9- The Custody Threat

1123 Words
Parker surged toward him before she could stop herself, every nerve in her body screaming. “You do not get to walk into my home, drop a nuclear bomb on my life, and threaten to take my son.” Maxton’s eyes darkened instantly. “Our son.” “Don’t.” Her finger slammed against his chest. “Do not correct me while you’re standing here talking about dragging Luca into court.” “I’m not trying to take him from you.” “You literally said custody!” “Because legally—” “Don’t lawyer me, Maxton.” Her voice rose. Years of fear and exhaustion ripping free all at once. “I have spent six years protecting him. Six years making sure he had stability, safety, consistency—” “And I lost six years because of it!” Silence crashed between them. Heavy. Brutal. The force of his voice stunned even her. Maxton dragged a hand through his hair, breathing hard now. For the first time since arriving, the control he wore like armor had cracked. “I missed everything,” he said hoarsely. “His first steps. His first words. Birthdays. Christmases. Six years of my son’s life gone, Parker.” Pain flashed across his face so fast it was almost unbearable. “He sat across from me today wishing he had a father.” That one landed like a blade. Parker physically recoiled. Because she had heard it too. Watched Luca say it. Watched the devastation hit Maxton in real time. But fear still won. It always did. “You think filing papers fixes that?” she demanded. “You think throwing us into some legal war magically makes you a father?” “No.” His voice dropped dangerously low. “But it makes sure I’m never shut out again.” The words rang through the kitchen. Cold. Certain. Terrifying. Parker folded her arms tightly across herself, as if she could physically hold herself together. “You don’t get to bulldoze into his life because DNA says you can.” “And you don’t get to decide I’m irrelevant because you’re scared.” Her eyes flashed. “I am not scared.” Maxton stepped closer. Close enough that she could feel the heat radiating off him. Close enough that old memories threatened to suffocate her. “You’re terrified.” The quiet certainty in his voice shattered her composure more than shouting ever could. “Terrified that if Luca loves me, you’ll lose control.” “That’s not fair.” “No?” His jaw tightened. “Then tell me what is.” Parker opened her mouth. Nothing came out. Because the truth was ugly. Complicated. Impossible to explain cleanly. She had spent six years building walls around Luca. Around herself. And now Maxton stood in the middle of both, tearing through them with bare hands. “I was eighteen,” she whispered finally. “Pregnant. Alone. Every article about your family made them sound untouchable and dangerous, and all I could think was that if anyone found out about Luca, he’d become leverage.” Maxton went still. Not cold. Not angry. Still. “And you thought I’d allow that?” “No.” Her answer came instantly. Because despite everything— despite the hurt, the anger, the years— that had never been her fear. She swallowed hard. “I thought your enemies would.” Something shifted in his expression then. Something quieter. More devastating. Because for the first time, he truly understood. Not just what she had done— but why. Parker’s voice trembled now. “I built a life where he could just be a little boy. A normal little boy.” “And you did a good job.” The words stunned her. She looked up sharply. Maxton held her gaze. “I mean that.” No sarcasm. No manipulation. Just truth. “He’s smart. Funny. Safe. Loved.” His throat worked once before he continued. “You gave him all of that.” Emotion climbed painfully into her chest. Because she had prepared herself for rage. For blame. Not this. “But I’m still his father,” Maxton said quietly. “And I can’t pretend I’m okay standing on the outside of his life.” Parker looked away first. Because that hurt too much. When she finally spoke, her voice was smaller. “So what? We just… play family now?” “No.” His answer came immediately. Firm. Certain. “We figure it out.” She laughed weakly. “You make that sound easy.” “It won’t be.” A beat. “But I’m not walking away.” The conviction in his voice shook something deep inside her. Because Maxton Sutton never said things lightly. If he claimed something— he meant it. And now he was claiming Luca. Claiming fatherhood. Claiming a place beside them both. Parker’s chest tightened painfully. “Even if I believed you,” she whispered, “you don’t get to force your way in.” His expression hardened slightly. “Then stop forcing me to fight for scraps.” The words hit too hard. Too honest. Too real. Before she could answer— three sharp knocks split the air. Both of them froze. Parker frowned immediately. “It’s after ten.” Another knock. More insistent this time. A cold feeling slid down her spine. She moved toward the door slowly, every instinct suddenly screaming. When she opened it, a man in a gray suit stood on the other side holding a thick folder. Professional. Detached. Deadly. Her stomach dropped instantly. Because she knew exactly what that look meant. “Ms. Taylor?” Her pulse thundered. “You’ve been served.” The world tilted beneath her feet. Maxton straightened behind her. “What?” Parker took the envelope numbly. Her fingers shook as she opened it. Pages slid free. Legal documents. Court filings. Emergency petition. Her vision blurred for half a second before the petitioner’s name registered. Then— she laughed. A sharp, disbelieving sound that held absolutely no humor. Because somehow— somehow— this situation had just become catastrophic. Maxton’s expression darkened. “What is it?” Parker slowly lifted her eyes to his. And for the first time that night— she looked afraid. Truly afraid. “They filed before you.” His entire body went rigid. “Who?” Parker swallowed hard. Then read the name printed across the top page. “Richard and Evelyn Sutton.” Silence. Dead silence. Maxton’s face drained of color. Because those weren’t just names. They were power. Influence. Ruthlessness. His parents. And suddenly this wasn’t just about a father fighting for his son anymore. It was war.
