The tale of the sweet-toothed vampire
There once was a young vampire named Mikaela who lived on the outskirts of Hyakuya village. He had hair that resembled corn and gold, eyes that had the color of the ocean and a face that was kissed by heaven. But no one could manifest his beauty at all. Mikaela had lived alone in his mansion. He was a vampire after all, and all the humans did not want to be his cattle.
This had saddened Mikaela for he was always curious of the humans. He enjoyed the way humans were and how they lived. How they laughed, how they worked, how they eat fruits that would make their noses wrinkle. It all pinched the young vampire's interests. He wanted to meet them. But he knew they were scared of his kind, so he'd not dare to go out. Well, except in the evening where he would go in disguise to buy candies, chocolates, and any sugary treat you would find.
Mikaela was a sweet tooth after all. He had no thirst for blood, unlike the other vampires. Instead, he would munch on sweet things.
Candy. It was another thing that he loved from the human world. Mikaela enjoyed every sweet treat the humans would make. He thought that if he couldn't make friends with the humans, he could at least taste these delicious treats. With that, Mikaela was somehow content.
Thoughts of the human world would usually course through Mikaela's mind as he would sit on his throne and stare at the village clear through his windows.
Meanwhile, in a distance not so far away, a group of five kids similar to the vampire's age was walking around the outskirts. The group consisted of a short lavender-haired girl, a blonde girl with twin tails, a shy brunette with emerald eyes, a tall pink haired boy who always seemed pissed off at the world, and a black haired male who was always described as a moron.
"Where are we going?? I wanna go on an adventure! It's so boring!" The black haired male whined. "Shut up, Yuu. You're so damn noisy!" The pink haired one scowled at the one named Yuu. This made Yuu feel energetic. He always seemed to enjoy the exchanges he and the pink hair would have, "Don't be such a drag, Kimizuki. You know in your heart that you are really bored."
"Che," Kimizuki responded. The other three looked at Yuu and Kimizuki in curiosity. "Oi Shinoa, did you hear what Yuu said just now?"
The tiny purple haired girl stared at Kimizuki, "Hnn? Yuu-san is bored?" She stared softly at the black haired male who seemed to be restless. A devilish smile appeared on the girl's face, "Then, how about we go to the vampire's base?"
The group gasped in horror as Shinoa said those words. Yoichi, the brown hair had almost fallen to the floor out of shock. "A-are you for real Shinoa? Should we really go?" Yoichi stuttered in fear. "It could be dangerous! What would we do if the vampire got us???" The blonde named Mitsuba reacted with energy.
Kimizuki walked over to Shinoa and patted her on the shoulder, "Oi. Stop messing around, Shinoa." The petite girl slapped Kimizuki's hand off, facing him with a grin, "I'm more than serious. Unless... you're all chicken?" This made the group gasp for the nth time. Well except for the boy named Yuu. He hadn't been paying attention to his group's exchange after Shinoa had mentioned traveling to the vampire's home. The thought excited him of course.
The boy had always felt a surge of energy rushing through him whenever vampires were mentioned. It was because he had lost his family when the vampires had attacked their village. You could say that the boy had a grudge on their kind.
"Challenge accepted. Where is it at?" Kimizuki proudly announced. He wasn't the type to let anyone look down on him. Shinoa grinned with mischief. She loved how he got caught in her trap. "If you follow the path to the woods, you'll see a strange looking cave covered with snow. Strangely, the snow stays there all year round even though it is no longer winter. If you enter that cave, it will lead to the vampire's mansion."
Suddenly, Yuu had run off from the rest of his group. This all surprised them, and they called out to him to return. But alas, Yuu was ever excited to meet a bloodsucker. He was always impulsive when it came to that.
He rushed through the woods without looking back, and even though he had run many steps, the boy did not feel his energy draining. As he passed through the woods, he felt his feet slowly getting cold, and his body chilling up.
The ground had suddenly turned soft, and every step he took seemed heavier. That was when he had realized that it was snowing. He was put to a stop when the path had ended. In front of him was a tiny cave covered with snow.
Yuu grew a smile on his face for he was only a few moments away from meeting his family's murderer.
