Chapter Three
I awake to the sound of keys unlocking the cell, the leather of my under-armour vest crinkles from under my head, my heart rate picks up. It's still dark in the cell and smells rotten, I sit up quickly and place my back against the wall so I can see what is coming. "Ah, sleeping beauty is awake." A guard wearing a leather uniform stands on the opposite side of the cell door with a set of keys in his hand, the sneer taking over his face makes me shift and push myself to my feet. His bulbous nose and squinty eyes stare intently at me, "You're coming with me to see the Doc." great, doesn't sound like I have much of a choice, I take a step forward until I'm blocked by Alex standing in front of me. "You are not taking her anywhere, mongrel." I place my hands on his back in silent comfort, his muscles bunch at the contact and then I try to walk around him, but he matches my steps with his own. His back is strung as tight as a bow, the hard muscle bunched up ready to strike. "It's ok Alex, I need to know the layout," I whisper so quietly I'll be surprised if he can hear it. He slowly grabs my wrist and squeezes letting me know he heard. "Take this just in case anything happens, it needs to be one hundred feet or less and they will be able to trace the signal," I whisper again. I slowly place the tracker into his hand, I hope I'm not making a mistake, but my gut is telling me to trust in this man.
Stepping around him, he holds onto my wrist until I am near the door, I turn and look at him, and he gives me the slightest of nods. Inhaling deeply, I walk towards the guard, his eyes don't leave me as I step through the door, he grabs me by the top of my arm, twists and pushes my face into the bar, and the peeling metal scratches my cheek. Handcuffs snap around my wrists as soon as he locks the cell. "We are going to have so much fun with you princess." he leers behind me; bile rises in my throat. Gathering my courage, I stand up straight and walk as he starts to drag me with his hand wrapped around my inner elbow.
"You will leave her alone Lee! Or so help me when I get out of here you will be the first person I come for." Aragorn shouts from behind us, I look over my shoulder and see Alex and Aragorn banging into the cell doors trying to get out. The sound of their bodies slamming into the cell is deafening, I meet their eyes one by one, purple and then green. I grin and give them a wink in reassurance. Suddenly it goes quiet apart from the occasional groan coming from down the hall, I turn and face the guard, he holds a small remote in his hand and a grin overtakes his face. "What did you do?" I spit at him. He looks down at me. "What this?" he waves the remote in front of my face, "this is the controller to the collars that they are wearing it electrocutes them," he replies smugly. I look into the cells as we walk past them, urine still ripe in the air.
There is people and creatures huddled together or on their own in varying corners of the cells, there could possibly be twenty cells just here probably more. If I didn't have these handcuffs on, I would make his already bulbous nose pop like a paintball. "Just like you will be wearing one soon." I freeze as my eyes land on the only female I have come across thus far, her hair is a red, curly and beautiful. There are black circles around her eyes, most likely from lack of sleep, and her clothes are ripped in obvious places. she doesn’t meet my eyes and I instantly want to just pick her up and take her with me. Lee grabs my arm and drags me past the girl's cell.
My pulse spikes as we pass three corners a long hallway and then another corner. He pushes me through a door that leads to stairs, "go down." he says and then pushes me again. Grinding my teeth, I start to walk down the stairs with Lee my bodyguard behind me. The air grows colder the further down we go, we exit the stairway and enter an even dirtier hallway, we walk a few steps and Lee pulls me to a stop. He knocks on the metal door, hinges creak and a female answer's the door. Her black hair is in a bun that looks too tight that it must be pulling her skin back, she has a black silk blouse on under her white coat with a black pencil skirt and red high heels. Her dark brown eyes meet mine and I suddenly have the urge to kneel, whatever power she is packing, packs with a punch.
"Amira is here for you Doc." he pushes me forward I have had enough of being pushed around already by this d**k. I snatch my arm out of his hand and walk into the Doc's office with my chin held high. Pristine countertops greet me, beakers filled with varying colours cover the shelves, and a computer sits in the corner on a metal desk. Everything is spotless and sterile if only the cells were like this. My feet stop walking forward as soon as I see the contraption of a chair in the middle of the room, arm and leg restraints it's like something out of a horror movie, a shiver racks my body as I see the needles attached to the leather cuffs. "I'm Dr Emerald. Please take a seat." Gestures to the only chair in the room, her voice is quite soothing but I'm not buying any of this. "Your delusional if you think I'm willingly going to sit in that chair." I step back away from her and the torture chair, into a chest wall behind me. Lee picks me up from behind and carries me towards the chair, I kick out with my legs until I make contact and the groan he makes is satisfying, my arms are completely useless as they are still handcuffed behind my back. One second, I'm kicking and screaming and the next I'm spread-eagled to the chair.
My arms and legs strapped down by the leather straps the needles bite into my wrist and ankles. Lee leans so close to my face I smell the rotten tooth at the back of his mouth, "now sit and behave for the Doc." my head snaps forward, blood explodes from his nose. He c***s his arm back readying to hit me back as I grin like the Cheshire cat.
