Chapter Seventeen Mark’s phone was ringing. He didn’t know when he’d finally fallen asleep, but now he jerked awake, and his hand went to the phone as he blinked in the early morning light. He pressed the green answer icon. “Yeah, what?” was all he could get out, his throat groggy. His hand went to his forehead as he lay there and shut his eyes again. “Detective Friessen, this is Mary Jane Trundell with the town council.” Mark was sitting up now, blinking. The dog was at the foot of the bed, his head on Mark’s foot. He slid out from under the covers and sat up, his feet on the cool hardwood floor.