While Yuu was venturing inside the cave, the vampire named Mikaela was staring aimlessly at the large pictures framed on the walls of his home. They were portraits of the great vampires from long ago who had a nefarious history. Mikaela did not like his family. He thought that if not for them, he would be able to run around freely with the humans and buy delicious candy all the time.
He let out a sigh of despair.
"I'm thirsty," Mikaela spoke to himself. He walked to the kitchen slowly. He opened the fridge sitting peacefully beside the stove and grabbed a red juice box. He took a straw and stabbed the box, sipping red liquid.
Normally, vampires needed blood to survive, it was their life juice after all. But Mikaela was different. He never liked blood. Luckily for him, he discovered that tomato juice was a good substitute for blood. In fact, he loved it, even more, when he discovered how sweet tomatoes were compared to blood.
It kept Mikaela at peace.
As the vampire was calmly sipping his drink, he suddenly heard something he hadn't expected in a million years. The gigantic doors of his mansion had creaked open, and it wasn't caused by his own hands. It caught him wide-eyed. Mikaela found it strange that someone had decided to pay him a visit. Humans did not like vampires after all.
But the thought of someone visiting him made Mikaela feel giddy. Mikaela was on the second floor, so he rushed over to the staircase near the front door. When he got there, he made sure to hide in the shadows where the human would not notice him, but be able to see the visitor.
Mikaela's eyes grew in size as he saw the figure of his little visitor. Walking through the dark hallway was none other than the impulsive Yuu. The sight of Yuu had made Mikaela's chest pound hard. It had been so long since he had last seen a human enter his premises.
"Hello? Is anyone here?" Yuu called out as echoes followed his lead. Mikaela badly desired to return Yuu's calls, but he hesitated to speak as he did not wish to scare him. Mikaela was nervous. He was all flustered by the boy's presence that he did not notice the vase sitting behind him and knocked it down on the floor.
With a loud crash, the vase scattered into pieces. This caused Yuu to look at Mikaela's direction, "Who's there?!"
Crap, Mikaela thought. He stayed still, confused as to whether he should run away or not. "I know you're there!" Yuu scowled as he hurried up the stairs.
Mikaela swallowed as he took steps back, begging the darkness to hide him forever. Yuu was already close, slowly taking steps towards the darkness as he observed suspiciously at the area, "Come out... I know you are there. I'm not afraid of you." Yuu sounded threatening.
His voice had scared Mikaela. He had never witnessed a human act so tough in front of a vampire before. Besides, it had been years since he last came close to a human. Mikaela looked left and right to see if there were any ways he could run away to. He really was not ready for this meeting, so he decided to run away instead.
Abruptly, Mikaela ran to his left, trying to get away as fast as he could. But Yuu had other plans and chased him with energy, "Hey bloodsucker! Come back here!!!"
Yuu shouted loudly at the running Mikaela.
The name bloodsucker had always made Mikaela cringed. He never really liked being called that way, and especially that he himself did not drink blood. Tomato juice was his life after all.
"D-don't call me a bloodsucker!!" He turned his head to Yuu as he shouted. Because of this, he did not see the enormous marble bust of his great mother Krul standing fabulously on the floor. He tripped on the statue and jumped forward on the floor. His head was spinning as he was mercilessly rolling on the floor. His back hit a wall, and his rolling session was ceased.
"Uuugh..." Mikaela groaned.
Yuu hastily approached the vampire with his fists clenched tight, "Are you okay?" He quickly realized what he had said and shaken his head violently, "I mean!! Y-you bloodsucker! Prepare to meet your doom!"
Mikaela sat up on his arse, rubbing his head as he mumbled out how painful his rolling experience was. Yuu did not like how the young vampire ignored him, so he grabbed on to Mikaela's collar and raised him. They saw each other eye to eye, and as soon as Yuu saw how blue Mikaela's eyes were, his grip loosened.
Heat developed on his cheeks. Yuu had never seen anyone as beautiful as the pale vampire before him. His eyes were mesmerizing that Yuu thought he was being hypnotized. Mikaela felt the same, and he especially felt coy because the other male kept staring.
"P-please stop that... it's embarrassing." Mikaela shyly demanded. Yuu had finally realized he was staring too much at the beauty and looked away with embarrassment, "S-sorry... I couldn't help myself."
"Human... aren't you scared of me?" Mikaela asked.
