Diane’s POV
“It's time. Let's go,” Kade uttered, standing to his feet and walking towards me with a cold demeanour.
“Time? Time for what?” I asked with a shake of the head, clutching my son tightly as Kade stretched out his hand towards me. “My son stays with me. I'm not giving him away.”
“But I already told you how this is going to go,” he reiterated. “Don't make this any more difficult than it should. Just hand the boy over and we'll be on our way. You already knew that this would happen, didn't you?”
I shook my head again. I wasn't going to let go of my child. Not when I held him in my arms. Not after those words spoken to me by Fiona.
“Then you leave me no choice but to do this,” he sighed, turning to the door. “Guards!”
Three guards walked into the dungeon with mean-looking faces, ready to do whatever was asked of them by their Alpha. From the look in Kade's eyes, I could tell that he wasn't going to change his mind about me.
Me too. I was never going to change my mind about holding onto the baby, even if it was the last thing I'd do. No one was ever going to take him from me. Not while I was alive.
“Take the baby from her and lead her to the tree of Shame,” he ordered the men with a stern voice. “There, she would meet her end; the end that she brought upon herself when she decided to shed innocent blood.”
“I didn't kill your murder!” I barked at him, annoyed that he kept accusing me falsely and was about to kill me for something that I didn't do.
“Don't you think it's a bit too late for that now?” He asked. “Take her.”
The guards came at me and tried to take the baby from me but I wouldn't let go. I leaned into the hand of one of them and gave him the hardest bite I'd ever given anyone and the most enjoyable.
I felt a rush of joy within me as he screamed out in pain, letting go of my hands very quickly. When I finally took my teeth away from his hand, he held onto it with blood oozing freely out of it.
But he couldn't do anything to me. None of them could. They risked having the child fall off my hands so they had to be careful. That was my advantage. I ensured there was no way to take him off my hands without bringing harm to us both.
“Stop.” Kade brought his men to a halt. His face contorted with rage as he took a few steps towards me. “Since you've decided to be stubborn, I'll do this the hard way. Our son will witness the demise of his mother. Hopefully, he wouldn't quite remember it by the time he'd be older but if he does, you must know that you were the reason for his lifelong trauma.”
Turning to the guards, he said, “Let her have the child. Take her to the Tree of Shame. When I kill her, we can easily take the child.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
They bowed and grabbed me roughly, pushing me out of the dungeon like I wasn't their Luna Queen just a few months earlier. They treated me with so much disdain that I wondered if they had always felt that way about me.
As they led me out to the open, I was met with an angry group of people, screaming for me to be executed.
“Murderer! Kill her!” They yelled, following me behind as the guards continued pushing me until we finally got to the Tree of Shame.
“Hold,” Kade commanded the guards as we got to the tree, and for the first time, I beheld the gigantic tree of Shame that has been so talked about ever since I was little.
It was just as big as I heard it was and had no fruits on it. It was said to be the oldest tree in the Pack and the only one to have never borne fruits.
That is why it was regarded as a cursed tree, used for the execution of people who had committed the most heinous crimes. I'd never loved the sight of people dying. It was the reason why I refused to step foot there since I was little. But finally, I found myself there not as a spectator but as the convicted.
The Pack members continued raining curses and abuses at me as Kade approached me with Josh, his Beta by his side. Fiona was present too. She couldn't hide the happiness she felt as her face beamed with smiles.
“It's time to meet your end, Diane but I have to tell you something first,” he voiced, almost in a whisper. “I loved you with all of my heart, Diane. I was willing to move mountains for your sake. Such was how much you meant to me. You were my everything. I never thought that you'd do that to my mother. I didn't know you had it in you. No matter what it was that she did to you, you could have easily told me. You know that I'd always take your side over anyone, even my mother.”
“But I didn't kill her. We never had any form of disagreement,” I countered, pleading my innocence one last time. “I would never do that to anyone, Kade. I swear on my life.”
“But you don't have a life to swear on anymore because I'm about to take it from you,” he coldly remarked. “If only you didn't choose to take her life, we could have still been together. We could have conquered the world with our triplets. So much we could have achieved together but you chose to ruin it. I cannot forgive you for that. My mother would spit on me from the grave if I did. I'm sorry but this has to happen. Tie her up!”
“Maybe she's already spitting on you from her grave for not believing a woman whom you claim to love,” I voiced as the guards struggled to hold me together. “Maybe she's doing that already for choosing to marry the twin of the person you claim took her life. You're about to make the greatest mistake of your life and I swear, you'll regret it.”
“We'll see about that.”
The guards tried once again to take my child so they could tie me properly but I held onto him tightly. “We'll have no choice but to hit you,” one of the guards warned but I remained firm.
Just as I was about to tell him off, I felt a hand quickly reach toward me, snatching my son from me and I screamed in pain, trying in vain to break free from the hold the guards had on me.
It was Josh. Kade’s beta. As soon as he grabbed the boy, he took out a knife from his pocket and put it on his throat.
“Please, don't do this. Give me my child back,” I begged with tears in my eyes as the guards tied me to the tree. “Don't do this Josh. You're better than this.”
I pleaded as much as I could but he didn't even flinch. He stood there and watched on as the people cheered loudly, throwing things at me as they desired whilst Kade watched his Beta with shock in his.
“What's going on?” Kade asked, spreading his arms in surprise. “Let me have the child.”
“No. I'll kill this baby if you don't let Diane go.”
Gasps filled the air as the people turned their attention to Josh. Me too. I couldn't believe my ears.
How was he asking for something like that? Did he not know he was putting his life in danger?
At that point, I didn't care. I was open to anything that would help save my life and that of my child. Since I couldn't get my hands on the other two, I was desperate to get away with the one I had.
“This is a betrayal of the highest order, Josh. How could you do this to me!”Kade bellowed. “You know what she did. You know that she killed my mother. Why are you trying to deny her the peace she deserves?”
“No. She didn't,” Josh shook his head. “I can't believe that you could be this heartless to accuse her of doing such. How could you be willing to kill an innocent woman whom you claim to love? Where then is the love If you cannot believe her? Diane is innocent and I know it.”
Suddenly, Kade burst into laughter. “I knew it. I've always had a hunch that you've been f*****g her behind my back,” he accused once again. “I see the way you both look at each other. How sure am I that these kids don't belong to you both? I mean, they don't even look like me.”
I watched in anger as he made horrendous comments about me. Yes, the kids didn't look so much like him but that was because they all took after their mother. How could he dare accuse me of being unfaithful when it was he who slept around with my sister?
After about a minute of Josh not budging, he asked his guards to stand down and Josh cautiously loosened the ropes around me, making sure that no one came any closer to us.
When he was done, he led me to his car with a knife still held to my child’s neck and we both got inside.
“I hereby banish you both from this Pack!” Kade growled in anger at the both of us. “If we ever see any of you in this Pack, you'll be met with nothing else but death.”
Josh nodded and drove off quickly while I buried my face in my hands and cried.
