Chapter 5:The Choice

Chapter 5: The Choice Rain fell hard that night the kind that drowns the city in silver and silence. All you could hear was hail. Liyanah stood by her apartment window, watching the drops chase each other down the window glass. She hadn’t heard from Dante since his message two nights ago.She could not stop thinking about the message. But she felt him in the way her heart would beat too fast when a car slowed outside, in the way shadows moved differently around her.She always thought it was him. Ricardo had texted too, asking to see her. She hadn’t replied to his messages. She didn’t trust herself anymore not around Dante or Ricardo . Then, just past midnight, a knock echoed through the apartment. She froze.Another knock. Slow. Deliberate. But loud and hard. Liyanah opened the door and there he was. Dante. With hair all wet, water dripping down his shirt, ans his lashes wet. He looked exhausted, like he hadn’t slept in days. But his eyes ,those dark, fire eyes still had that same dangerous look. “Can I come in?” he asked quietly. She hesitated at first but then stepped aside to allow him to walk in.He entered without a word, water dripping from his coat onto the floor. “You shouldn’t be here,” she said. “I know,” he replied. “But I couldn’t stay away from you any longer.” She crossed her arms. “You can’t just appear when it suits you, Dante. I have a life to.” His mouth twitched not quite a smile. “You had one before I walked into your hospital. Not after.” “Don’t flatter yourself Dante.” “I’m not.” He met her gaze. “I’m warning you.” Her heart twisted. “Then warn me properly.” He took a step closer. “They know who you are now, Liyanah. The people who came that night. They think you matter to me and they after you.” “Do I matter to you?” “Yes,” he said without hesitation. “you are special to me.” Silence fell between them. The rain hammered against the windows, the sound of a heartbeat they both felt. But none of them uttered another word. “Then what happens now?” she whispered. “You leave the city. Tonight.” “I’m not running away from anything.” He exhaled. “You don’t understand how this world works Liyanah.” “I understand enough,” she snapped. “I understand that you make choices and live with them. And I understand that you came here because you wanted me to be safe, not because you think I’m weak. I do understand but I dont run.” He stared at her that same fire in her eyes reflected in his at this moment. “God, you drive me insane,” he murmured. “You’re not afraid of anything, are you?” “Only losing myself,” she said softly. Something in him broke then. He reached out, holding her face like she was something fragile though they both knew she wasn’t. “I don’t deserve you doc.I don’t deserve you." She met his gaze. “You’re right. You don’t.” And then she kissed him. It wasn’t gentle. It was the kind of kiss that happens when the world’s already burning , desperate and hungry. His hands in her hair; hers gripped his shirt, pulling him closer until there was no space left between fear and desire and them. When they finally broke apart, her breath was trembling. “So what now, Dante?” “Now?” He smiled faintly. “Now I make sure no one ever touches you again.I promise you that.” Before she could speak, another knock cut through the moment they shared. Louder this time.Almost violent. Dante’s body went still. “Stay here.” He moved towards the door like a shadow, gun drawn from beneath his black coat. Liyanah’s chest tightened. She was scared this time. The door opened and Ricardo stood there, soaked, wild-eyed, breathing heavily. “Dante,” he said, voice low. “They’re coming. They're coming.” Dante’s jaw dropped. “Who? Who is coming Ricardo?” “The Valentis. They found out about Liyanah.” Ricardo’s looked at Liyanah, and his expression softened. “You have to go. Both of you now.” Dante stepped forward. “No. I’ll handle it.” Ricardo shook his head. “You won’t make it ten minutes. They’ve got the docks surrounded as we speak.” Liyanah’s pulse raced. “What’s happening? Can someone explain?” “War,” Dante said flatly. “And you’re the reason it started.” Her breath caught. “Me?” “They think taking you from me is punishment,” Dante said quietly. “They’re wrong.” Ricardo ran a hand through his wet hair. “We can still get her out through the south road. I’ve got a car waiting downstairs.” “I’m not leaving without you,” Liyanah said. Dante turned to her, eyes fierce. “You have to .You have no choice.” “No,” she said. “You walked into my world and burned it down, Dante. If I run now, that means I was never really brave at all ,and i told you i don't run away from anything.” Ricardo stared at her admiration flickering in his eyes. “You really are fearless Liyanah.” “Don’t,” Dante warned, his tone sharp. Ricardo’s jaw tightened. “I’m not trying to take her from you ,I'm just saying she is fearless.” “You already are,” Dante said. “You always do.” The air crackled with old wounds. Liyanah could see it now the ghosts between them, the love twisted into rivalry. Ricardo looked at his brother, then at her, and for the first time, he was out of words. “I didn’t mean to fall in love with her,” he said quietly. “But I did.”he said while putting his head down. Liyanah froze. “Ricardo—” He smiled sadly. “Don’t worry, Doctor. I’m not the one she dreams about at night.” Dante’s expression softened with something like regret. “You shouldn’t have come here.” “Someone had to make sure she lives,” Ricardo said, and turned towards the door. “I’ll sent them away. Get her out now .” “Ricardo—” Dante said, but his brother was already gone. The silence that followed was unbearable.Dante’s hand started shaking the first sign of fear she’d ever seen in him. “Come on,” he said. “We’re leaving now.” “But my belongings and What about Ricardo?”she said in a worried tone. “Leave everything I will get you new things”.he said softly. They ran into the rain. The city lights blurred like ghosts through the downpour. Somewhere in the distance, the sound of a gunshot was heard. Dante pulled her into an alley, pressing her against the wall as cars slowly drove past. “Stay with me,” he whispered. “I’m not going anywhere.” When the gunfire faded, they moved again slipping through backstreets until they reached the docks. The air smelled of salt and smoke. A single car waited there for them. Dante opened the door for her. “Get in quick.” “What about Ricardo?”she said with tears in her eyes. He looked away. “He’ll find us don't worry.” But even as he said it, they both knew that he was lying. She climbed in. He started the engine. As they drove through the sleeping city, the first light of dawn crept over the rooftops fragile and uncertain. Liyanah turned to him. “What happens now Dante?” He didn’t answer right away. Then he said quietly, “Now we disappear. Just for a while to be safe.” “Together?” “If you’ll have me.” She smiled — small, tired, but real and happy. “You already know the answer to that.” He looked at her then, eyes soft in a way she’d never seen before. “You were never afraid of me, were you?” “No,” she said. “I was afraid of what you’d make me feel for you.” He reached for her hand. “Then I guess we’re both lost in each other.” Outside, the rain slowed to a whisper. Inside, the silence between them was no longer fear it was understanding and love. She had saved lives all her life. But in saving him, Liyanah had found her own. Epilogue Two months later, on the outskirts of Verona, a small clinic opened quiet, clean, with no name on the door. Inside, Dr. Liyanah Khan treated those no one else would.Dante opened the clinic for her . Sometimes, late at night, a black car would pull up outside. A man would step out, scar glinting faintly in the moonlight. He never stayed long just long enough to remind her that darkness can love light too. And once in a while, she’d light a candle in the window for Ricardo, who never came back.Just to feel his presence as he was filled with light and kindness in his heart.