"No. I... dislike vampires, but I don't fear them," Yuu replied.
"I see..." Sadness appeared on Mikael's chest as he heard the other say those words.
Yuu's brows furrowed, "You're a vampire, right? Why aren't you trying to drink my blood?"
"I don't like drinking blood. Not my thing." Mikaela explained, "All these years, I never drank a single drop of blood. I prefer to have tomato juice, and I love candy."
Yuu narrowed his eyes in suspicion, "What? And you expect me to believe that?"
Mikaela smiled at the black haired boy and crossed his arms, "You don't see me drooling for you, do you?" A splash of pink flushed on Yuu's cheeks, and he pouted, "Che. You damn vampires."
"What? Why do you hate vampires so much? I never did anything to you." Mikaela scoffed.
"Maybe... but your brothers and sisters did." Yuu's eyes darkened as he told the vampire his saddest memories, "My family was killed by vampires, and they laughed as I watched my family die."
Mikaela's eyes shimmered. His chest felt heavy as he heard the boy's story. This kind of behavior had been the reason why Mikaela did not like drinking blood. He loved humans after all, and killing them wasn't in his plans, ever.
He pulled Yuu into a tight hug, "I'm so sorry for what happened. It was unforgivable, and I understand how you feel."
"Wha...?" Yuu felt puzzled by the vampire's action, but at the same time, he felt at ease. It had been so long since someone had tried to comfort him of his troubles, and it had to be a vampire. It seemed that Mikaela was someone Yuu couldn't suspect. With a heavy sigh, Yuu spoke, "Okay... I believe you. You're no bloodsucker."
Mikaela withdrew from the black haired male and tilted his head, "Really? Honestly?"
Yuu nodded, "Yes. But are you really into candy? I've never heard of a vampire who liked sweets." The vampire took Yuu's hand and took him the kitchen, revealing jars filled with gumballs, chocolate bars and many more. There were stacks of candies wrapped in colored paper and cookies and cakes all over the place.
Yuu rubbed his eyes in astonishment. There were just too many sweets in one room!
Then a grin grew on his face. It seemed like he enjoyed the company of Mikaela even though he was a vampire. After all, who wouldn't feel excited when they've just met the one and only vampire who ate lots of sweet instead of sucking blood.
Not so far away from the mansion, Yuu's friends had reached the gate of the mansion. They had been doing their best to catch up with Yuu. The group wondered the mansion's enormous front yard. It was filled with large roses and flowering bushes.
Then the group entered the mansion. Just like how Yuu entered, the door made a loud creaking sound. "Yuu-san? Are you here?" Shinoa called out.
Mikaela and Yuu heard the door opening, and moreover Yuu had heard Shinoa's voice. My friends! Finally, they are here! Yuu thought. His eyes looked at Mikaela, and then a realization came to him. His friends did not know of Mikaela's nature, and they weren't the type to believe in things like that.
They too had a bad history with vampires and want to settle scores.
"The door?" Mikaela wondered. Yuu panicked and said, "It was nothing. I have to go. The village must be looking for me. Please stay here."
It saddened the vampire that his newly found friend had to go, so he pulled the boy's sleeve, "You will leave me alone?"
Yuu gave a sincere smile at Mikaela, wish made the vampire blush despite his lack of blood, "Wait until the clock strikes at three in the afternoon every day. You shall hear your doors creaking open."
Mikaela was speechless at the boy's promise. In fact, he felt butterflies dancing inside his stomach. Mikaela had never encountered someone who wished to meet him every day.
The black haired human waved his hand goodbye, turned his back, and ran off. But just before he faded to the distance, Mikaela shouted, "W-wait, I never got your name! I am Mikaela!"
As Yuu ran, he turned his head and smiled, "Yuu. My name is Hyakuya Yuu!"
And so the boy ran off, and after a while, Mikaela heard his doors closing and the house silent.
Mikaela touched his chest. He could feel it pounding endlessly. Before he could even notice it, the vampire who lived his life alone for years had fallen for a silly human named Yuu.
The next day came, Mikaela had woken up at around eight in the morning. It was a bit too early, Mikaela thought. For the boy named Yuu had promised to visit him at three in the afternoon. Mikaela was restless. He did not know what to do for the next hours.
