Liam found his brother in his office, looking like a picture of misery.
His head was thrown back over the chair, a tumbler of whiskey in his hand. Tears streamed silently down his face.
“How is she?” he asked Nick.
Liam sighed. She wasn't improving, but all he said was, “She's fine.”
Over the few days, Skylar had shown an affinity to Liam, for some reason they couldn't yet fathom. Nick on the other hand elicited violent reactions from her, going into wild spasms anytime he was near. He eventually stopped going to her room and spent most of his time in the office.
“She'll be fine, big brother.”
“I don't know, Liam. I'm scared for her. And me, too.” he ended in a hoarse whisper.
He sighed shakily. Had he known she would mean this much to him? No. He hadn't expected this. He had expected tolerance, friendship at the most, but not this yearning, this longing. This tugging in his heart.
He hadn't been big on females before her. He'd written off getting a mate so he'd mostly kept to himself, occasionally soliciting the services of high-end escorts.
Avalon had been a lapse. And now she was his biggest mistake.
Relinquishing his tumbler, he stood up. Liam watched him go.

“I can torture you to the verge of death, Skylar, but just barely, so you're hanging between the crossroads of the two worlds. Or I could kill you, bring you back, and kill you again. Or would you like to battle demons, seen only by you? Pick one.”
She woke up screaming as a blinding white light struck her.
He truly was after her.
The door opened and her family rushed in.
She continued screaming, but when she sighted Nick, she bared her teeth, growled, and launched at her.
She seemed to have gained extraordinary strength. It took the rest of them to pull her off him. She tore herself away from them and landed on the soles of her feet and her palms. She growled again. This time, her wolf teeth came to the forefront.
“Oh-oh,” said Liam.
They watched as she morphed into her wolf. Eyes still red and teeth still bared, she threw herself at them.
Nick caught her easily.
She gave a sad, longing howl. Shocked, he relaxed his grip on her and she bounded away from him and dashed out the door.
