26 The Downside Let me be clear: this is a great job! I don’t have to wear heavy workwear. I don’t get exposed to as many nasty people. I don’t go out in the rain, and I don’t have garbage poured on me or come back with mysterious pokes and gashes in my skin. It is all civilized, and, for the most part, like all work, it is pretty boring. What I didn’t know about a clinic is, because they are heavily automated (everything runs on a schedule) there is no moving the schedule up or down. It didn’t take me long to understand why it was I hadn’t been allowed to go home until the end of the day. From a purely administrative point of view, it’s easier to marshal all the discharges for the same time and do them all as a batch.
