Chapter Eight:A Heart That Doesn't Listen

344 Words
" Her mind said this was temporary. Her heart didn’t get the memo." --- The rain had returned — soft and steady, like background music to a feeling she couldn’t name. Hailey sat in bed, notebook on her lap, but the page remained blank. Her fingers hovered above the pen, her thoughts scattered across a hundred what-ifs. She hadn’t meant to let him in. Not even a little. But now, every time she closed her eyes, she saw him — Chase, laughing in the community center, smiling across that café table, saying her name like it meant something. She nodded. “Me too.” Silence. Then Chase asked, “What happened to you, Hailey?” She flinched. “What kind of question is that?” “The kind you ask when someone looks like they’re still carrying pieces they never dropped.” She didn’t answer. Couldn’t. Instead, she whispered, “Someone left. Took more than I gave. And I haven’t wanted to give since.” Chase’s voice was soft. “What if I don’t want to take? Just… hold.” Her throat tightened. She turned to him, eyes guarded. “I’m not ready.” “I’m not asking you to be.” And in that moment, sitting by a quiet lake under a gray sky, she realized something terrifying: Her heart had already started listening to him. ---
