With one stroke of his weapon, Liam severed the Tokoloshe's head. It dropped with a dull, muffled thud.
“Its master won't miss it,” he proclaimed to Nick.
“A note, Liam.”
Liam turned to his brother. “Where did it come from?”
Nick had watched the black hawk circling overhead for minutes before dropping the rolled paper in its beak. Immediately Nick picked it up, the hawk had evaporated into ashes.
His hand almost shook as he unrolled the paper. He read silently, his brother beside him.
How has it been without your mate so far, Alpha? How about the new surprise? How do you feel about it? Do you want to remember her or do you want her to remember YOU? Choose, choose, and choose wisely. The clock is ticking.
“What does this mean? What surprise?” asked a perplexed Liam, looking baffled.
“No one remembers her.” came Sapphire's voice as she entered the room with her Mom.
Nick turned to face her. “What? What do you mean?”
“Mom's friend, Chelsea, reached out to Mom earlier today and asked why she wasn't home. Mom was surprised because she already told Chelsea of Sky's disappearance. She repeated it to her again and Chelsea kept asking who Skylar was. We thought it was something that had to do with Chelsea herself but I decided to give a few of our friends a call and casually told them Skylar sends her greeting,” Sapphire's voice broke and she swallowed. “They all asked who she was.”
The tears shone in her eyes and Liam moved towards her. He wrapped an arm around her and kissed her hair. She clung to him desperately.
“So it's either everyone forgets her or she forgets us,” Nick said, his voice surprisingly steady. He opened the letter and read the last part again. The clock is ticking.
“A black hawk delivered the letter, you said, Nick?” Liam asked.
Nick nodded.
“Witches.” their mother said
“And not the ones we know, either,” Nick added. “Dark witches. That means there're high priestesses involved. They will have their Gathering Day tomorrow. The letter is an invitation. We'll pay them a visit.”
