By late afternoon, the golden intimacy of the morning had yielded to a cool, quiet reality.
Elliot stood in front of the small bathroom mirror, carefully adjusting his collar to hide the compression tape along his neck. His reflection was slightly pale, but his posture was upright, his bright blue eyes sharp and calculating once more.
The morning had gone better than planned. The physical surrender had anchored her to him far faster than weeks of delicate dinners ever could. Now, it was time to lock the cage.
He stepped out into the living room. Lilly was sitting at her small wooden kitchen table, a steaming mug of black tea between her hands. She wore an oversized cream sweater, her dark hair pulled back loosely, looking fragile and quiet.
"How is your head?" she asked softly, offering a faint, timid smile as she looked up.
"Much better," Elliot said smoothly, stepping over to stand beside her chair. He reached down, trailing his fingers over her cheek with an air of warm, casual possessiveness. "Though I should head back to my place for a bit. Handle a few urgent work calls, clean up properly."
"Of course," Lilly murmured, leaning slightly into his hand before pulling back. "I don't want to hold you up."
"You're not holding me up, pretty girl," Elliot replied, his voice dropping into a low, protective register. He pulled out the chair opposite her and leaned in across the table. "In fact... after what happened last night, I don't like the idea of you staying here alone. This building's front lock is flimsy, and the street out front is poorly lit."
Lilly blinked, her dark eyes widening with a touch of uncertainty. "Elliot, I’ve lived here for two years"
"And last night?" Elliot interrupted gently, taking both of her hands in his. "I want you to bring a bag over to my place this evening. Stay with me for a few days and see how you feel about it? brownstone has biometric security and private gate access. You’ll be completely safe."
Isolation framed as chivalry. It was his classic playbook. Move the target out of their comfort zone, place them in his territory, and control every variable.
Lilly held his gaze, letting a hesitant, flattered blush creep up her neck. She looked down at their joined hands, biting her lip before giving a slow, soft nod.
"Okay," she whispered, looking back up with total vulnerability. "If... if you're sure I won't be in the way."
"You could never be in the way with a face like that," Elliot smiled, satisfied.
"I'll have a car pick you up at eight," Elliot said, leaning down to press a warm, lingering kiss to her lips. "See you tonight, beautiful ."
"Be careful!" she called out softly as he opened the door and stepped into the hallway.
The moment the heavy deadbolt clicked into place, the atmosphere in the apartment shifted violently.
Lily didn't move for three long seconds. Then, her shoulders uncurled from their timid posture. The soft, wide-eyed warmth drained instantly from her face, leaving behind an expression as cold and flat as polished stone.
She stood up, walking briskly to her small bathroom. Closing the door, she pulled up her sweater. Across her lower ribs, a dark, angry purple bruise was already rapidly yellowing, the physical backlash of the rapid skeletal shift she had forced in the dark alley.
Her jaw tightened as she pressed a thumb against the sore muscle. Shifting back and forth so quickly took a heavy physical toll; her metabolism was burning through blood sugar at three times the normal rate. She reached into the medicine cabinet, pulled out a concentrated glucose vial, and downed it in one sharp gulp.
Returning to the kitchen, she pulled a small burner phone from beneath a loose floorboard near the sink. She pressed a single speed-dial button.
"Report," a flat, synthetic voice answered on the third ring.
"Target is fully engaged," Lilly said, her voice dropping into an accent-less, razor-sharp tone completely devoid of the timid bookworm Elliot knew. "He’s invited me into his home. I’ll have physical access by midnight."
"And the incident at the market?" the voice asked. "Our surveillance indicated an altercation."
Lilly’s eyes narrowed slightly as she recalled the thrill of snapping the thug's wrist in the dark. "Controlled. Elliot took a hit, which played directly into my cover. But he's arrogant, he might try to confirm my recount of the event ."
If he pulls the city traffic feeds, your shift window will show on the thermal sweep."
"I'm already handling it," Lily replied coldly.
She ended the call.
Elliot Goodman thought he was playing the wolf leading a lamb to slaughter. He had no idea that the moment she crossed his threshold, she was bringing the fire right to his front door.