I wait for the pain, but it never comes, Dr Emerald has a hold of his arm. "Out!" she growls at him; green scales slide over her hand. What the f**k is she? "That Bitch......!" he starts to shout. "I said out!" Doc replies, lee walks out with his tail in between his legs, possibly going to lick his wounds. She sighs and walks over to the cabinet at the side of me, tools are littered in a metal tray next to my head. "You shouldn't have done that; he is going to make it harder for you now," she tells me quietly as if she might be overheard. I shrug, I'm already a prisoner what else can they do? f**k him he deserved it anyway.
She walks towards me and wraps the metal band around my ankle above the leather strap, "this band has properties in it that stops you from using your powers, they can be controlled by the remotes that all the guards and staff carry, if you try to remove it, it will kill you, that much I can promise." Powers? But how can I have powers when I'm mortal. What is the reason I am here? I can't be of any use to them, unless this is bigger than me and they are trying to go after the allegiant, like brainwashing or something? "I'm human," I tell her confidently. She walks over with a needle in hand the syringe full to the brim with a thick red substance, I buck trying to get away but it's no use as I'm not moving anywhere, "I don't doubt that one bit." she says and injects it in my neck until the syringe is empty. The computer on the desk beeps loudly then gets faster, I'm guessing it's my heart rate on the monitor. Fire licks through my body, the feeling of a blowtorch attacking me from the inside out, my palms grow clammy and I scream until my throat is raw, I tried to hold it in, but the pain is beyond anything have felt. My body thrashes wildly trying to get away, but from what? I can't get away from myself. My insides start to tighten up, and then I'm convulsing.
The Doc starts shouting and the door opens and shuts, it sounds like there is a stampede of people running inside my mind. My neck stings once again and my body begins to relax. Sighing I relax into the chair, I'll just close my eyes for a minute. My mind goes to that place where your are asleep but you can still hear everything around you, we had to learn a sort of similar thing in the Allegiant we had to be aware of our surroundings at all times, awake or asleep. "I think the serum is finally working." I hear Dr Emerald announce to someone her excitement clear. "On this human of all things." a male voice joins in the disgust is thick in the air.
"Why not the human? The earth is full of energy, they might just have the right blend down to their DNA. This Human is our breakthrough, it has taken us years for us to get this to work." silence greets her "Take her away, we are done for the day." my arms and legs are unstrapped and then I'm lifted over someone's shoulder in a fireman's carry, and then I fall into a deep sleep.
Hunter.
I awake from my slumber, my inner beast rattling against my chest, plainly telling me it wants to get out and do some damage. A scream punctuates the air squeezing my heart and freezing the blood in my veins. Inhaling deeply the most intoxicating smell assaults my nostrils, the scent of freshly baked cookies with a hint of temptation. I sit up disturbing the silence with metal clanking together, echoing around the room, when another haunting scream rips through the air, my heart stutters as the scream makes my ears ring. My limbs start to turn into my internal beast, “What's the matter with you?” I ask it as it tries to take over my body, anger burning through me viciously. The beast and I are one, he sends me impressions of what he knows and what he is thinking, it’s the only way we communicate, the next feeling he sends me has me floored. No, it can’t be! I won't believe it. It has been too long, this must be a coincidence, but yet the elation gives me a little, if I have to say it, Hope. My beast takes further control while I'm distracted by my thoughts, we need to find her. After all of these years in this hellhole something good came of it. I stand up and pull the chains out of the wall using my beast's strength, the collar around my neck a hindrance, scratching it absent-mindedly I look up to the grate in the ceiling a good twenty feet, on the lowest level where I currently reside, we are ‘classed’ as ‘the’ most dangerous supernatural creatures, we get thrown in here without a backward glance, we are only good for one thing. To be studied. Countless times they have rounded up the guards and attacked me with all sorts of weapons, I would be covered in scars if I didn’t heal fast. banging from the corridor has my hackles rising, the cell door bangs open and guards flood in all harnessing their weapons, their most lethal one is the remote they carry a single button that can incapacitate a normal person, but I never said I was a normal person. As they circle around me, I wrap the chains around my hands, all at once, they come at me with their varying weapons, bats, whips, guns, you name it. Growling I charge at the guards standing in front of my only exit. Bang. Bang. I look at my chest to find two tranquiliser darts sticking out of me, the numbness reaching into my limbs and zapping the energy out of them. I need to get to her; I don’t know what they are doing to her but the way my mind is conjuring up all sorts of ideas my beast’s growls intensifies.
I punch at anything that comes near me the feeling elevates me until it is followed by dread my limbs become sluggish the tranquilliser’s kicking in. I stumble to the side, No! I need to get to her. I blink and I am lying on the floor unable to move, blackness tingeing the edges of my vision. I need to get what is mine, My Mate. But this will be my secret.
