Delilah's thoughts were still clouded by her recent run-in with Cooper. His presence and words tore at her, making it impossible for her to forget. Unable to get over the mental ruins he had left her in, she could feel herself sinking into that well-known realm of rage and sorrow. She required a diversion. Even if it was only for a short while, she needed a way out.
Around her, the gallery's sounds swirled, voices blending with the subdued jazz music. Delilah made an effort to put her guests first, to be present, to block out Cooper's thoughts. However, nothing appeared to be effective. That is, until everyone stopped talking when the gallery door opened again.
A man entered, his presence a commanding presence. Xavier Montgomery was everything Cooper was not. He was tall, had black, disheveled hair, and had a strong jawline that looked like it was chiseled out of marble. charismatic. strong. And completely captivating for ways Delilah was unable to yet understand. His eyes met hers instantly, and Delilah's heart skipped a beat for the first time that night. He approached her wearing a well-tailored suit that suited him flawlessly and gave off an air of elegance and money. He walked with assurance and a little smile on his lips.
As he got closer, Delilah automatically straightened her back. "Your artwork is amazing," Xavier remarked in a silky, somewhat mesmerizing voice. "With each stroke, it seems like a piece of your soul is being revealed."
His words soothed her wounded soul like a salve. She had forgotten, in part, what it was like to be recognized for her contributions, to be valued for more than the tragedy of her past. She could sense the respect in his eyes and the sincerity of his remarks, not only as a businessman but also as someone who truly valued beauty.
The intensity of his presence astonished Delilah, who was taken aback. Over the years, she had encountered many powerful men, but none had had the same impact on her. Even if she made an effort to ignore it, she could feel the energy between them, an odd pull that was irresistible.
Xavier smiled broadly and nodded slightly to her. "Delilah, I believe we could accomplish great things together."
She was filled with hope after hearing his comments, and she couldn't help but wonder if this was the new beginning she had been waiting for. The chance to start something from scratch, far from the specters of her history?
As he leaned in a little and lowered his voice just enough for her to feel the impact of his next words, Xavier's eyes softened. "I would love to present you with an opportunity that has the potential to completely transform your life."
Delilah couldn't get rid of the impression that this was something far more personal, even as the topic of conversation turned to business. In addition to a commercial agreement, Xavier was giving her the opportunity to get away from the burdensome emotional baggage she was carrying around. For a second, Delilah nearly thought that things may change because of the calm surety with which he spoke.
"Delilah, you've created something remarkable here," Xavier added in a low, resolute voice. "But this is only the beginning," he said, pointing to her gallery. I'm referring to elevating your art to a new level and finding investors who will value it and be willing to pay top price for it.
As she listened, her heart pounded, caught between curiosity and cynicism. Trusting someone, especially a male, felt risky to her because she had been burnt too many times to count. She had been protected by her walls, which had been constructed for a purpose. However, she felt seen in a way she hadn't felt in years as Xavier talked and his words began to seep into her mind.
With eyes that probed deeper than she felt comfortable, Xavier added, "I know what you've been through." "I'm not here to cause you harm." I wish to assist you in relocating to your place. Delilah, you deserve that.
Delilah felt vulnerable for a second. As Xavier's eyes met hers, the burden of her past, the betrayal, the heartbreak, seemed to ascend to the surface. He seemed to be able to see right through her façade to the bare vulnerability underneath. Nevertheless, his presence was consoling. His peacefulness calmed the restless churning inside her, and there was something comforting about him.
She was about to reply, however, when a voice from behind her cut through the quiet, and she turned to see Cooper standing there, observing the two of them. His eyes were narrowed and his mouth was tight. Delilah felt a knot in her stomach. She hadn't even noticed Cooper's approach because she had been preoccupied with Xavier's offer.
Cooper caught Xavier's eye, and the two men shared a drawn-out, strained glance. When Delilah saw that Cooper was observing her, not with rage, but with a desperation she had never seen in him before, her breath caught in her throat.
Delilah went back to Xavier swiftly, feeling a growing sense of urgency. She needed to decide. Could she put her trust in this man? Would she be able to trust herself to jump into the unknown?
Xavier grinned once more, his eyes assured. "Consider it, Delilah. This is your opportunity to change the course of your life.
Torn between her history and her possible future, Delilah swallowed hard. Her voice was hardly audible above a whisper as she responded, "I'll give it some thought."
Delilah glanced briefly at Cooper as Xavier turned to go. His passionate, unsaid feelings were burning in his eyes as they stared at her. He was obviously having trouble comprehending what he had just seen. His body was rigid, his hands balled into fists, as if he was struggling to maintain his cool. He had been standing at the room's edge, but now he was taking deliberate moves to go closer to them.
Delilah turned away, forcing herself to concentrate on Xavier, who had already begun talking to a few other guests, as her heart began to race. Like a gentle touch she wasn't quite aware she needed, the warmth of his attention lingered on her skin. She felt a sense of potential and value from Xavier that Cooper had not experienced in years. However, the moment was short. The storm that was building behind her was too much for her to ignore.
She was ready to disappear into the crowd when Cooper, speaking in a low, icy voice, came to her side. "You've already moved on, then?"
Delilah tensed. Her heart ached because she could hear the rawness in his voice, a mix of regret and rage. However, she refused to allow him to dictate the story of her life any longer.
"You don't get to do this, Cooper," she stated firmly. No more. You had an opportunity.
Cooper wasn't done, though. His face was a mask of frustration as he took a step closer. "You don't understand," he murmured, his voice lower now. I was afraid of losing you.
Unanswered, the words lingered in the air. However, Delilah realized in her heart that there was no point in making any more excuses.
Her attention shifted to Xavier, who was observing from a distance with a fierce and expectant gaze. Delilah was aware of her obligation. Would she risk it, though?
What would come next? Could she really make a fresh start? Or was she stuck in the past forever?