So he sat on his throne placed in the balcony and watched the village of humans located far beyond. It was always his past time. But today Mikaela was so unsettled, and couldn't stand just sitting there. So he stood up and walked left to right, imagining what would happen if the human came back.
What would he say?
What would they do?
What face would he make when Yuu returned?
All these thoughts were bothering the vampire as he paced back and forth. He was so lost in his thoughts that he had not noticed he had done it for hours. Then his doors had suddenly creaked open, making him fall down on his arse.
Silly, Mikaela thought. But the vampire was thankful no one saw what had happened. Vampires knew how to get embarrassed too. He then stood up and rushed to the front door where Yuu had been entered.
"Mikaela?" Yuu called, looking left and right. It seemed that the boy did not notice the vampire yet. But Mikaela was very excited that he ran to Yuu, and pounced on him. Both of them rolled on the floor, Mikaela clinging onto Yuu close.
Yuu panicked, he thought that Mikaela had lost his mind and wanted to suck his blood. But as they stopped rolling, Mikaela was on top of Yuu with a smile that of an angel. His cheeks were drowned in innocent pink.
"You came back!" Mikaela happily said
Yuu found himself flustered at Mikaela's face. He was no doubt the most beautiful being he had ever laid eyes on. But it wasn't just his beauty that captivated Yuu. It was how Mikaela reacted when he arrived. Yuu was surprised by the joyful face Mikaela put up. Somehow, it made Yuu's heart tingle.
Yuu gave a coy smile, "Yeah. I'm here." Then Yuu looked at a bag which was beside his head. It was a bag that he had brought for Mikaela. "By the way, I have some sweets in there. I thought you might like them."
Mikaela's face brightened, and he instantly hugged Yuu with both his arms and legs, "Yuu-chaaan! You're the best!!"
Yuu awkwardly chuckled at the vampire's reaction, "c-chan??"
After that day, Yuu would come to visit the beautiful Mikaela. Every day when the clocked stopped at three o clock, the mansion doors would creak open, and Yuu would appear bringing a bag full of sweets and candies.
It seemed like all those years of being alone no longer mattered. Mikaela was elated.
But one day, Yuu's friends had found it strange that Yuu would disappear from the village at three o clock without saying a word. They were also worried of the excessive candy Yuu would purchase day to day as they knew Yuu was not that avid of a fan of sweets.
So the group plotted to follow Yuu one day. They hid perfectly so that Yuu would not discover them following his tracks. The skies were gray on that day. It seemed the clouds were carrying a heavy baggage of water.
But Yuu did not stop for he did not want to break his promise. When yuu had reached the vampire's mansion, Mikaela did not respond. Maybe he was busy doing something, Yuu thought. So the boy decided to search around the house for his friend.
Meanwhile, the group had also entered the mansion right after Yuu. But they had made sure they were not found out just yet. Yoichi turned nervous, "Y-yuu comes to the vampire's mansion, every day?"
Shinoa found herself grinning, "Oh my. It looks like Yuu had been trying to plot his revenge all alone without telling us. Should we go right ahead and find the vampire ourselves?"
Mitsuba roughly responded, "As long as we don't lose formation, okay?"
Kimizuki clenched his fist, "That damn Yuu. I will show him I'm better. Let's go find that bloodsucker and hunt him down."
The group went upstairs to the kitchen area. Mikaela was there quietly staring at his fridge in search of tomato juice. He heard footsteps behind him, and he quickly knew it was not Yuu's.
"We've got you, bloodsucker," Mitsuba announced.
Mikaela faced the group in shock, "W-who are you people? Why are you in my house?"
Shinoa took out her knife and pointed it at Mikaela, "We are here to exterminate you!"
The rest of the group took out their weapons, getting ready to strike at the baffled vampire. A sweat rolled down from Mikaela's forehead. He had wondered why these humans had come and why his friend was not there.
If only they knew I did not like blood, Mikaela thought. He knew explaining would not help him in that situation. Humans were always afraid of believing the unknown. So instead, Mikaela ran out of the kitchen to the dining area. The group followed him without hesitation, screaming and shouting at him with dirty words.
It hurt the young vampire, but he expected as much from humans.
They ran and ran until Mikaela took a wrong turn and arrived at his favorite spot of the mansion, the balcony. The group had him cornered.
