softly, but Aria could hear the tension in the team. The patient had received the wrong dosage of a medication — a rare mix-up, but fatal. She left the station, trying to breathe, trying to process. How could this happen? How could someone die under her care, even if it wasn’t technically her mistake? She stepped into the hospital lobby for some air, the night cold against her cheeks. That’s when she saw Adrian. He was waiting near the entrance, his expression tighter than she had ever seen it. “Aria,” he said quietly. “I heard about what happened. Are you okay?” She shook her head, blinking back tears. “I… I don’t know. It’s just… so sudden. And it feels… avoidable.” He nodded, walking closer. “I know. It’s not easy. This isn’t just about the hospital protocols — it’s about people’s lives, and it weighs on everyone here. I… I saw the team reviewing the patient’s chart. They’re trying to figure out exactly what went wrong.” Aria’s voice trembled. “And… what about the doctor on duty? The pharmacist?” Adrian ran a hand through his hair. “It’s complicated. There’s blame, there’s procedure… and then there’s the reality. Sometimes mistakes happen. Sometimes… people pay the price.” His gaze softened as he looked at her. “I’m here if you need to talk. Or if you just need someone to stand quietly with you.” For the first time in weeks, Aria felt the raw weight of being a nurse — the responsibility, the life-and-death consequences, and the emotional toll. But seeing Adrian there, not judging, just present, she realized she didn’t have to carry it alone. “Thank you,” she whispered, her voice breaking slightly. He nodded. “We all learn from this. And we move forward — carefully, but we move forward.” As they stood together in the quiet lobby, the city lights casting long shadows across the marble floor, Aria realized two things: the work she loved would never be easy, and Adrian — calm, steady, quietly protective — had become someone she could lean on, even in the heaviest moments.
