Dave held the pipe before him for a moment, then with one accord brother and sister stepped out of the cabin door into the open. Something had changed the very aspect of the day. The sun shone fully as gloriously as when they had entered the cabin. The breeze, caressing ferns and trees, still gathered fragrance and whispered gently on its way. But in the minds of the two explorers each clump of bushes, each tree trunk, was hiding place for the man of mystery. Every second they expected to hear his hideous laugh ring along the ridge, to see his form slink along the trail. Dave held the rifle in the hollow of his arm.
