The edge of the forest

924 Words
The moon rose slowly that night, soft and pale, casting its silver light across rooftops and quiet paths. Lila felt it the moment it appeared. A subtle tightening in her chest. A gentle tingling in her eyes, faint at first, then brighter as the moon climbed higher. Her eyes only changed under moonlight. Never during the day. Never in shadows. Only when the night opened itself over the world. She stood near her window, breathing in the cool air that drifted into her room. The glow fluttered in her reflection, almost shy, as though it feared being fully seen. She pressed a hand to her chest, trying to understand the strange pull she felt every night since the forest incident. Her senses sharpened again. The distant sound of a door closing. The whisper of leaves. A soft rustle too steady to be the wind. Everything came to her with an alarming clarity that both frightened and fascinated her. The village sensed it too. Not her changes, but the night itself. People moved quickly at dusk now, gathering their children, locking their doors, glancing toward the forest with a shared fear. The whispers about her collapse had spread, and though no one confronted her directly, she felt the uneasiness everywhere she went. Lila wrapped a shawl around her shoulders and stepped out onto the quiet path behind her home. She needed a moment alone. She needed air. She needed to think. The moonlight followed her, brushing her skin with its cool touch. Her eyes shimmered again, brighter this time, and she exhaled slowly as the sensation washed over her. She stopped by the old wooden bridge near the stream. Moonlight danced on the water, making the surface shimmer like glass. She leaned on the railing, letting the night settle around her. Something shifted behind her. A silence that did not belong to the natural world. A presence she felt before she heard anything. She turned her head slightly A man stood at the forest edge, half hidden in the shadows but unmistakable in the moonlight. His posture was calm, steady, as if he had been waiting for her. The light touched his face softly, outlining his sharp features and the strange intensity in his eyes. He was always there when the moon rose. Quiet. Watchful. Not approaching, but not leaving either. As though he was pulled toward her the same way she was pulled toward the forest. “You should be indoors,” he said, his voice low but warm. She was stunned that she could hear him from that distance. “Your voice is so familiar, like I have heard it so many times. Who are you,” Lila replied, turning fully toward him. His gaze drifted to her eyes, and for a moment he seemed caught by the soft glow pulsing there. Something unreadable flickered across his expression. “I am your guardian”, he said. “Guardian for what” she muttered, not knowing when it left mouth “The moon changes you,” he said quietly. “More every night.” “What does it want from me?” she whispered. Before he could answer, the air around them shifted. Not wind. Not sound. Something older. Lila felt it settle over her skin like cold breath. She straightened, her heart tightening. The Guardian stepped forward, placing himself slightly in front of her. “They are here,” he murmured. Lila’s breath caught. “Who is here?” He did not answer with words. Instead, his eyes sharpened and moved toward the dark line of trees. She followed his gaze. Three tall figures stood at the forest boundary. Silent. Motionless. Cloaked in something too pale to be shadow but too dim to be mist. They had no visible faces, yet Lila felt their attention fall directly on her the instant she saw them. Her eyes glowed stronger, reacting to them. A soft pulse. Then stronger. She felt a pull inside her, a recognition she could not explain. The Guardian tensed. “Stay behind me.” The figures lifted their heads slightly, and the air thickened until Lila could barely draw a breath. They did not speak, yet she felt their call deep within her bones. Her pulse quickened. Her eyes brightened even more, glowing with an intensity she could not control. The Guardian stepped forward. “You will not touch her.” The figures paused. The moonlight rippled faintly as if answering their presence. The glow in Lila’s eyes grew stronger, trembling with light that felt too powerful for her body to hold. One figure raised a single hand, gentle yet commanding. Lila gasped as something inside her responded. The Guardian moved at once. “That is enough.” A soft wave of mist curled around the figures, wrapping them like drifting smoke. Slowly, they stepped back into the forest, fading with every step, melting into the moonlit shadows until they disappeared completely. Silence returned. Lila realized she was trembling. She gripped the railing, trying to steady her breath. The Guardian turned to her, and in his eyes she saw something she had not seen before. Fear. “What were they?” she whispered. He shook his head slowly. “They are drawn to the moon touched. And you glow brighter than any I have seen.” She swallowed hard, unable to look away from him. “What does that mean?” The Guardian stepped closer, his voice barely above a whisper. “It means you are not hidden anymore.”