Mikaela cussed under his breath. Kimizuki smirked at the vampire as he scoffed, "There's no way out now, bloodsucker."
The four youngsters crept close to Mikaela with their weapons at hand. But suddenly, a familiar voice shouted nearby.
"Oi! What do you think you are doing?!"
It was Yuu! The boy pushed through the group and rushed to Mikaela. He was worried for his friend, "Mikaela, are you okay?"
Mikaela gave a small smile and nod. the vampire was terrified.
"What? Why are you being so friendly to him?!" Mitsuba angrily said.
"Yuu-san, don't tell me you've befriended that bloodsucker?" Shinoa asked.
"Don't call him that! His name is Mikaela!" Yuu scowled.
"He has a name??" Yoichi said.
"Che. Don't tell me you've become friends with the one that killed your family?" Kimizuki looked down on Yuu. This made Yuu grit his teeth and clench his fists, "Mikaela did not kill anyone!"
"If you can't kill him, then we will!" Mitsuba shouted at him.
Yuu did not budge. Instead, he spread his arms wide open in front of Mikaela to signify that he wanted to protect him.
"Step aside, Yuu-san!" Shinoa announced.
"NO! You settle down!" Yuu said.
This agitated the group. Yuu's behavior was something they did not want to tolerate. Kimizuki became the most angered for he lost his sister by a curse given by vampires.
He clenched on his weapon tightly, "If you won't step aside, then I will make you!!"
Kimizuki launched himself towards Yuu and Mikaela, while Yuu quickly took out his weapon. Kimizuki thrust his weapon towards Mikaela who was defenseless, but Yuu had other plans.
Without sparing a thought, Yuu hit Kimizuki's weapon with his own. The sounds metal clashing was loud. Kimizuki was thrown back to the group, and Yuu was also thrown back. Since Yuu had been near the edge of the balcony, the impact of their hits had made Yuu fall off the balcony.
Everyone gasped in horror, shouting in unison, "Yuu!!!"
Mikaela's eyes grew wide-eyed at Yuu falling off. He did not hesitate and quickly jumped off the balcony to catch up to Yuu, "Yuu-chan!!!" Tears formed in his eyes as he was terrified of what might happen to his friend.
Yuu was falling fast while Mikaela was still so far away. There was still a huge distance between them.
"Yuu...." Mikaela reached his hands out to Yuu even though they were far, "Yuu-chaaaaaan!!!"
Then Mikaela felt his heart stop when Yuu's body had reached the bottom. All the days that they spent together flashed before his eyes. The day they met, the days they shared candies, the days where Yuu would try drinking tomato juice with him. Everything.
"Yuu-chan..." Mikaela safely landly on the ground without a scratch on his body. But a heavy wound was placed at his heart. He crouched down on the ground and held Yuu's body.
Yuu's eyes were closed and he had blood on his forehead. His chest did not move for he no longer breathed. Tears fell down from Mikaela's eyes as he gazed at his friend, "Yuu... chan..."
He kissed Yuu's forehead where there had been blood as he wept, and bit his own arm. His vampiric blood had flowed down from his skin, and he quickly took it in his mouth. He gazed at his dying friend once more.
I love you, and I will not allow you to die, he thought.
He then pulled Yuu closer to him and erased the distance between them. Their lips touched gently which sent warmth to Mikaela's body. It had been years since he had felt so alive. He gently opened Yuu's mouth and his during their kiss. Blood trickled down from Yuu's mouth.
From that day on, no humans would go to the vampire's mansion. For the cave that once was covered in snow had slowly closed down. The forest which led to it had vanished its path.
No one would bother to search for the vampire who had been lonely all his life. For the stories of him were now changed from bloodsucker to sweet tooth. Mikaela the vampire who lived all alone was one who fell in love with a human named Yuu who had died trying to rescue the boy.
No one really knows if Mikaela was still alive for the group of humans who last saw him had seen Mikaela's heart die out of sorrow.
But if you listen carefully, you might hear the loud sounds of a large door creaking at three in the afternoon.
....
"Mika, can I have some tomato juice?"
A male voice spoke with a smile showing his fangs.
Another one with similar fangs smiled at the request, "Of course you can, Yuu-chan."
